Was there a set number of patrols for a sub captain (or crew?) to complete, after which he would be sent to other duties? Something akin to the 25 missions for B-17 crews?

Four patrols was the normal limit, however on occassion a fifth "Graduation" patrol was allowed such in the case of Cpt. Fluckey of the Barb.

Early in the war there was no limit really, read about some skippers making 6+ patrols in command of same sub but mid war the shrinks got together and influenced the brass enough to say after four patrols a skipper gets a break due to the stress. For some this was a good thing but for many like Fluckey who thrived on the stress and were okay, it was a stupid policy.Should have taken it on a case by case basis but things get fouled up when people listen to shrinks. Fluckey managed to get a 5th patrol after some time stateside while Barb was being overhauled in 1945.
