View Full Version : Feds halt BP progress in Gulf

I couldent find the original thread must be at page 4 or something....
The fed's have halted BP's testing of the newly fitted cap with "an abundance of caution".
The delays were a stunning setback after the oil giant finally seemed to be on track following nearly three months of failed attempts to stop the spill, which has sullied beaches from Florida to Texas and decimated the multibillion dollar fishing industry.

Why would this be stopped?
NEW ORLEANS – BP's work on capping the Gulf of Mexico gusher was frozen Wednesday after the federal government raised concerns the operation could put damaging pressure on the busted well that could make the leak worse.
Worse? Really? I'm perplexed once again. Does the government really want to stop this oil leak? Or has it been so politicized that to stop the leak will hurt the enviro's cause?
I just don't get it!

I'm not sure even they know anymore... If they ever did :hmmm:

Making the leak worse is hardly something insignificant. If something needs to be tested to see if it wont' make the problem worse, it may be a wise decision. But if so, please do this testing quickly!
It is all about mitigating risk. If you wait six months to test something, the value of the testing may be overshadowed by the continued leaking.
However, suppose the inspectors' concerns are valid and using this equipment makes the leak worse or what if a failure of this new piece of equipment makes it impossible to ever stop the leak? That would kinda suck.
I think it is wise to be concerned with what will happen to all that pressure if the leak is capped. It has to go "somewhere".

BP had a plan in the works to close the valve slowly to check for those very problems.
The Feds said NO stop right where you are !

According to the science dudes they interviewed re this delay on the morning news, they want to take a longer/second look at the seismic activity readings for the ocean floor surrounding the source of the current leak, and get additional pressure readings at the site before proceeding.
This is being done to make sure the pressure build-up in and around the failed blow-out preventer falls within certain parameters and is consistent in doing so. If it does not, it could compromise the safety and effectiveness of the next part of the process or indicate that what they have done so far is not having the desired effect, meaning that the "next step" in the process would not work any better than all the previous tries at capping the leak AND might just make things worse.

German TV and radio news covered it. The closing of the valves went not as smooth as was expected by BP. The oil kept on gushing out with high pressure, it was feared that the whole constuction would break if the valves close any further.
Sentiments pro or against "the Feds" have little to do with it. Let's not forget that it is not the Feds but BP who caused this mess and whose plans so far have not worked.

Yeah, it's a question of being as sure as possible that the pressure is not 1) too high, leading to safety concerns with the new capping attempt, or 2) too low, which would indicate that there is most likely another leak already relieving some of it and which will have to be taken into consideration as well.

But it was preident Obama who said very briskly, that he took responsibility for BP's actions sinse the accident on the oil rig occured. By result Mr. Obama is now responsible for all actions BP takes or doesn't take.

Its the freakin gulf of mexico not the San Adreas fault for gods sake.
Why the hell wasent all of this thought of before now.
Again... BP was not going to slap it shut and risk a blowout they were going to slowly incrimentally test the thing.
As to Obama I distinctly remember him stating "Plug the damn hole".
I really have to question the motives here.

I'm sure it was. Obama wants a crisis now to offset his other missteps, but it will backfire on him like so many other things. Incompetance, perhaps. Dissillusioned more likely.

Senators call for a halt to drilling........... in Libiya :o
The four senators from New York and New Jersey, already seeking an investigation into the Lockerbie bomber's release from prison last year, kept the pressure up Wednesday by calling on BP to suspend its oil drilling plans in Libya until it can be determined whether the oil giant played any role in his release in exchange for a contract.
Now I dont pretend to know what all was going on there but it really is getting strange.
Eventually BP will just say "Know what? We quit !" and go out of buisness or be absorbed by...

Exactly. Had I been BP it would have happened as soon as Obama said he was in charge and would have been further amplified after the congress show trial of BP execs.

The Deepwater Horizon well on the steep slope of the canyon wall is very susceptible to tectonic movements and may further endanger the stability of the well ceiling.
While the gulf is not exactly Southern California, it is not a stranger to large earthquakes

What I'm saying is....IMO Obama is a crap POTUS and is becoming increasingly aware of the growing disillusionment of the American electorate in him.
I should imagine he will cover his ar$e and ensure no blame will be attached to him.

Again... why was this not considered aforehand, they knew the new cap was going on, they knew BP was making progress, they knew the 'plan'. It is only when the plan comes to fruition they say "Oh wait hold on a minute lets not be so hasty". At best its piss poor planing and an utter lack of foresight. Another familiar pattern.
Also it begs the question of why in the hell are they drilling in such a precarious place?

No arguments from me on this. While I don't consider BP to be "evil", at the same time, it appears that BP acted very irresponsibly. It can be argued, and probably will, whether the government should have allowed or not allowed BP (and the other oil companies) to act irresponsibility. But government action/inaction should not recuse BP from their responsibilities for acting... well.. responsibly.

BP has been once again getting a slating in the US although this time via the Senate and about the Libyan bomber of Pan Am 103, some chat show-types sounded like we were the new Afghanistan/Iraq/Korea, and yet even my wife knows that the major shareholder is JPMorgan Chase - yes the very, very large US investment firm! Where are the media banging on their doors asking them to pay dearly for what THEY have done. :stare:

Well seeing as how given the way things are going a major shareholder in BP is going to pay.
Speaking of that I have heard some rumblings of BP not paying up settelments in a timely manner... what happened to that slush fund?

Some things in a mission like this you cannot precisely forsee. They measured a chnage in seismic activity in the area due to the valves slowly being closed, and this was according to a range and shcmee they did not expect. It is a normal and sensible decision then you obserbe what is going on for a little bit longer than originally projected in the "plan". Last news is they expect to move on according to plan soon, just with the said delay.
delays for observing the influence of the cap and the closing valves on the behavbioor of the oil well and the seismic structure in the area were pre-planned. the planned pauses just were longer than forseen, due to unforseen range of seismic chnages.
no conspiracy here, SW. No evil Feds trying to mess up free business and throwig mud at BP. That BP has a mask of mud over its face - is BP's very own fault - they did the damage. the faut of governments has been "only" that they allowed hilariously mild controls on security, and made security rules for deep drilling that the norwegian experts mocked about as not being security rules at all by their own Norwegian standards.
The oil lobby was very successful over the past decades to prevent any tighter legislation that would cost more precious money of their profits. Recent legal disputes between the lobby and the government just shows how powerful this lobby is.

I'm like the others crossing my fingers we have been disapointed with this before.
The story I heard is that they closed a valve and "Oil is no longer flowing into the gulf." Though further tests had to be made wherein they have to open it again. Pressure differential tests.
To kinda make sure that if they cap it here it doesent pop out somewhere else. But what happened to the relief well?

Sorry, did not mean any offense... I was reminded of a sign I saw at the public swimming pool when I was a kid. It read something like:
WELCOME TO OUR OOL
NOTICE THERE IS NO P IN IT
PLEASE KEEP IT THAT WAY
And, I don't know how true this is, but it is rumored that if one pees in a public swimming pool, the water around them will turn blue.
I think it would be much more fun to throw a Tootsie bar in the pool, though. :D
