First off I'd like to say I've been lurking the forums for a bit and just like most other sim crowds out there you guys seem mature and helpful.

So my expertise has been in Flight Sims like IL2:1946 and WWIIOL but I'm a sucker for anything sim so I thought I'd give it a try. I did all the tutorials and some reading and just did my first mission in the 1939 campaign. Get to the grid location, drop my speed for fuel concerns, finally spot a lone C2 and get to periscope depth. :arrgh!: I lined up his course with the ruler, put another ruler line about 1km 90 degrees off his course and parked my butt right there. I gave him some time to make his way to me before raising the periscope and when I did he was 012 in the gyro in front of me heading portside (lingo?) and 900m. Perfect! Launch all 3 tubes at him and wait... BOOM!, BOOM!, BOOM! That limey ripped in half!

I go to take a screenshot and guess what? The game crashes . Figures right when my adrenaline was pumpin after my first campaign kill ever. No saves or nothin. Oh well I just won't take anymore screenshots I guess haha. I got the bug though so I'm comin back for more. I want to eventually learn to target manually, and use the map without any assists. I'm at 65% difficulty right now so I figure I'll do a couple campaigns like that to learn the ropes more. And ID ships quicker. Ya guys got any advice and maybe critique the mission I ran?

I'm sorry, 'New Guys' aren't allowed to have a story, not until after 1000 posts.

:rotfl2: Just kidding.

WELCOME ABOARD! :sunny:

There is always a chance that the screenshot was coincidental. What are your specs? Are you playing stock or a supermod?

I had some probles back when the game was new. Sometimes I would sink a ship, and as it was going down the game would crash. After talking to a lot of people and experimenting I figured out that it was either a sound file or my onboard sound. I started using a mod that modified the sound files (DBSM) and got my first real sound card at about the same time. Whichever it was, I've never had the problem since.

It could be any number of things, but if you've been lurking you know that we have any number of people who are able and willing to help.

Ahoy and welcome!

Are you by any chance using the Res Fix mod to run the game at a higher resolution than its native res? A lot of people have CTD issues when they try to take screenshots after adding the mod and changing the game's resolution.

If you're not using it... I got nothin'. :06:

As Steve noted above, best first step is to post your PC specs and list any mods you are using.

Hey Frau, yeah I have it installed. Good call. But it doesn't even work so it's just a file that I should get rid of I guess. It doesn't look too bad, even though my native resolution is 1920x1200.

I'm not even too worried about it, I'll just uninstall the res fix and see if that works. If it doesn't I don't mind I just won't take any more scrncaps.

The Res Fix does work fine for a lot of people, other than borking up the screenshots. I use it with no problems, I guess I lucked out somehow.

I know some folks are still trying to puzzle out what causes the CTDs. If you do a search here or in the Mods Workshop forum you may find some info that will help you sort things out to your satisfaction. Not sure why it's not giving you a better resolution at least.

Anyway - gute jagd und fette beute!

Welcome aboard,

Given the situation described I doubt this could be the cause, saving the game in any situation where there is combat or you're underwater can CTD almost like clockwork.

As frustration as the experience was, don't let that taint you; this is the best subsim out there; and with what's come out since it may well be the best one ever (imo). The mods are top notch, the only community that I know that is as dedicated to a game is Co8 for ToEE (Temple of Elemental Evil).

People here care and I've gotten a lot of help over the years from this group. Once you get the game up and running I've no doubt you'll love it, especially with GWX (in case you haven't installed it already). Once I installed that the game went from good to spectacular, it's more addicting than crack - there should be a warning label on it

Hey thanks everyone :salute:

Timmy that's awesome, I'm gonna probably get back into it once I get a new joystick. Had no idea my MS Sidewinder Force Feedback was connected by a thin straw of plastic to the ball in the center. Or else I wouldn't have hit it so hard after getting bounced!

I got GWX 3.0 and I'm downloading it right now but I really wanna get my resolution up to speed to fully enjoy it. I tried the Res Fix but it's not working. Maybe I'll try it again once I install GWX. Here's my DxDiag info.

Let me know if you need more.

Oh, and I also downloaded the game from Steam. So I'm not really sure if adding the files to my steamapps folder location is okay or not.

I'd suggest (if it's not already too late) that you d/l the GWX3.0 files from my FF account (link above my sig) because there have been recent reports of faulty files from teh GWX website (click on my sig).

You have a choice of the 8 file (exe plus 7 bin files) or the equivalent in torrent format or the single file exe installation, again in torrent format.
