I've encountered my first enemy sub!! I can't ID it though it doesn't allow me to. This is in British waters! So I've loaded and reloaded and tried to take this thing down with torpedos a few times now and every time they turn at the last second and it misses. Anyone manage to take down an enemy sub? Also anyone ever manage to take down a ship by ramming it?

Finally managed to sink it.. just had to get reallly close. Then I never see any damage on it though I used external view to watch it hit the bottom no damage shown nor does it give me an icon showing that I sunk it..

Yep it was red.. Anyone know how to get the flak gunners to shoot? I can get them to man them but never shoot!

NEVEr try to take out a ship by RAMMING it. i have 37% hull integrity right now cause i accidentally hit a merchant in time compression. that means if i suffer 37 percent more damage im going down.

get the deck gun out...that works better

No I usually expend all of my ammo and I'm done.. the flak gun doesn't change ammo and it doesn't do any damage to ships.. Would be fun if there were actual life boats and we could gun those down too :) Ok maybe kinda mean but hey its a computer game. But the flak gun does NOT automatically fire when I get them to man them (both) and there are planes stalking me. They don't fire at all..

Today i encountered a Enemy sub, bridge crew spotted it, set an course to intercept him further down so i could just lay in periscope depth and watch him go by. Suddenly he submerges and fires like 7 torpedoes at once dont ask me how with 4 tubes {external camera} all missed, i went to periscope depth and i saw his periscope 500m in front of me, locked and fired 4 torpedoes at different depths, first one hit at 6 m if i remember correct.
When the kill was confirmed i looked at my nav map and didnt saw the sunk ship icon.. but it was a rememberable experience
Having read a book about subs during WW2 one thing commented upon was the sub on sub action, from memory the best ace only had 5 sub kills. plenty of cases of near misses though.
the problem is the size of a sub compared to a ship, a sub only has to turn lenghways to you and its targetable are is reduces to a box size the area of a dinghy, add the ability to move in 3 dimensions and getting one is difficult.
most of the success where more done by the subs being caught unawares by another sub.
:arrgh!:

I've encountered two enemy subs so far. From both experiences, I have to say that subs don't like to let you know you've scored critical hits on them. Both of my kills had submerged in an attempt to get away before slowly sinking, and presumably experiencing pressure breaches and the like.
First on caught me off guard, time compression didn't revert to 1 when he came into range, so by the time I was preparing to attack, he was in the process of diving. Managed to track him down using the hydro, and once he popped up, I laid some deck gun shells into him. He submerged a final time, and confirmed his demise with the external cam.
Second one was a friggin funny story. I knew there was a submarine in the area and was pretty damn close to me, so I decided to dive and try to track him down using hydro. Soon enough, I hear screeching and metal grinding. I am at about 100m down and take a look through the peri, and me and this damn Brit have locked our subs together....so I did the only logical thing I could think to do...and since I was under him and he was stuck on my conning tower.....
BLOW THE BALLASTS!
We eventually make it up to the surface, and I jump on the deck gun to finish him off before his sub slinks off mine, and he falls down to the bottom of the sea.
Despite my fun experiences with subs so far...none of been really aggressive towards me, and I'm a little disappointed. Seems like the enemy subs just run away all the time. But oh well.
Oh, and I have video proof of the second story :) at least the part where I force his sub to breach out of the water. Lol

... so, what, you're just teasing us with it? Post the damn video and share it, this I want to see

I'll post it sometime today. It's actually a boring video, but just funny to see a sub breach out of the water....with another sub directly below it
For those that haven't seen it, check out the Time watch documentary 'The hunt for U-864'

A pretty gripping account & reconstruction of an Underwater duel which ended with U-864 (an IXD 2 U-boat) being torpedoed and sunk by the British V-class Submarine HMS Ventura, the only WW2 instance of a submarine sinking another while both were submerged.

I've managed to sink only one enemy sub yet. I was searching for enemy convoys in Mediterranean when my watch officer spotted an enemy sub. It was at night, so I've managed to get fairly close to it (about 3 kilometres) and then submerged. I've shot a single G7e torpedo from about 700m and hit it in the bow. The explosion literally threw the sub up. It sunk in about 10 seconds.
On my first patrol I found one in the north of Poland. I could not lock the target so I could also not identify the ship by my officer. It was smaller then my uboot and had no flag. It turned in circles on the water. I surfaced the uboot and shoot one deckgun shot at him: No reaction, just turning circles... After that I shipped on and suddenly the uboot follows me  After about 1h a destroyer is coming right at me. I submerged but he knew exactly where I am and came right after me... and didn't attack the other uboot that was still surfaced.
What was going on? What kind of uboot was this? Why didn't it attack me? And if it was on my side, why didn't the destroyer attack it?
Crazy thing :hmmm:

I think it was Class U British or Polish sub.

The brit sub is pretty easy to ID. I fired three fish at one my crew managed to spot at ~ 1000m during night time. The first two were not set up correctly, but realizing my mistake at the last minute I set the last fish for a zero gyro and shot from the hip. It hit right unter their conning tower. AOB was ~70.
I, as well as my crew, I suppose, never felt a worse victory, watching her take her final breath within seconds. She sank before we could man the deck gun.
Fascinating ... never guessed you could encounter enemy subs.
The only Subs I so far encountered were german ones ... one in the Kiel Kanal, another one in the baltic sea, near Danzig. Travelled some time alongside the second one, before I veered away to follow my own mission
Just started a new Open Horizons II campaign with real navigation and I'm in the Baltic off Danzig and there's a sub nearby. I'm trying to track a Polish minelayer and a destroyer which are patrolling nearby (weather is clear, no wind, no waves - dangerous to surface at daytime). Keep getting a sonar contact but my hydrophone cant ID it. Sound is a faint twin screw turbine though. I haven't properly located it yet though because I don't want to waste my effort doing a full four bearing track of it and then lose the more dangerous contacts...
In the past I've usually found engaging them pointless because as soon as you open up with the deck gun they'll submerge (unless you get them with a lucky shot early on) and once they're under you've got no chance with the torpedoes.

You can easily destroy enemy sub with stealthy torpedo attack from periscope depth. However, you must use only electric torpedoes against them because steam torpedoes are easily detected, and enemy subs can evade them easily because of their small size.

I'm playing a Open Horizons II campaign as well. Sailing into the North Sea, past Norway, is when I noticed I was being followed by a sub marked in red on the map. It didn't attack me the whole time I was surfaced which made it seem as though it was another u-boat sent to help me patrol around Scapa Flow. Once I was visually close enough it looked like a British Triton Class. Though I'm no expert on British subs. Anyhow, I finally decide to sink it. I circled around to face it, still surfaced. He passed about quite close to me, less than 100m. The torpedo instantly killed it. In the log it noted that I sunk a U class sub. I have to admit I'm still not sure if it was a enemy or a friendly. I suspect it was enemy.
