Please check out two pages of this thread , may be you can find some advice , the Nvidia 8400Gs is a little below the 8800GT recommended as a minimun GPU for Silent Hunter 5

For SH5 1024x768 yes. But if you have i.e. 24 inch display you will need a better one. Search for nvidia GTX260-216 or ATI 4870 1GB.

Im using 2x 8800 GTS'es in SLI on a 24" WS display and it runs fine (just cant have interior shadows on or water caustic effects or my FPS plummet).
MINIMUM would be one 8800 GTS I would assume.

i have a 8800GTX and the game detection tool says my drivers aren't good enough. the game worked though...
in any case i updated my drivers (driver version 2.5721,) and now the game detection tools shows my drivers with an earlier version and still not good enough.. it says i have 1.572
not sure what to do except ignore it and play
^ I had the same issue when I had to re install. Said I was using the 1.5 driver. Using a 9800gtx card.
It had me confused. Had to double check what drivers i had installed. (2.57)

I had the same problem. So much lag that it just isn't fun to play the game
anymore. But I only had the lag inside the sub, especially in the Control room and the machine room. I tried a lot of things, and some of them worked I guess.
I can now play the game with just a little bit of lag inside the sub.
You can try a few of these things:
- You can download this program: Kegetys Direct3D antilag. http://www.kegetys.net/dl.php/d3d_antilag101.zip
- Go to taskmanager. Process list. right-click on sh5.
There you can adjust the priority and affinity.
- Download gamebooster. It shuts down all unnessecary programs, wich
means more memory for the game.
- Overclocking. (be carefull not too overclock too much though :O:)

Also patch the game to 1.2 or disable shadows ? :)

I have patch 1.2, yes. Start with setting the graphics settings on it's lowest.
If it runs good you can try and put the settings on a higher level. :DL
