Just got myself killed...er, but some mean escorts. Had cams and contacts off this patrol so no SS's.

What was wierd and I don't recall ever seeing this was 2 ships protected by 8 escorts. Had to be important targets I told myself, knowing that the game doesn't program that way, it made me want to atttack anyway.

Early Dec 44 just a lil north of Formosa. Wind was zero, no fog, terrible attack conditions with all the escorts IDed as Type A-D's, carrying 6 Y guns each. I did track almost to morning hoping for better conditions, but knew the planes would be thick at daylight and I did have 300 ft of water.
I should've just left.

I dived when ship was spotted, they had no radar, about 7000 yards. I decided to turn my stern towards them to use my M18's as all bow were 16's and thought I could haul arse after I shot without having to turn. I dived deep went to standard speed to make the turn, as I came to scope depth the DD's had picked me up and were just 1500 yards away...fire the sonarman instead of a torp I yelled.

I don't know how many attacked but many were near. I bet the first pass they dropped a hundred charges, but as usual hitting flank as they sped up seemed to work and they fell behind.

Then it seemed they came from every angle. I had dropped a few decoys and was below the thermal. I didn't even hear a ship speed up on a run, just near me, but charges went off like a machine gun....100% damage and dead.

Why are all the dang escorts in Formosa late war those dang Type escorts? Lil old things throw about 24 charges per run in one long pattern.

Oh, well........Back to my base save...:haha:

By late war the special made escorts like the Type A, B C etc were more common and plentiful so they were around more and so many merchants were sank, they could afford to assign 8 escorts to two ships.I remember reading thunder below about Barb's last patrol, two medium merchants and one small with an Akizuki class DD(Terutsuki) and 5 smaller escorts for just 3 ships, not even large ones either. When in formosa straights if seas are calm and cant do night surface attack, I wait to attack until in deeper waters, if they wont reach before out of my area, do what they would do in RL if they couldnt get an attack, contact report bc in RL there were other subs who could get them.Team effort and all. Then again, I have attack as you did and got away with it, luck sometimes plays a part.

The one I plan to do if possilbe one I learn to use S3D is to make it so surface attacks are possible even on convoys with radar equipped escorts.Japanese radar was pretty inferior and subs could still make night surface attacks on convoys with radar.Tang comes to mind but others.I think their radars max range should be 5000 yards...respectable distance and not every escort should have radar either. Shallow waters, could attack on surface and only submerge if you have to.Sorry they got ya, better luck next time.Least you dont follow my rules, I get killed, Im dead, new career.:arrgh!:

Oh well, I just suck today. Got plane contact, dived right away to 150 ft...BOOM..didn't sink me, but had left all my good gunners on the DG from the night before and got them all killed. I forgot to remove them from last nights action...when will I learn.
RSRD really nerfs the TMO planes so this seldom happens. They do get the deeper bombs later war....but geesh.

Think I'll watch a movie, just sucking out today.

Would've loved deeper water, but none coming...just worse, but usually 300 ft is a plenty to outrun the charges. I wish I had cams on, would've loved to see what happened since I didn't hear any ships above me.

Edit...Dang, I decided to continue on with all my dead gunners. Went down to 165 ft and was reworking my men when that same plane just came back...boom, deck gun, scope, AA guns all damaged...I can't recall ever taking damage at 165 ft.....Well, we'll throw these guys overboard and get some more when we return, well, guess I could save and reload and bring them back to life....It's a miracle..

I dunno if these (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=1202436&postcount=9) worked their way into RSRD or not. But your sure to run into them using TMO alone.

Yeah.. so.. i went a little overboard. :O: But it's beautiful man, just beautiful! I couldn't resist! :D

That's just sick.....

8 Y guns with double roll offs...geesh, bet they drop 50 charges per run, hate to run into a set of them.

Frankly I don't know if RSRD has them or not, but I think RSRD includes the Type D's, so would nerf them back down to just 6.....just...

I doubt it. I believe, Lurker is very exacting with historical detail. Where as I will take some artistic license from time to time. One of those times, being the DC throwers for late war jap tin cans. :D

edit:
bet they drop 50 charges per run,

No, they don't. Reload time on the Y guns prevents that. (i'm not THAT sick). each Y gun has 1 charge per pass. Although i did test it with a fast reload... now THAT was sick. I should have took some screenshots of that.

That's pretty cool. When I did the 3 kaibokan, I tried many things to get the pattern I wanted, to no avail. One idea was even to place the actual node for the thrower many 10s of meters in front of the thrower, then have the actual thrower offset the same amount aft. The test was to see if they discharged as the thrower node passed the target. The idea was to have some facing forward, some aft (still throwing sideways, but the nodes would be forward or aft), and another kind that was normal. Didn't woik.

Kaibokan held over 120 charges, though, those things would have been nasty had they started cranking them out when they should have (before the war).

lol ducimus, yea the type D's are tough, but good job.Nice first line in the linked post " Well, your F_ _ _ed now. :woot:" LOL

The Type D's have never killed me but they have gave me a few fits evading and damaged my boat pretty heavy, the explosions seem to go on forever also. They are tough
