Lovely. I already imagine a future headline in the Berliner Morgenpost: "Bathing women ripped to pieces by white shark in the Wannsee". Or "Mating season of Anacondas closed five open air baths in northern Germany". Or "Sewage disposal plants get special filters to prevent piranhas entering the public drinking water pipelines."

They made the danish news too.
The story came out on the same day as an announcement that over a dozen dog breeds had been outlawed in Denmark.

Truth is stranger than fiction. We had confirmation that there's at least one large alligator in Lake Worth a while back. Another escaped "exotic pet", it would seem. My roommate works for a charity that cares for big cats, most of which come from homes where they were adopted as pets and were then abandoned because they became unmanageable. One would think that a person wealthy enough to afford such an animal would not be so stupid as to try to keep one as a pet. Apparently not:roll:

Bah people are by far pose the gravest threat to tourists.
From pickpocket, luggage thief, kidnapper, rapist, or pedophile or some psychopaths. And you just have to experience losing all your payment means in a foreign country and not to mention travel documents as well to know that being pickpocketed or having lost a luggage could be a real trip and holiday breaker/canceller.

With dogs and breeds? :timeout:
It was pit bulls, and the like.
Bulldogs also made the list.
No german shephards or dobermans though.
In almost all cases it's not the dog, but the owner that's at fault.
But these are the breeds that most atract those kinds of people.
And those kinds of people are the ones that deliberately make the dogs aggresive.
Very sad situation.
Oh!
Already living dogs are exempt. (smile)
The ban is on dogs born after a certain date in future.

A saltwater croc would probably have a largish 'gator without too much drama, but as they are from different continents it's never likely to happen unless some dumb bugger puts two of them into the same pen in a farm.
Alligators have broad rounder and shorter snouts. Croc snouts are narrower and more triangular.
Sizes vary depending on the species but the Saltwater crocs are the largest living crododilians with large speciments getting up to over 6m (~20ft) long and weighing over 1200kg (~2600lb).
Alligators tend to be smaller ~4m long and weighing around 360kg but the largest recorded specimen was measured at 5.84m (19ft 2in) Seeing two specimens of that size going at it would be interesting but I'd put my money on the croc.

You mean to tell us that you are unable to open up a wikipedia page on crocodiles and a page on alligators and read it; or use the Googles and type "difference between crocodile and alligator"? :nope:
Dude, use the Internets Tubes. They are there for you. There are some questions in life where it is better that you find out the answer on your own. :D

It's not as cold anymore as it used to be in the past. Many different species, especially insects and maritime organisms, are advancing north in Europe, following the growing temperatures all over. Tropical diseases are spreading from the south/equator to the North, too.
But ignore that. Global Warming has been proven to be an alarmist myth. :D

Well, Skybird is right in claiming that a lot of life forms that were formerly only found in southern regions have advanced northwards. They wouldn't come here if it was getting colder. ;)

Except we're not talking about Italian squirrels or some such we're talking about crocodiles. I'm pretty sure even if global warming is caused by humans it still hasn't turned Germany into year round croc habitat, at least not yet.

65 year old, 3m long; 170 kg heavy alligator escaped from a show camping in Frankfurt, and moved down the streets in the outskirts of Frankfurt, calmly, peacefully. The animal was caught alive, and brought back, calmy, and peacefully.
BTW, room temperature over here 31°C, this day's outside maximum in this town, in the shadows, 39°C. Stecht mich an, ich bin gar.

I guess it was a misunderstanding then. I thought your reply was supposed to mean that there is no global warming.

It's those kinds of misunderstandings that gets countries like Poland overrun! :DL
So to recap:
The premise of this thread is that crocodiles are infesting German waterways. I just innocently comment that crocodiles would not survive a German winter. Skybird treats us to a lecture on global warming. I respond that regardless of all that it still isn't warm enough to support crocodiles and suddenly i'm a human cause global warming denier? :woot::DL

I thought I was soooo funnyyyh - but more and more the grim truth in Germany gets revealed:
http://www.bild.de/BILD/news/2010/07/17/irrer-fang-in-rostock/piranhas-im-schwanenteich.html
A tabloid, okay, but nevertheless. Piranhas found in a lake in the North-Eastern city of Rostock at the Baltic coast. Ironically, the lake is named Swan Lake.
One wonders: for how long anymore? :D Piranhas are swarm fishes, and where there is one, there must be more.
P.S. I swam repeatedly in the nearby Dortmund-Ems-Kanal in the past three weeks. I know by own experince that the water is not refreshing anymore , but is really damn hot. :) since last month has been found to be the warmest June sijnce the beginning of weather recordings, I can imagine well that a swarm of piranhas can live very well in German lakes and rivers currently. Maybe they will leave again when it gets too warm for them. :D

More terror for unsuspecting tourists! This time it is a free walking puma or lion near a lake in Pommern:
http://www.welt.de/vermischtes/kurioses/article8671502/Behoerden-warnen-vor-freilaufender-Grosskatze.html
Germany goes wild! The brother of a friend of mine meanwhile caught up Malaria two weeks ago - while staying in central Bavaria. Probably a misled Mosquito. :dead: Oh, and I got bitten by some fish last week while I was swimming. Two 1 cm-wide, crescentic shallow wounds on my right archilles heel - no joke - , upper and lower teeth row obviously, not deep, nothing serious, but you can see the small punctures from the small teeth, and when it bit while I was swimming, it stung much more than just a wasp or a bee. I wonder what it was.

It becomes more and more weired! Today's episode: Tourists beware Germany's radioactive boars!
http://www.spiegel.de/international/zeitgeist/0,1518,709345,00.html
actually, wild pigs are a big problem in Berlin even without radioactivity. If you ever go there and walk in the Grundewald and bordering parts of the city, you need to expect contact with shamelessly fearless wild pigs at arms length, family groups even walk in daylight down the street and breed in residents city garden's. So keep an eye on your dog, and be prepared to quickly take it on the line. There have been meetings between both species, and they all ended with the wild pigs making short process with the dog, no matter the size.
