View Full Version : Just noticed a strange typing error on the loading screen

Just this minute noticed a strange typing error on the loading screen (GWX3),the screen with the wolf's head and torpedo. This is concerning the notepad to the right where you get the tonnage scores and losses for the month. It says -
'news for Dec 1939,
monthly losses,
1 Uboats for 101,823 tons of AO1'

Any ideas what AO1 means?

:hmmm:

Sorry Paul, I've just been trawling through the completely infallible t'interweb and can see references to (US) ranks/rating, submarine HMS (then HMAS) Otway, and flak guns - none of which seem to be what you're after despite being associated in some way. Hopefully somebody with a large bookshelf full of reference books can refer to the correct one and let you know.

Or it could just be made up, but you'd hope not!

I have noticed this sometimes too - the last bit of whatever is supposed to be there is overwritten by the name of my savegame. I could always tell because I would name my savegames by patrol # and save #, for instance, p1_1, p1_2, and so on. It was always a savegame name that popped up at end of that "memo" in the loading screen. Why it happens I'm not sure but it doesn't seem to affect game performance when it happens so I never investigated further.

I can confirm this - had it happen to me many times and the game
still runs fine.

Kinda funny as I always save using my first name "Adin" and quite a few times the message on the notepad has quoted Hitler , which ends up as "Adolf HitlerAdin":rotfl2:

As I understand it this happens because there is a limited number of characters allowed for those messages. If one is too long you'll see that fluke. As noted, it means nothing as far as the game is concerned.

It is as Frau Kaleun has said, it is the name of your savegame. It is a stock game bug that does not effect game play.

Yep....and you'll more than likely find many more examples as you progress through the time periods.

According the above it doesn't stand for anything, it's just the name of one of Paul's savegames that a stock bug caused to be added to the end of the loading screen messages when he fired up the game.

Either that or the game just draws some random piece of text from some random file every time the "error" occurs.

I've always seen the name of a savegame, but then I stopped looking for it once I realized it was a glitch that wouldn't cause any other problems... so who knows?

I think it's always the name of the first savegame. I never noticed it in the stock game, only when more text than the standard data was added :hmmm: I am not sure whether the amount of the added text is important :06:

Sigh. Does anyone ever use the "Search" feature here anymore? This question has been asked and answered 10's of times over the last five years!

The problem is nothing to worry about, it's simply that SH3 has a limited number of display characters on the screen. Reloading a save game decreases the number of characters, due to the save game text taking up some of the otherwise free character space. The anomaly you see is simply part of the save game name overwriting the News text.

With millions of tonnes of information within this forum finding a link to EXACTLY what you are after can be difficult sometimes, thats why we usually create a post?

BAD:
C:\Games\SilentHunter\MODS\[My Mod] Conning Tower Emblem\data\

GOOD:
C:\Games\SilentHunter\MODS\(My Mod) Conning Tower Emblem\data\
C:\Games\SilentHunter\MODS\Conning Tower Emblem [My Mod]\data\
C:\Games\SilentHunter\MODS\Conning Tower [My Mod] Emblem\data\

Hi,

Is there a clear cut number of characters that work (save game name + message)? IIRC I sometimes had quite short messages and still saw the save game name :06:

Concerning the search function: sometimes it helps a lot when you know that what you are looking for exists already. At least for me. Sometimes I am looking for an old thread and it's not easy to find it, but since I know it exists, I continue trying... in most cases I can find it via posts/words I remember in the thread.

Cheers, LGN1

No fixed number of characters; the text is limited by display area, ie text with a lot of wide characters truncates sooner than text with a lot of narrow characters (despite emulating a typewriter, the font is not quite fixed width). In addition, the save filename text competes with the same display area, so the longer the filename, the less characters again.

I trimmed most of the "white space" out of the NewsMod back in 2006 (the text was even longer before then), and given that the problem a) only appears when reloading save games, b) only appears occasionally (ie months with longer lines of text or where user has used a long save filename) and c) has absolutely no impact on the game at all, I chose not to trim out any more. However, if it really distracts/bothers/upsets people, all they need do is edit SH3Cmdr\Cfg\Menu variable_**.txt. They'll be able to quickly see the lines (months) most likely affected and can edit out what they want.

Seemingly only for some. ;)

But the point is, it's been answered many times before post #8, if you know what I mean. People seem to forget that SH3 is five years old now; there's every likelihood that if there is such an obvious problem, it's been raised before. A search (not just by the OP but anyone thinking of guessing) can take less than one minute...well, perhaps now 10 minutes thanks to the impossible-to-read Captcha...but still...;)

F'instance, there's posts around practically telling guys who have install problems to format their drive, or perform other over-the-top actions. A simple keyword search could stop a lot of angst for both the OP and those providing, in good faith granted, but unhelpful suggestions, given the tried-and-tested solutions already available.

But I know, I'm p^ssing into a head wind...
