Teams of veterinarians and police shooters have killed some 58,000 stray dogs in and around the Iraqi capital over the past three months as part of a campaign to curb an increasing number of strays blamed for attacks on residents.

The Baghdad provincial government said in a statement released Sunday that 20 teams have been moving around Baghdad and the outer-lying districts daily looking for and putting down the dogs. The operation, which was first announced in late 2008, only truly took off this April after funds were allocated for the project.

The surge in strays -- estimated by provincial officials to number around 1.25 million

Many, many years ago there was a great gathering dogs who held a competition to see which one had the most sexy ass so they took off there asses and put them on display. Then out of the blue a dog shouted out "fire" and in the mad scrabble to re-attached there asses many went on the wrong dog, and to this day when you see a dog sniff another dogs ass that dog is trying to locate there ass.

you may be misinterpreting a prohibition on eating meat that has been "improperly" killed:

Forbidden to you (for food) are: Al‑Maitah (the dead animals — cattle — beast not slaughtered), blood, the flesh of swine, and that on which Allaah’s Name has not been mentioned while slaughtering (that which has been slaughtered as a sacrifice for others than Allaah, or has been slaughtered for idols) and that which has been killed by strangling, or by a violent blow, or by a headlong fall, or by the goring of horns — and that which has been (partly) eaten by a wild animal — unless you are able to slaughter it (before its death).......But whoever is forced by severe hunger with no inclination to sin - then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful

al-Maa'idah 5:3

In any case, a Muslim would not eat a dog as eating any animal with fangs is haram (prohibited or forbidden) with the strange exception of the hyena which is halal (permitted). It should be noted that there is considerable disagreement amongst Islamic scholars whether hyenna should be halal or haram.

But I have not found any references in my translations of the Qur'an to the prohibition of killing any animal if you don't intend on eating it.

There is a Hadith that specifies the killing of specific animals and prohibits the eating of them. These would include rat, scorpion, crow, kite and voracious dog. [Sahih Muslim, Book 007, Number 2721]

This why you don't use Wikipedia as a source. The sentence in the Wikipedia article you linked to had two references associated with it. References 14 and 15. One reference is a newspaper and the other reference is a blog - not exactly an academic citation.

If you read both those references, you will find that neither reference supports the claim on Wikipedia that "in Islam it is considered sinful to kill animals for reasons other than food".

This is what is known as a phony citation and is, unfortunately, common on Wikipedia. Always check citations :yep:.... and never cite Wikipedia :har:

The Frau has to remind her students (college) about wikipedia. It is a greaet place to start your research. I feel that Wikipedia was one of the best things to come from the Internets Tubes since free porn.

Even at the doctorate level, I often start at Wikipedia. But as I have to remind my co-workers the strength of a wiki is that anyone can add stuff. The weakness of a wiki is that anyone can add stuff.
