Definitely not a must-see event unless you happen to enjoy those twisty darn things. The 10-o'clock news here has been extended tonight with the weather livecast reports of funnels on the ground. It's all happening several counties away, but it still leaves me feeling a little bit queasy. They're showing a hook right now that is situated northwest of Ft. Dodge (2 miles out). Crossing my fingers for central Iowa tonight.

I do not like this time of year. :stare:

Shouldn't you be in your storm cellar? That's pretty close.

I hear that.

several years ago we had a big one stretch down out of the cloud base with no warning... it was a serious code brown moment.

it stretched down to the ground for about 5 seconds and sucked back up into the cloud and vanished like it never happened.

it hit a gas station... not a scratch on the whole building except for one pump had been moved to the middle of the street, upright, with the hoses and handles still neatly stowed on the pump levers.

:o damndest thing

I'm a few counties away from there. We usually don't see that activity here in the Metro, except for last year when one touched down about 12 miles north of town.

I'm not a natural-born native of the area, so this time of year is (as GR put it) a code brown for me. :haha:

When we visited some friends in OKC a few years ago we had very severe looking weather our first day. Very exciting  *ahem* And the other year we had a tornado put down (very quickly I believe) just a few blocks away from our house, but of course I had no idea at the time and missed it :nope: (Keep hoping I'll see one of the darned things... some day....)

That said, best of luck to you poor suckers stuck in tornado alley!

So you're not going to stand on your roof and take home video for us?

One thing I do like about this time of year is the energetic storms we get. The tornado watches tend to cost me some sleep if they come in late enough at night (and if the storm is passing close enough to where I live). But if we're safe from that threat I like to crack a window open, turn out the lights, and listen to the thunder peal away across the plains. Awesome.

That tornado that hit us in 86, it was amazing how many people were on their roofs, taping the tornado!:o

I will say, I do like the lightning storms though (at night):o

I dare say Reed Timmer is already chasing them. :haha: One day I will do the same I hope, but damn I feel sorry for the people who are in the firing line.

We're probably going to get storms on the weekend, considering it's been knocking thirty celsius today, they will probably be impressive.

I remember my time in Nebraska. We had these microbursts which came and hit with no warnings. Very scary. :yep:

Reed Timmer has adrenaline in his eyes. He's just crazy enough to do it and still be a normal guy. :DL

That's where there is a sudden, powerful downflow of air?

We actually have these small tornados called trombis here too. Could be a climate change related.

I watched that video Nikimcbee posted, I think I saw him being interviewed.

I believe so.

A microburst is a very localized column of sinking air, producing damaging divergent and straight-line winds (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straight-line_winds) at the surface that are similar to but distinguishable from tornadoes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tornado) which generally have convergent damage. There are two types of microbursts: wet microbursts and dry microbursts. They go through three stages in their life cycle: the downburst, outburst, and cushion stages. The scale and suddenness of a microburst makes it a great danger to aircraft due to the low-level wind shear (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wind_shear) caused by its gust front (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gust_front), with several fatal crashes having been attributed to the phenomenon over the past several decades.

Might be. Looked around Wiki for it and didn't find anything. I'll have a look around the web searches later on.

krashkart,

you don't have to Google everything, give the coffee pot a rest already. :03:

I'll take a shaker over a twister anytime.

I've heard a twister can make a U turn just when you think your safe.

Yeah but an earthquake doesn't need to make a U turn. ;)
