We all - well most of us - loved Silent Hunter 3, and it is frequently the title to which Silent Hunter 5 is most often compared.

One of the most enjoyable things about Silent Hunter 3 was using your imagination to come up with the back-story for your crew.

all one has to do is visit the thread about all the stories written - as inspired by in game events - abotu Silent Hunter 3. We didnt know anything about the crewmen... if you wanted them to have a certain personality or history, you created one for them.

However.

In Silent Hunter 5 - the back story of the crew is dictated to you. everyone has the same 1WO, the same chief engineer, the same bosun.

In the SH3 forums there was a feeling of unique individuality.

Whenever i would come in to the SH3 forums i would chiefly visit to hear about the exploiots of my fellow commanders... it truly was like visiting the bar in port. Exchanging stories, contact reports, action reports etc.

with SH5 on the other hand... the individuality is removed, we all have the same experience for the most part. We all have the same crew.

there is not any of this "I stumbled across the King George V under heavy escort and sunk it in grid square yadd yadda"

in the SH5 forum... all you hear about is "what are AMC ships?" - "Where can i find the aircraft carrier in mission one?"

With SH3... we were commanders in the Kriegsmarine. We were sharks. We here at subsim filled the seas with dread.

With SH5... that dynamic is gone. and we are mere players of the same game.

I haven't even played the game, but I can tell SH5 has a much more linear feel to it than its two predecessors. It seems like it has more in common with SH2 than SH3, I guess a consequence of the RPG-storyboard approach?

I used SH3Commander to help make the backstory for my SH3 +GWX crew. Too bad SH3 Commander will be no more (for SH4 or 5) :wah:

the lack of blank characters hasn't stopped anyone from using thier imagination. i have read some great sh5 stories. nobody has to stick to the template and can change names and backgrounds to suit whatever story they can dream up. thats the best part of imagination... imagining things beyond a set notion. :)

I haven't seen many obvious "Adventures of..." up here. :hmmm:

SH5 players, I have some questions to pose to you (no, I'm not gonna bash your game):

1) In SH3 I can sail anywhere I want to, sink as many or as few ships as I want to, and can ignore my assigned patrol area if I so choose. How loose or restrictive is the gameplay in SH5?

2) How would you define SH5? Is it a shooter, an RPG, a simulator, other?

3) How rewarding is the experience of sailing back into port after a successful patrol?

4) Do you miss your crew when they die?

5) How unique is SH5 as a simulation? Is it a breath of fresh air worthy of an old dude's attention?

1) you have set objectives to complete. you can choose whether or not to complete them. you can still sail anywhere you want to and sink whatever. sadly, if you aren't within a missions radius the kill wont count towards the mission. there is no renown award but morale and promotion points for sinking ships. on the plus side, the mission areas are generally very large and give you plenty of room to roam.

2) a simulator in the same sense as sh3 + 4 may be considered one, as it plays pretty much the same.

3) very rewarding. i do miss the send offs of sh3 at times though.

4) they dont die, or if they do die you die with them

5) you dont have to unrealistically teleport anymore. walking or running the inside of the sub is a refreshing change that definitely adds to immersion. its worthy of any old dudes attention and if you dont like it, all you have lost is some time and a few bucks right?

and we are all playing the vanilla sh5 campaign

This.

We don't really have time to talk about stories around here because the huge horde or SH5 bashers. Just in few months I started to hate SH3 only because almost every day must be somebody with huge dials on his hat to come over and start a SH5 hate topic/post .. the never ending "SH3 rulz, SH5 sux" or "I will not buy SH5 until drm is not removed bla-bla". So what we have here is a constant fight with the old guys with dials on their screen and the annoying SH5 bugs. Not much time for anything else.

Regarding the game, I love it even if is in vanilla state and filled with bugs. I play with my UI hidden and only with shortcuts, in this way I feel the sim part.. is like I'm really there. Is something I never felt before in SH when we had to teleport to stations like in Star Trek, so we needed great amount of imagination or smoke pot to believe that we really command a sub.

Yeah, there is a lot of problems in the game, things are moving slow and these amateur nutheads from Ubi dont give a frak about us. But I enjoy it very much and I play as it is, with map contacts on, 80% realism and hoping that some day soon a new patch or mod will solve the many problems we have now. SH5 is a newborn baby and is cute, now we have to teach him to be smart. Returning to SH3 and those ugly huge dials? Nevah!1!

By WE do you mean YOU as well? Or are you still waiting for the development team to start modding (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=1429859&postcount=103).

was not my intent to "leave out" SH4

im speaking strictly in terms of the comparisons made to SH3. ;)

furthermore it was not my intent to "bash" SH5.

im enjoying it for the most part, it was just a simple observation i have made. I think having the terms of the back story dictated to us takes a bit of the fun out of SH5.

I wish to be part of this, but there is no valid tutorial for a complete nab in moding.
