Ahoy Kaleun's, I've just sailed into Scapa flow on the surface and heard a loud grating noise as, presumably, I went over a sub net. But when I had a look under the boat with the free cam view, there was no sign of one. I'm playing the vanilla version so is this normal? Anyway, I'm in and there's a fiji light cruiser at anchor 5km off my port bow. I'm at 13meters looking out for mines through the observation scope. It will be mine, oh yes.... It will be mine. (No pun intended) Sven.:arrgh!:

When was your visit under the war 1940 or later?

Oops, I was going to post what I knew on Scapa. Then remembered I only went there on SHII :D.

My motto, stay out of shallow water.

Brag, you got it right!

Made it in to Scapa plenty times, sunk ships plenty times but never lived to tell the tale (in the drinking establishments of Kiel anyway!)

My first attempt was the one I remember most, I sank an Illustrious, I think, it would have been on vanilla in those days, before RuB. The harbour woke up and I had destroyers all over me. I thought I'd be cunning and hide next to the wreck of the aircraft carrier to confuse their sonar.

I was even planning how I was going to attack the 2 auxillary cruisers after the chaos calmed down when I realised...explosively...that SHIII doesn't actually let you use wrecks to hide behind. :dead:

There are anti sub nets, and tethered mines on the southern and western approaches to Scapa Flow respectively, in stock SH3

The safest way into Scapa is the eastern entrance where you have to navigate around the sunk ships. That's also the one that Prien took. All other entrances are heavily guarded in SH3/GWX/NYGM/WAC.

That's correct....you can get through the gap in the middle of the channel.

Not in stock mel....there is no eastern entrance.

Thanks for the replies guys. Vendor, the date is September 1943. It was disapointing, went in on the surface, got bombed by liberators, went to PD with 62% hull integrity and there was only 1 ship there, and he moved when I he saw the wake off my torp. Thats another thing, a ship that weighs over 10000 tons goes from 0 to 15 knots in about 2 seconds! Hmmmm.:hmmm:

Here is a view of Scapa in GWX3.0 (I've deleted the vast majority of ships in the harbour.

I know what you mean. I had this experience as well. That's totally unrealistic but it's a limitation of the game engine

I'll second that.

try thompsons ships (if thats the right one) , it kind of fixes ships speeding up and stopping straight away.

I agree all though there is a net there later on so best to go at dark in bad weather. Thats the path I always take.

In fairness any attempt to get into Scapa after mid-1940 is mighty dangerous. The only times I tried it (a very long time ago) was in 1939 and early 1940. In one attempt in 1941 I got sunk approximately 40Km from the base.

Yes, avoid shallow water if it can be helped. been there once (late 41/gwx), never again. however looking at the western approach into Scapa... how did i miss both of those mine fields? my approace in should have sent me into both.
