View Full Version : Does removing the deck gun actually improve performance,or is it a myth?

One thing that has always had me thinking, and still does,is the stories I have read about removing the deck gun.I know they removed them for real in an attempt to reduce drag and speed up dive times but is this modelled in the game? I dont know if some of you remove them just to maintain realism (even if the effects are not modelled) but I for one will be keeping my trusty ol deck gun. There is no finer moment than when pounding a lone merchant broadside to broadside on a dark night and have his light beam right on you!

Sorry if this topic may have been asked before,I simply cant remember and dont fancy sifting through what is likely to be 1000s of posts either.

I've never played far enough to have that option. As far as I know there is no effect at all, just as there are no thermal layers.

 I keep it under the hole war.But when you dive you can save some second, when the boat hit the surface probably. :ping:

Shame there are no therman layers Steve,it could have added an interesting tactical potential to the game.

@Vendor,I will probably keep the gun myself,no fun in using torpedoes ALL the time, its always nice to put them German helmets on and give em hell with the gun!
By the way,I like the quote in your signature,I live my life with the very same concept in my mind every day.

I think Commander does a good job of simulating them due to its Random function, but again I've never played enough to notice.

Removing the deck gun gives no improvements in performance.

The job Commander does is really quite spectacular at times...instead of going to extreme depth as of the norm I've occasionally evaded a hunter on the next patrol in 100 metres or less.

but in "RL" I say yes,

In RL a lot of captains DID in fact opt to remove their deck guns especially as air attacks were becoming more frequent and more dangerous, giving them precious seconds to get the UBoat under as fast as possible.

Air attack = bad news,big time! :o

Search the archives. There's been oodles of speculation, assumption and guessing, but not one person has ever quoted hard facts either way as to whether removing the deck had any effect on performance.

Accordingly, in the absence of cold, hard data, SH3Cmdr does not adjust performance. And I'm comfortable with this approach; the way I see it, any increase in performance achieved through removing the deck gun would be more than offset by the decrease in performance achieved through upgrading the Turm/Wintergarten...it works both ways, yet I never see anyone asking for a performance decrease when they load their Uboat with Flak Guns...;)

You now we "move slow here" so that's the way the test is different in many way,:yep:

Thank you for relevant info.
