Playing with GWX 3.0 and based at Kiel with a Type II. It takes forever to sail down the Kiel Canal - the time compression won't go any faster than 4x for some reason. I timed it and it's actually quicker to sail via the Skagerrak! (in real life time obviously ;))
Is there a fix for this?

I highly recommend you install SH3 Commander. From this application you can tweak the max time compression (TC) for many different events. The one you are looking for is max TC when close to land. I wouldn't exceed 64 TC if I was you.
This is only one of the aspects of the game you can tweak and there are many other that SH3 Commander allows you to change. So try it out and have fun.

You don't need commander to address the problem.
Documents - SH3 - data - cfg - main.
Find TIME COMPRESSION.
Third catagory is Land Proximity.
Change the number to whatever you desire, but be aware that SH3 will no longer stop time compression for land. (You can collide with land, thus ending your carreer.)

True, but Commander does so much more it's kind of silly not to have it. It not only makes things like this very simple, but it completely changes the game.

Commander can do some neat stuff, but whether one chooses to install it, or any other mod, comes down to persomal preferences and choices.
