View Full Version : How do I fix my framerate?
I am trying to run SH5 at 1920x1200 at a decent 60fps but it has this really annoying micro stutter all the time.
I am running a corei7 at 3.8ghz and a gtx295 on AFR2 as there is no sli profile and SH4 run great on AFR2.
If I turn all the lightrays and clouds off it runs great but surely my setup should have no problem running this game all settings on.
I also have shadows off as I think they look awful and AAx2 only.

Maybe you can use this tool for settings,http://www.guru3d.com/imageview.php?image=8936

What exactly is stuttering, the game itself, or specific animations?
The game itself is stuttering.
It's really annoying.

Huh, that is very weird, I sometimes get a little animation stuttering, but almost never the whole game. Are you sure that you have the latest graphics drivers? And also, I tell everyone who gets choppiness in their animations to decompress the .dds image files that are responsible for those animations. I don't know if that would work for you though since it is the whole game.
Try this anyway:http://www.filefront.com/16892499/Possible%20Choppiness%20Fix.7z
I have simply packaged some essential environmental .dds files that I know help frame rate when decompressed(the ones for light and shadows are included). Simply install this in JSGME after all other mods, fire up a game, and then let me know what your results are.

How do I fix my framerate?
Control Panel > Programs > Select "SH5" > Click "Uninstall"
Sorry, couldn't resist. ;)

I've had the same problem with SH5 from the start. Modded, stock, it's all the same. If I disable 3D clouds it's smooth, but with clouds on it stutters or "hiccups" while panning the view around. I have plenty of computer horsepower (Core i7 920, ATI 4850) that runs Crysis smoothly, but not SH5. I've tried various things to improve the situation, adjusting priority, core affinity, v-sync, detail levels, and windowed mode settings as well as lower resolution, but none of it has worked. I get decent framerates, but the stutters persist.

I am serious, try the fix I posted. If you have more than enough system resources, that means it is the game engine's fault. The only way I get the stuttering to stop for me is to decompress mass generated .dds files.
Thanks, that helped but my main problem seems to be that my GTX295 is only using one card as there is no sli profile for SH5.

I gave it a try but it made no difference. I've never seen a game behave like this, so I'm a bit at a loss. Example: I'm hovering over the open ocean with the external camera. I look up at the light clouds drifting by. I've got a solid 50 fps, all fine and dandy. But if I pan the camera around, or even slide along using the movement keys I'll induce the stutter. Watching the fps counter, the framerate actually appears to jump UP during a stutter. I can see it go up to three digits, then quickly back down to the normal range. :hmmm:

Wow, that is weird. Do you have any mods installed? If so, could you post a list?
Edit: I have a much bigger version of the fix I posted earlier, It is what I actually use to stop all the stuttering in things like deck waves, shadows, explosions, etc. It may stop the full game stuttering, but I am not positive. If anybody wants to try it, I will PM a link to you, but I would ask that you do not distribute it.

Yes, it is very strange. If I turn off 3D clouds it's smooth as butter. Something specifically related to the way the clouds are rendered seems to cause the strange behavior.
As for mods, I've got a pretty good list going.
Ailclouds 3.0
Accurate German flags
ailimpurity light
ailmoon 1.5
ailwhiteinterior
BaRF 1.3
Doom's Decks
Interior working dials
Mighty fine crew
More crew commands by dialog
More realistic periscopes
No crosshair
No bubbles/halos
Remove login intro movie
ailrain
digital clock
stadimeter fix (with clock patch)
Damage assessment
No surface hydrophone
I've also just tried it with stock clouds and the behavior is still there. I'm pretty sure it was there from the beginning before I added any mods at all. Nothing I've done (v-sync, AA on/off, resolution, mods, affinity, priority, etc) has affected the behavior. Fortunately it's not too noticeable from on board the boat, but if I want to look around with the external camera I'm going to notice it alright. :-?

Well, if it is clouds that are causing the problem. Try uninstalling all of Ailantd's environmental mods, and install Env 2.5 just to see if that makes it any better. I posted a fully updated link on the thread for Env, so you will not have to do the multiple install patch deal. I think that link is now on the second to last page of that thread.

Could that be related to the problem.
I didn't see other posters saying they ran SLI or Crossfire. ie; 2 cards.
Just a thought.

Tried that. No difference. At this point I believe it's something to do with the core game engine and my system. Although what exactly I'm not sure. I've read plenty of stuttering complaints on the boards here, but I don't know that they were exactly like what I've been seeing. Maybe I'll re-install for grins and see if that helps. :06:

I have the same problem using an ATI 4850 with a 3.0 Ghz Triple core processor. I did find a solution (kind of) which is to alt tab out of the game and go to task manager. right click sh5.exe and set priority to high, and then set affinity to use only one core. Apparently there is some bad programming when it comes to multi-core implementation with this game. that stops all the stuttering for me...in video. Now my sound is stuttering which for me is just as important than the graphics. So at the moment it's one or the other for me. But maybe your sound won't have a problem with this solution. Let me know if it works for you so I can know if it's a sound problem on my end.
-turning off vsync does seem to help, but then I get stuttering in the control room - switching to use 1 core processor solves that, and sound seems to be stable for the moment...

None of that makes any difference with my quad-core system. Priorty, affinity, graphics settings, none of it matters (except 3D clouds). The game runs smoothly if 3D clouds are off, but stutters when they are on. That makes no sense, since I have plenty of computer muscle to run the game. The only clue I have is the fact that the Ubi system detection tool (runs at installation) reported only 2Gb on my system when it actually has 6Gb installed. Perhaps the game is not using all available memory, I don't know. I've tried a re-install and that did nothing.

yeah that's strange because I can run the 3d clouds without a problem and I have 4 gb of ram, though it only ran silky smooth when I disable the other 2 processor cores. disabling vsync helped as well. It sounds like your problem might be related to the amount of ram recognized?

That's my suspicion, but it could also be a 32-bit/64-bit issue, since I have SH5 (32-bit) running on 64-bit Vista. Did the detection tool report your 4Gb correctly? I started a thread to ask other Kaleuns about that, but haven't seen any responses.

I use windows 7 64 bit and the detection tool did detect the 4gb if I remember right.

Interesting. There seems to be at least one other Kaleun where the detection tool reported less than what was installed:
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=171811
The HW detection tool only recognised 2GB on my W7 ultimate 64bit system but I don't think it only does that overall.
My main problem is that there is no sli profile for SH5 so it doesn't see my second card.
Harmsway!

You might find my injection here out of line. If so just ignore me I don't mind.
So here it goes. I was having similar stuttering with Flight Simulator. Only in FS there are settings for letting FS manage frame rate or setting them to a fixed amount. Strangely enough if you let it run frame rates freely it will stutter even though it should allocate memory better this way. However if you find you can get ~ 60 FPS and set it to a fixed amount lower then that like 40 FPS then Flight Sim would run smooth with no stuttering. Now how to apply this to SH5 I don't know.

Hey guys, I dug this thread back up to report that my stuttering is fixed! If anyone else is having "mouse lag" or other stuttering (decent framerates with stutters or "hiccups" while panning with the mouse), you might want to take a look at this thread:
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=172474
Specifically, Seeadler's post:
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=1449406&postcount=9
It worked for me, SH5 is finally smooth! :yeah:
