Japaneese citizens are chided to go to bed one hour early to cut Co2 emissions.

Huh... my emissions tend to go up when I sleep :haha:

Japanese households are being urged to go to bed one hour earlier than normal in order to help tackle climate change.

Makes perfect sense though if you think of it in terms of electricity consumption.

Brilliant.

The change between normal and summer time also was introduced to save energy, after the oil shock of the early 70s. But that turned out to be a myth that did not work. We know today that switching to summertime during summer does not change general energy consummation of a nation.

Something tells me that this sleep invitation in japan also will not have the wanted result. Maybe because people who go to bed early, tend to raise earlier, too.

Most Americans would simply ignore such a thing. There's only one effective way to get people to cut energy usage, and that is to raise the rates. Unfortunately, as with so many policies, that too would have unintended side-effects. If rates rise above the prevailing market cost you will have a shortage of energy in no time as enrgy is exported, or plants get mothballed and mines get closed to save on costs. The market is the only thing that can effectively govern such policy, as a drop or rise in rates is always preceded and accompanied by other factors, such as plants or mines being opened or energy being imported/exported.

Take note all politicians that want to say they are really DOING someting for the environment!

That one's an absolute gem :rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

I say the brits can go one better than the japs. We'll all go to bed as soon as we get home from work and sell our bed time to other nations that want to go to bed later.

I wish there was a way to meter each individual outlet in the house. That would be one way to bring parasitic electricity usage to people's attention.

The fact that my electricity bill is, say, $200.00 per month does not really mean much, but if I knew that my TVs/Cableboxs/DVRs are using, say, $30.00 even when I don't use it, that will bring things to mind.

What is killing our electricity use is all the stuff that draws electricity even when it is not being used! I know it is a problem in our house.

5 computers
7 monitors
2 printers
1 scanner
Router/switches/hubs out the butt

all powered up for the 10 hours we are all at work. How much electricity am I wasting? Dunno, probably don't really care. How much is this wasted electricity costing me, that I would care about!

And please don't even ask about our stupid "home theater" system $$$$$$$ :damn:

(actually we do care and we are trying to remember to really power down stuff, we are just not doing very well on it)

Parasitic electricity useage ??? What in the hell ???

Anyhow you may very well get your wish or close to it. Thats what smart grid is all about. Being 'monitored' as to your energy usage. I guess if you use to much the goverment comes and turns off the lights. :haha:

200 dollars...? :o

Usually, the more water or electricity of quantities of somethign you buy/consume, the cheaper a price per item you get (rabate). That way, those consuming much, get rewarded. It should be different. the more you consume, the more expensive per item/quantity the price becomes.

Like with health insurrance, in principle. If ypou stay healthy, you get punished: your money is taken away, but you get no comkensation. But when you become ill, then you get a return, in drugs, treatements, services. The system motivates you to become ill.

I like how they did in ancient China. His royal emperor'S majesty had personal doctors, who got rewarded and well payed as long as his majesty stayed healthy. When his majesty became ill, the doctors lost their job and income - or their head, whatever was considered to be more precious.

and the resulting worse effect on climate change in the long run :D

If there was no economy there would not be global warming either. So recession is good!

Stop spending. Government should take a long vacation too.:haha:

When I was a kid I thought people were smart to have thought about everything. I thought they thought about how to mitigate the emission coming out from the cars that they produced and pretty much everything else was worked out as well.

10 years forward I found out that they did not and could not care less :rotfl2:

People, use multi-plug connectors with additonal switches to make sure your equipment, TV, settop box etc is not running idle in standbye. I use these switches exclusively, and switch on and off computer stuff, TV stuff, HiFi stuff by such switches. Else modem, Tv boxes and some other equipment would consume close to 100 Watts even when being switched of. The technical specifications set by the manufacturers are so totally hilarious. A cable receiver consuming 35 Watt when running - and 35 Watt when being switched off? A Microwave cinsuming 10 Watts for justing sitting dark in the nightly kitchen? HiFi receiver consuming 12 Watt in "off"...?

Yea that would save Wattage. I use them too.

Here is an experiment everyone can do.

Go through your house and turn everything "off", then go look at your electricity meter. :ping::o:stare::oops:

It may surprise you. It sure surprised me!

Those switches are the only way to go! :yeah:

If it comes with a remote, it never turns off. :yep:

I wish there was a way I could program a switch to automatically turn off all of our computers/TVs/DVR/ and crap like that, and then automatically power them up 30 minutes before we get home.

That way we would have the instant access we like, but still are not throwing money away during the day.

Yeah, it was freaking surprising alright! I switched off the master breaker, went to check the electiricity meter, and (surprise) it didn't budge! The only surprising thing is that now I have to reset all my clocks because of you, ya' bastid:stare::DL

That's a mean joke. I thought I was gonna learn something cool:cry:

It's like picking up litter. If everyone does it a little, it makes a difference. The problem with people, American or anyone, is we feel too small to make a difference...not so.

Almost funny story from one of my environmental management classes.

Our instructor once said that if every person in the US, picked up one piece of trash, every day and disposed of it.....we would totally overload the refuse system causing widespread consequences.

She was a pretty cool instructor.
