With a 42km coastline this is big news ;)

Triglav, as it is her name, is a new patrol boat of the slovenian navy. Built by the russians for payment of the kliring debt. She will be used primarily as a patrol ship and is equiped for search and rescue, enviromental cleanup and off-shore fires :06: (thats what it says). She was criscened after our highest mountain and national symbol by the dean of my faculty herself. She is also the first russian made ship to serve in a NATO member navy.

some technical data:
lenght: 49m
width: 9,2m
draft: 2,2m
displacement: 375 000 kg
top speed: 27 knots
power plant: 3 MTU engines, each with 2880 kW power, 3 screws plus a bow-thruster

armament:
AK-306, 6-barrel, 30mm automatic cannon
2x 14,5mm machineguns
sturm ship to ship missile system
igla (needle) anti aircraft missile system
PK-10 anti missile decoys

crew:
4 officers and 20 sailors and pettyofficers

It's currently stil in russia, for training and shakedown and she will be officially handed to us by the end of october.

kilning debth would be repayed to slovenia with cold cash, enough free natural gas for a couple of years or a navy ship... and we chose the ship :-?and good thing that she has bowthruster or else we would have to sail to croatia to turn her arround :DL

She seems more like a somewhat up-armed coast guard cutter - but a good compact and economic one. Not something to fight on blue water with, but not a white elephant by any means. Great balance for a small navy I think

we dont have a coast guard like the US so she probibly is a coast guard cutter in all but name and color.
A lot of critisism fell on this ship. economic stuff and all, too much money going for something we won't need. I am also of mixed opinions, a ship like this is certainly good for a sovereign nation, but it's just the wrong time. but still, 24 crewman means 24 jobs plus reserve plus shore crew....

Least its armed fully, unlike our Type-45 destroyers, which are still not fully armed:nope:

She is also the first russian made ship to serve in a NATO member navy. Incorrect the Greek Navy operates several Russian built Zubr class LCACs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zubr_class_LCAC) NATO Code name Pomornik.

sturm ship to ship missile system NATO designation/code name please? The only 'Sturm' missiles I found were Anti-Tank missiles.

Anyways looks like a nice little Cutter you got. Use her well. :salute:

the only info we get are from the media, which is VERY dumb in this country, lacking of all aspects of information confirmation and background check, so errors may have been included, so any correct info will be apreciated
Thanks TLAM Strike for the update, the Pomornik class is an air cushion vessel, not a ship (in traditional sense), maybe this is what they ment.

This is the same missile (AT-6 Spiral), there's a shipborne version of it.

You know what I'd like to see? I'd like to see more ships build on a similar (perhaps slightly larger) scale, with similar armament and performance, specifically for the mission of high-seas security (i.e. fighting piracy and smuggling). I get the sense that ships like this would be a much more effective deterrent than using DDGs and FFGs on that mission, which are both massive overkill and are unable to really act effectively due to rules and the need for caution. A ship like this, meanwhile, would have all the tools needed to patrol, escort traffic, and hunt down pirates if needed. And cost exponentially less - you could probably deploy two dozen such vessels to an area for the same cost and personnel requirement as a modern combat ship.

Otherwise, I'm sure Slovenia isn't about to jump in on the pirate hunt, but a ship or two is exactly what's needed to secure small territorial waters and prevent illegal activity in them. More of a coast guard mission, yes, but it's good to have teeth for it.

Most large navies are still indoctrinated to fighting a large scale war, a toe to toe with the russkies. Slovenia is a fairly new power, with a more modern doctrine, anti piracy, anti terrosrism, anti smuggler.
And this one ship is more than enough to patrol our coastline. 2 patrol helicopters would get the job done suported by two small patrol boats. We get air support from Aviano air base and croatia is of no threat to us.
And the talk of the town is that Triglav is going to join the pirate hunt arround Somalia as soon as the crew is ready and experienced

Ha, ha! So our navy will now total two ships, one coats guard cutter and our inflatable boat used by our special forces. Slovenia truly is climbing on the world stage, isn't she? :O:

In all seriousness, it's about damn time we get something that can be fitted with more than a simple machine gun. It's true, we don't need a large navy, and we need multifunctionally, yet Slovenia is for all intents and purposes a country without a navy or any sort of naval protection. Reminds me of our air defence, done by Italy who supplies the fighters and by Austria, who scans our airspace. Oh, don't forget the three pilatus's planes and a couple of anti-air missiles. Banana republics have a stronger compliment of units.

Not that I'm saying we need a bigger and better equipped army, it's just that our military leadership is as worth as a slug commanding an army group, sooner or later, all hell will break out.

All in all, a good addition for our boys. At least now, they won't need to hide anymore.

hell yea, we can have the best equipt navy and army that can stand it's own despite the small size.... if the politicans stop discussing what happened in the years 1945 and 1946. no political will to become an important economic and military player. you dont have to be a superpower anymore to make a statement, just well led (which we are not no matter which party is in power)
