Have you been into your weapons managment screen, ignore the torpedoes - top right (I think) is your ammo for the Deck/Flack guns.

It has. Just click on the shell and it will load into the gun before you fire.

GWX has removed the default loadouts of star shells and AP shells, leaving only HE shells. The game will not auto-load the first shell because of this. You need to manually load the first shell, and then it will auto-load from then on.

Yep - you need to click on the icon for the deck gun on the left slideout panel and go to the gun station - then click on the HE (?) shell icon to load the first shell. From that point on you can either continue to man/fire the gun yourself, or return to the bridge/UZO/binocs view and order your crew (via the Watch Officer) to work it.

The reason for this is that the game is set up to load AP ammo first automatically, which cannot be modded out. However GWX does not put any AP ammo in your patrol loadout (for reasons of historical accuracy IIRC). So if left to its own devices the game will be waiting for your crew to "auto-load" ammo that just isn't there. Once you go to the gun station and select the HE ammo instead, the crew can start loading the ammo you actually have.

Edit: TOO SLOW DAGNABBIT! Needz moar kaffeene.

Now I have a question: Does it work that way only when you fire the gun yourself? I never do, and when I lock a target with the binoculars the crew seems to load and fire it just fine, every time.

Am I doing something right?

I've always had to go to the station and choose the HE ammo to get the gun loaded before any shells could be fired.

If I've already ordered the crew to fire at will, they will begin doing so as soon as I go back to the bridge or binocs or wherever. Or I can stay and start firing myself.

But if I've ordered the gun manned and told them to fire at will, nothing happens until I go to the gun myself and select the HE ammo.

I usually just go to the gun and select the HE shells at the beginning of a patrol, and then everything's good to go once I find something to shoot at.

I experimented once with adding a little AP ammo to the default GWX loadout, but never really stuck with it long enough to see if it would then auto-load when the gun was manned. I think that was when I started having CTD issues and had to sort that out, and I've never gone back and tried to workaround the issue again.

Yes if you ask the crew to do it for you you never realise the issue with the need to load the shells. You will experience it only if you man the gun yourself

Am I doing something right?

Indeed you are :03::O:

Huh, I must've gotten the wrong idea entirely about the auto-load issue. Maybe I was always wanting to man the gun myself when I first started using it.

Will have to try just ordering the crew to open fire next time and see what happens.

I always man the gun myself. I am a far better shot than even my best-trained gun crews.

The gun is loaded automatically provided the gun is manned prior to selecting the target.
