hello everybody,
I periodically come back to the old sim. Never tried SH4 because I personally feel unrelated to the pacific scenario and I'm certainly not going to buy SH5 at any price because of the internet requirement thingy).
I play at something near 90% realism and after 3 patrols (the first one being pre-war), I have sunk 20.000 t worth of merchants, but I only receive about 200 - 250 renown per patrol (so now I have more or less before my 4th patrol only 500).
I am aware that the game awards renown based only on tonnage and realism, but I remember being able to switch from my IIA tipe to IID or maybe VII in 4 or 5 patrols.
If this continues, I will be (if I amb lucky), stuck with my IIA until my 10th or 11th patrol, if and only if I do not update my boat (I remember the VII being price at 2.500).
Is this normal? I am missing something?
Thanks and good hunt!
With 500 renown you will be able to get a IID when it becomes available in Oct 1939 I believe.
There is a small mod that does allows for the replacement of the 500 renown for reaching and patrolling your area for 24 hours that was removed from GWX.

You could try WB's replacement renown mod, works with GWX3, in fact I'm downloading it myself right now -

Using renown to buy new equipment is not realistic. You can edit the basic config file to remove this.:know: NYGM mod does this.
What I do is to remove renown for equipment and personnel upgrades, and then use the renown to track my progress in the war until I get sunk (I have never been able to finish the war (DID+100%):wah:
I find this a better solution for the problem rather than editing the saved game files to increase renown.:DL

Thanks for the replies...
To Herr Berbunch: I might try that, but I don't want to mess around with mods, I've lost a lot of careers doing this... and saving at the wrong moment (I actually SAVED one corrupt Save pushing while in the loading screen a LOT of keys + ALT-TAB, shaking the computer, putting it upside down, etc..., I ACTUALLY SAVED IT, just to be depth charged by an angry DD near Scapa one game month later).
Soooo, Should I try it, WHEN do I have to mod (using JGME)? I know I must do that while in port. Is it important AFTER or BEFORE patrol?
To Irish1958. mmmm, I don't thing that renown to get things done is SO unrealistc. I imagine this system as being a mixture of , renow, yes, but also networking, high profile friends, etc...
I've now been working in a big company for two years and a half, I now know how some people get the two armrest chairs, the blackberry curve, chromed stapler or the windowed office. :)
The question is: is it normal to get 250 renown for a 10.000 t patrol??
Thanks and good hunt!

I don't know, I usually enable mods before starting up Commander so that would be before (or a long time after) a patrol, I've never done it with the game running.
If you're worried about save games, you could locate the saves and copy one (renamed) and try it that way.
Fingers crossed

I keep telling people that I play SH4 with u-boats IN THE ATLANTIC.
I certainly respect your decision not to buy or play it, but the reason given is invalid.
Mods are installed between patrols. I think that would be after the last one and before the next one.

Oh! That WOULD be cool (I don't read every post in subsim, so I didn't know that playing SHIV in the atlantic against the allies was possible). Anyway, my computer doesn't have the specs :(
I assume this reason will be ok for you.

The amount of renown awarded is proportionate to the realism setting you have.
Eg: Sinking a ship worth 1000 renown whilst being at 50% realism would mean you would only get 500 renown.

Funny, I've never thought about it in five years of play, but you would think the opposite would be true - more renown would be awarded at lower difficulty levels, rather than less. That's why it's less 'realistic'.

I think using 50% was a bad example........
A 1000 renown ship would yield 100 renown at 10% realism and the same vessel would yield 900 renown at 90% realism :DL

Not quite, at 10% realism a 1000 renown ship would yield 325. At 90% realism you would get 925. Just to complete all your examples, at 50% realism you would get 625 in renown. An additional example, at 0% realism you would earn 250 in renown. It's geared that way so if you decide to play at 0% realism you still earn renown.

I'm sorry if I seemed pushy or overbearing. I know that what is "valid" is purely my opinion. It's just that I've had to explain that so many times it starts to drive me crazy when I see it.
I also realize that not everyone reads all the boards as faithfully as I do. Again, I apologize.
I had trouble with SH4 myself until I finally got a new graphics card and memory upgrade.

to Sailor Steve: No hard feelings!
Is there a guide (I think in vanilla SH3 there was one ingame) which defines the renown I get per ship sunk? I didn't find it in the GWX 3 manual.

I think you want the file GWX_renown_updated.pdf, which I have but I can't remember where I d/led it from. I can't find it on Jimbuna's Filefront page but my eyes could be going wonky in which case he will most likely provide a direct link to it.
Didn't find anything in Downloads here either with a quick search, which doesn't mean it's not there.
Anyhoo someone's bound to know where to find it - if not, you can PM me with an email address and I'll send it this evening.

25 for a lightship, all that easy renown and I've always just passed them by... :wah:

Aren't lightships the ones that are kind of like floating lighthouses, to warn other ships away from danger spots? I never sink those because I figure they're helping out every country's ships, whether friend or foe.

That is precisely one of the things that needed changing.
Lightships are classed as Environmentals ingame and are therefore indestructible.
That is also the reason there is always a small tug or other next to them so that the lookout will call it out.

yes i found this out after running into one. sunk the tug and started throwing all kinds of torpedoes at it and it never sunk. i was peoed because i had no more torpedoes for the rest of the patrol lol. to the guys who are against getting SH5 based on the internet. i purchased it and did not want to either based on the internet connection required but i did anyways. it tells you the only reason it requires that is to back up your saves. so if you don't have the internet connection i believe you can still play the game and the next time you connect, it reups the saves with the server and it also states that if they decide to drop the server they will have a patch for it. i will say though that if you plan on getting it make sure your video card and system is well over the requirements for it does take a huge toll on your system.:salute:

From the official site FAQ:
Is there an "off-line" option?
No. The added services to the game (unlimited installs, online storage of saved games and the fact that you don’t need the game disc to play) require you to have an online connection while playing the game.
From the game specs and the packaging:
http://static2.cdn.ubi.com/logos/ubisoft/OSP-PC-Optional-US.png
Unless Ubi has changed something that is not reflected in official game specs and marketing, you must maintain a constant internet connection to play the game. The savegames backup has indeed been hyped by Ubi as a presumably invaluable "feature" that the constant connection allows for - but it is not the reason for it, which is DRM pure and simple.
AFAIK if there is currently a way to play SH5 without a constant internet connection, it would be through illegal means only (and discussing it here would not be looked kindly upon to say the least).

Yes, I suspected that when I wasted 3 torpedoes and 50 cannon rounds on one and only managed to set it ablaze (and get an headache myself) without sending it under the waves. My wrath then turned to the tiny fisher boat, that went down with 5 cannon shots projectiles.

well all i was saying frau kaleun (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/member.php?u=251195) was not to put a game down just because a little requirement. i enjoy playing the game and find it open for GWX mod but i can only hope. but i do feel people should give it a try and if ya don't like it return or something or don't play it. i still find myself playing SH3 all the time even though SH5 kills it in graphics. there's just something about SH3 that's addicting. so in respect to everyone i am not busting anyone's nuggets.:D

It's all good, mate. Personally I don't care who plays what or why - we all have our own reasons for why we like one or both or neither.
My only concern with your post about SH5 was that you referred somewhat obliquely to the possibility of playing the game without meeting the requirement of a constant online connection. AFAIK crcumventing that requirement would require one to be in possession of an illegally obtained or hacked copy of the game, and any ongoing discussion alluding to that possibility might eventually cross the line when it comes to Subsim's rules and regs.
Just didn't want anyone to go there, even accidentally, without getting at least one friendly "heads up" on the issue. :DL
