View Full Version : TC and sudden damage to your uboat.

Aight, so i use TC.. quite alot.. i imagine we all do.

Last night while using TC, i was suddenly informed that my boat was taking damage and
all my crew on the bridge was wounded (both the crew on watch and the 2 crews off watch), so i initiate repairs, looked for anything that might have attacked me, scrathced my
head and continued my voyage.

Sometime later, im at periscope depth (cannot recall if the periscope was up or down), and have been for several hours during daytime,
and using TC again.. when suddenly im informed that my boat is taking damage and all my crews (both on and off watch) in the engine room department are wounded. I again initiate repairs, surface and look for anything that might have attacked me. again nothing.

question:
1. why are both crew on and off watch wounded, shouldnt those off watch generally stay out of their work stations ? (be it engine room or bridge)

2. has anyone confirmed if theres an actuall attack by something (plane or ship) when one gets damaged when using TC or if its a "screw up" in the game itself?

any and all help appriciated.

You don't say what mods you are running, this could make a difference. However in generally running at pericsope depth in TC is not a good idea since airplanes can spot you above 100'. I believe this is more likely in TMO and RFB than stock. Mines can also be a problem.

darnit.. i always forget to add the mods im using :

RFB_2.0
RFB_2.0_patch_23April2010
RSRDC_RFB_V575
RSRDC_V5xx_Patch1
Spaxs SH4 Uboat SPEECH FIX_V8

so, unless a mod is "broken", damage taken while using TC is from planes, ships or mines ? and theres no possible way to figure out which one did the damage once you are out of TC ?

ps: and yes.. having the periscope up while using TC is a really really bad idea. completly agree, but i couldnt remember if did take it down or not.. i sometimes forget.

More than likely an airplane got you.

Try to run with the periscope up and air search radar antenna extended if you travel around submerged at TC. If you make it a habit to run at PD without those, you are in for more nasty surprises.
I also try to avoid running at more than TC256, at least during the day early war.

I had this happen because I failed to zoom when plotting a course and ran smack into a tiny island along the path.

It can happen when submerged and you run aground in shallow water.

You could have run aground but I'd bet it was aircraft. I use TMO so it might be a bit different.
I use a high TC to get across the Pacific but once in enemy territory I'm a bit more careful about using it, for example;

If my air search radar gives me a contact but the aircraft hasn't been spotted I won't use more than 64 TC because at 64 or less your crew will give you an "aircraft spotted" warning but higher than 64 they won't and you'll get attacked without any warning and it'll be too late as everything happens much too fast and you're basically toast.

At periscope depth TMO aircraft can still "see" you so same applies as above.

As mentioned though, check your chart (zoom right in) as sometimes there's little atolls or something shallow that you don't see.

1. No, as far as the game is concerned they are in whatever 'compartment' the crew management screen shows them in. Even submerged, the deckgun crew is still on the deck (even though they don't show when submerged) That is why some mods created crew compartments to put them in when submerged, for example "Hogan's Alley". So if the engine compartment shows all three watches, as far as the game is concerned all three are in the engine room. And the bridge crew is still on the bridge and the guns crew are still at their guns.
2. Like the others have said it is most likely a plane. Your sonar "usually" picks up a ship and drops you out of TC. But a plane is not detected and while the bomb is dropping the plane is still flying away at "high TC". So by the time you get the damage, drop out of TC, check the crew, surface the boat, the plane is long gone. The next time you get attacked on the surface, time how long it is until the plane is out of sight. It isn't very long. A lot less time than it takes to surface and look for him. How many times have you been on the surface, alerted that a plane is coming, know the direction it is coming from and still can't see it?
It can also be the other things mentioned, but if you zoom in on the map, you should be able to determine if it was an atoll or island.

Peabody touches on a good point regarding being able to see an aircraft. It is an annoying limitation of the game that aircraft seem to become visible only when they are disturbingly close to your boat. Seeing them at a long distance is only accomplished by your eagle-eyed crew!

I'm not sure if it's my imagination but it seems better in TMO than stock.

RSRD overwrites TMO air traffic and lowers the settings some, so you don't have the mean TMO planes bombing you at depths. Only a few planes carry the deeper charges, but they can get you and be long gone before you get TC down.

Shore guns are another killer using TC, so be careful around ports and straits.

For certain, you were attacked, hit ground, ect, not some glitch. Why I always leave the radar up when I dived patrolling, so I can see the planes coming and TC will drop when they reach the zone.

My advice is try not to go above 1000x TC. It's fast enough to get around and causes little problems. Even the 512x is good:rock:

ah. thnx for the answers lads, appriciate it.

now then i see that many of you talk about lowering the TC, which is all well and good, and id do it if i thought it prudent, but running all the way from singapore to cape town
on x1000 or even 512 as admiral8q is talking about, is simply not possible for me.
it takes too long .

if i was still single and had the entire evening for myself with a good book, then yes maybe id do that, but being a family man and all, my gaming time is somewhat limited

It may take 15-20 minutes of real time. Patience is a virtue when you're a submariner. :03: Try 1500 if you get impatient.

but i am a patient man, my 3 year old son is not...and neither is my pregnant girlfriend :o
as it is now, SH IV is the only game on my harddrive, it takes all the gaming time i have.
using even more time on movement from A to B is something ill try when i have the time to spare

Let me re-quote then Nappy:03:

Patience is a difficult virtue when you're a father and a husband with a pregnant wife.
