Ok - Steam have a sale on atm, and I'm toying with buying one of the above.

Loved SH3, but have heard a lot of bad things about SH5, at least upon release.

So, as the sale is ticking down, in a nutshell, is SH5 now in a state that it is a good, stable game or should I go with SH4.

Urgent replies appreciated all :)

Thanks in advance (about 3 hours and counting...)

They are totally different games !

SH4 Szenario is in the Pacific with US-Subs againts the japanese fleet.
SH5 is like SH3 in the Atlantic on the german side.

In my eyes SH4 is better.
It got nearly the same gameplay like SH3 with much better environment.
There are many big mods you can get for SH4 that makes SH4 to an very nice subsim.
For example TMO, RFB and my work FOTRS.
SH4 with one of these mods is much better than SH5 if you like to play US-subs.

SH5 is buggy and not in a playable condition for now.
Only thing is that SH5 looks really nice, The 3D-Engine is well done but thats not enough for an good simulation.

It depends, some say that with a lot of mods Sh5 is really enjoyable.

Can't tell, need to get a new computer! :damn:

@Sable

I would say that it depends if you prefer the Pacific or the Atlantic theater (there's a HUGE difference).

It also depends if you have good specs (and some folks are gonna tell you a ''good conection'' too).

It also depends if you have the patience to check the forum for mods and information to get the game playable.

Choice is yours.

I've the following setup:

i5 OC
6gb DDR 3
4870 ATI

Must say I'm not too happy about the Ubi DRM they've implemented. My isp is pretty reliable - can the same be said for their servers...

SH4 with UBM addon will give PTO and ATO! Far better IMO than SH5!:yep:

I think you should be ok with this.

It failed once before (they offered me a free game), I can't tell for how long cuz it's been reported but I never experienced it (I was probably working, sleeping, or doing something else).

But I think the most important thing is that it depends what theater you prefer and it depends if you're patient enough to check the forum for all mods and information to get the game playable.

I love SH4, but these days I'm more interested in fleet boats than U-boats so that might be factor.

Your system should be more than adequate for SH4. I'd be surprised if you cant run everything at max. Can't speak about SH5 as I don't have it.

SH4 has both fleet boats and uboats. It's like two sims rolled into one. ( It also has 3 or 4 times the number of playable submarines. :haha: )

SH5 is going to need some work. Say.. a year and a half to a couple years worth, before it's really looking good.

It depends on what you like. If you want the best-looking subsim ever made, like the idea of being able to go anywhere in the sub and talk to the crew a la The Sims, and don't mind sinking the same few merchant models over and over again, being limited to four different models of the Type VII and having a limited campaign that ends in 1943 then SH5 is the game for you.

If you want to have graphics that are very nearly as good as SH5's, be able to run any of the four major u-boat types and have an excellent war-spanning campaign and the ability to play in the Pacific as well, you need SH4 Gold, which comes fully patched and ready to play in either theater and has a great many mods ready to load.

Thanks for the tips guys - most appreciated!

I eventually went for SH4+UBM. Think I will give 5 a bit more time to iron out the kinks.

Thank you very much for the help - and I hope to be posting more on here once I get me fish in the water!
