Like the title says I have to do an agent insertion in Penang in June '44. Taking advantage of the fog I approached the drop area in daytime only to find it guarded by a destroyer. Because of the shallow water I'm easily detected, going surfaced is not an option because of the radar.
Of course I could try to sink the destroyer but that wouldn't be very stealthy and would alert everyone in the vicinity. So what do I do? Call it off?

I would think a sub skipper would try and wait the DD out. See if the bugger moves off eventually. if not 4 the radar you could sneek it... tricky one huh..

Here's the map! (http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=107022982945214945773.00048a54c619f2899313d&ll=5.31968,100.405083&spn=0.233137,0.308647&z=12&iwloc=00048a54c8b5541ce8722)

It's very close and patrols the area. I cannot get to the extraction point and evade in time.

Without the depth markings from the original map it is hard to say but I would assume you have at least enough depth to go in at night decks awash, there is almost always 40-45 feet of depth in these insertion missions. Looking at the scale it is 4-6 miles from his current location, if you select a time when he is at the furthest point from you you should be OK. Even in convoy attacks I can usually set within 3000 yrds decks awash with no problems. If you do get spotted it is a quick surface to try and out run it while using your deck gun to hold him off until you can dive and evade.

Like he said, thats your best bet to complete the mission. Just hope you dont get caught. There not likely to see you though.

I tried going decks awash and parallel to the coast and still got detected. The DD patrols the area just below the harbour so on the map it's almost at the farthest point of its patrol. Anyway you put it's risky. And a fight might compromise the insertion. Was there any margin in reality for following an order? Or you just had to do it?

edit: BillBam, for some bathymetry hit Earth in Google maps

Ok, did it! But it was weird...

What happened!? (http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=107022982945214945773.00048a54c619f2899313d&ll=5.31968,100.405083&spn=0.233137,0.308647&z=12)

I waited for the patrolling destroyer to turn the back on me and speeded ahead at periscope depth to the drop point. I got as close to the coast as the depth permitted (wasn't necesary to go into shallow area, so I stayed where it was around 90 ft deep) and turned the boat around then quickly came to a halt and surfaced.

Kicked the agent out in his boat and went to periscope depth and flank ahead because the DD picked me up when surfaced, even if it was pretty far.

DD aproaches to investigate while the agent is rowing for his life :haha: I guess he was pretty motivated at that point. He was lucky because I got pinged and then depth charged while trying to silently evade. Managed to escape with no damage by snapping at flank speed in time.

DD circles around and almost rams me. Still no damage, except some scratched paint. Then the most amazing thing happens! The DD crew remebers the football game is about to start and runs straight ahead for the harbour! And I'm saved. But it was too close...and weird :o

So much for a stealthy insertion of your agent. He was probably picked up by JAP agents and has been spilling his guts about your sub and crew from the 1st moment.

The destroyer did not run away- he was immediately ordered to break off the attack and clear the area IMMEDIATELY by high command who is acting on the firm belief that your boat is very likely to do more good for the IJN if they just leave you to your own devices. :rotfl2::rotfl2:

:yeah:

:har:

and I wouldn't blame him, on account of the way he was "sent off on his mission". Head first, boat later, no time to lose.

I'll bet he was :DL

Congrats on your successful completion of the mission. I was going to say that if you're worried about sinking the DD would draw attention then being detected (which was very likely, and happened) would accomplish the same thing. So I was going to say, "Blast the living snot out of the DD."

"So much for a stealthy insertion of your agent. He was probably picked up by JAP agents and has been spilling his guts about your sub and crew from the 1st moment."

When I first read that I took the spilling guts thing literally; as in the agent was probably tortured.
