TMO 2.0 100 realism

So started a new career since a DD in Yellow Sea got lucky and nailed me with perfect pattern of charges.I was assigned the Balao class USS Parche out of Pearl Harbor in June 1944, first patrol is going well off Hokkaido and Northern Honshu with one minelayer, one Japanese submarine and an Akita Maru sank via torpedos. Two 1000 ton tug boats sank via gunfire of 5 inch deck gun and 40 MM AA guns(work well on smaller surface ships!)

Anyway, I like to know the history behind my boat and not every boat is known as well as Tang, Wahoo, Barb, so did a search on USS Parche, had no idea Parche was such a top notch boat and was skippered by Lawson P. Ramage.Ramage won the Medal of Honor on her second patrol for a daring night surface attack on a convoy off Formosa.Cool to find things like this out.Parche also made one of the longest patrols of the war from September-December 1944.

So I figured maybe some of others on here would like to share history of their subs.:arrgh!:

One of the first things I do after getting a new command is to go look up the boat's history. I like to know about the real life counterpart to the boat I'm sailing.

I used to look up the real life background of my boats, until i fell in love with the USS Tarpon. Now i will keep restarting the campaign until i get the Tarpon.

The USS Tarpon SS-175 was a Porpoise/Shark Class Submarine based in Manila when the War started. She was built in 1936 and She completed 11 war patrols and was awarded seven battle stars during WWII. She sank the German raider Michel while patrolling the approaches to Yokohama.

On Christmas 1944 she was ordered back to New London and then she served along the eastern coast of the US until she was decommissioned in November 1945.

In 1947 she was returned to service as a naval reserve training ship until September of 1956 when she was finally taken out of service and sold for scrap.

On August 26 1957 the USS Tarpon was under tow to the scrap yard when she broke loose and sunk off Cape Hatteras N. Carolina. Today she is a popular dive site and time has taken its toll.

yep tarpon is pretty cool.I actually have the German aux cruiser meant to the michel sailing around in TMO 2.0, its on the German roster of ships left over from Ducimus's Holy Loch Flotilla he had in TMO a long time ago.I inserted it via the ME and spotted her once leaving Tokyo Bay but was unable to attack due to heavy aircover(I had two AR-196
s attached to her, also the IJN air cover near Tokyo)I surfaced after dark and made flank speed run to catch her but never found her. Plan to play in the time frame again and will hopefully get to sink her.

My gato class boat is the USS Bluefish, the only sub to sink a Japanese sub in the war.

For WarlordATF: You do not have to reload until you get the USS Tarpon, there is an easier way to get the boat you want. Open the file Data\ American\Submarine\SSPorpoise.cfg in a text editor and delete all the other subs. Change the Tarpon to Unit 1 and you will always start with it . When I upgrade from the USS Pike, Salmon or Seadragon I always get the only Gato on my list, the USS Bluefish.

See the patrol reports of your sub: http://hnsa.org/doc/subreports.htm The actual declassified reports. Makes interesting reading for sure.

Fish- Thanks for that post link..as a newbie to subsimming and a history buff, this makes terrific reading and research.

Very nice link.. so my boat earned 7 stars although the report sounds everything but successful. I wonder how that fits..

Not a bad idea, I'm mid-campaign right now and i try to avoid any tweaking, but when i finish i'll look into the files again. Another reason the Tarpon won me over was as a child when we first moved to Florida my Great-Grand Parents lived on Tarpon Street. At the end of the road was a Fishing Pier and my Great-Granddad taught me to fish there. They are both gone now but i'll always have the great memories!

MY grandfather took me on fishing trips to the Chesapeake Bay and at the mouth of the Susquehanna river for Blues.

I should have stuck to the Searaven and will do so in the future.. this log is such a nice read!

0402 Surfaced and proceeded on course. Made morning dive with CAPE MANDAR abeam to port distant 14 miles. On surfacing after sunset, found bridge and topside sprinkled with fish (looked something like Spanish Mackeral). Collected two bucketsful and had them for dinner next day.

Way to go, Searaven! :arrgh!: Who needs fishing rods when you got a submarine to do the hard work for you.

LOL!

i always wondered if they ever picked up marine life while submerged. Imagine poping the hatch to find a nice sized shark or octopus on the bridge! :har:
