View Full Version : Strange VIIB sinking?

I have seen this posted but mainly with the type VIIA. I never had a problem with my VIIA maintaing depth even at ahead slow.

I just got my VIIB, made my usual run through the English channel. The first dive to avoid warships around dover went fine. The second was mid channel, had to crash dive to avoid a warship that was spotted.

First my Compressed air ran down to 10% in like 1.5 hours (was going ahead slow, silent running). Surfaced for about 2 hours and dove again. This time staying at ahead 1/3 (not running silent). Again compressed air went to 10% and I started sinking. And I was only trying to maintain 35m depth. I also noticed (in external view) my sub has about a 20 deg up incline when submerged.

I have made two runs through the channel in my VIIA and never had a problem.

So is this a bug?? Has anyone else had a problem with the VIIB? And has anyone else noticed your compressed air going down rapidly (this I have NOT seen in any threads talking about the sinking problem).

I just made a post about this problem on my interior mod thread. But, I was wrong, this sounds like a completely different problem. I have never seen or heard of this. Is your sub damaged? Also, could you post a list of the mods you are using, perhaps you have a bad mod conflict.

Thanks for the reply Steel (love you interior mod btw.. not using it yet but looks awesome).

The only mod I have on is the Torpedo Critical Hits mod. The rest is plain vanilla (I have a slew I want to try but I only go one mod at a time to test for issues).

Sub has ZERO damage.

what is your speed?

below a certain speed, subs apparently have a difficulty in maintaining depth.

I was going ahead 1/3 (3 kts). But again the strange thing is my compressed air getting used up, and the fact that my VIIA never had this issue.

I dont buy the fact that even old subs had a hard time maintaining depth. The ballast could be adjusted to keep the sub near or at neutral bouancy. Even US Civil War era subs stayed down for HOURS, and they were PEDAL driven (hence why the confederate sub Hunley probably sank...they stayed down so long they asphixiated). And you can read accounts of US and German WWII subs that stayed under for 12+ hours during depth charge attacks.... you cant tell me they ran at Full or Flank speed while trying to remain silent.

Sure the sub will slowly drift up and down....but again thats why the CE would constantly be shifting ballast.

My conclusion (I will try removing the one mod I have installed) is this is a bug and NOT the way the sim was supposed to run (another bug....Yippie). Just when I was starting to get into SH5.... if this bug isnt fixed I will yet again stop playing SH5 and await mods to fix this.

I would say that it is not a bug, since I have never experienced it or heard about it before. It may be a problem with your installation, however, reinstalling is a pain(I have done it 4 times because of mistakes made while modding).

My advice is to try one of the mods which modifies the subs diving/surfacing/trim characteristics. Either Better More Realistic Flotation, or ddrgn's Historical Specifications mod(be sure to install this at port).

Thanks for the advice all (especially Steel).... I will try disabling my one mod first being as that is the only thing (other than going to a Type VIIB) that has changed.

If I still have the problem I will try one of those mods you mentioned Steel. If that dont fix it, I will re-install.

Hummm...Oscar said in ddrgn's Historic Floatation mod "Try the VIIB. I think its the worst. I had the VIIA first and it didnt have any problems either. "

I want to say that he fixed all the problems with the mod as long as you install in port, but I am not sure. You are more than welcome for the advice, I only wish I had a real solution.

Ok... so I fired up my game when I got home. Dove to 50 m and ahead slow..no sinking, no use of compressed air (other than the 4% or so to dive).

Then I dove to 100m.... no abnormal use of compressed air, but had to maintain ahead half speed (approx 5 kts) or I would sink.

So it appears the compressed air leakage was a one time thing, fixed with a reboot (or bernard was using the air to blow up ballons!). But the sinking is what everyone else is experiencing.

Oh and I left the "Critical hit torpedo" mod on.

When I get back to port (just got 90,000 tons on a un-escorted convoy of 10 ships. Used all torps and all deck gun ammo....WOOT!) I will try ddrgn's mod and see if that fixes it (plus it sounds like it somewhat fixes the sub-on a rail issue).
