Today we celebrate 19 years since Slovenia declared her independence
on 25 june, 1991, the Slovenian nation made the decision to seperate from Yugoslavia public. The territorial defence faced the Yugoslavian national army, politicians and diplomats a world determined to have Yugoslavia in one peace but after a 10 day war Belgrade was forced to withdraw it's army, due to determination of the nation and the territorial defence, Croatians declaring their independence and the world public becoming sympathetic to the new small democracy. Slovenia was here to stay.
19 years later, Slovenia is a modern information age country sadly suffering from corrupt and incompetent politicians, influent division on left and right ideologies, 10% unemployment rate and severe indefference of her citizens when it comes to matters of the state. But as our first president said on the ceremony of declaration and raising of the flag in Ljubljana:
''Today we are allowed to dream, tommorov is a new day'' - Milan Kučan

I still remember those days, and the relief felt that for this - first - time a war was avoided. Felix Slovenia! Those former Yugoslavian provinces following you unfortuantely were not so lucky.
However, congrats.
