Just a bit about myself, i'm retired and live in the UK and have been a Flight Simmer for many years and have enjoyed Ship Sim 08 so i'm not new to the sea!!:)
Cheers,
Roger.

Welcome aboard! We are all mad down here!
said the Cat: "we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad."
"How do you know I'm mad?" said Alice.
"You must be," said the Cat, "or you wouldn't have come here." :know:

Welcome aboard! SH3 is a fantastic game and simulation. You will find you absorb tons of information about WWII submarine combat, and probably find yourself buying books on the subject.
The game is highly compelling and customizable.

Welcome Roger,
You will get settled in in no time at all,and when your game arrives you can kiss goodbye to your previous life! :03:
And before long you will be asking "what are the latest mods, what are the latest expansions,or add-ons?" ,and we will say "take your pick mate, there is thousands to pick from!" , but first be sure to get GWX3 (Grey Wolves Expansion) as soon as you have had a test drive with the default game,it is the way forward my friend.
Have fun!

Welcome :salute: Take some time to look around and find out about the various mods and tools people are using. As a fairly new player myself, I'm still adding mods to my collection and have thought that a good mod-list would have been a very useful thing when I was first starting out.
I'll post what I am using when I get a chance :yeah:

Welcome!.
I'm in the same u-boat as you , I started just over a week ago.
I cant believe I missed this one , considering how old it is now.
It's a great sim , really immersive, although be warned - time will fly when your'e out at sea stalking those merchants.
I am using GWX 3.0 , SH commander 3.2 , lifeboats mod , and water/smoke mod with 16km atmosphere enabled . I thknk that's a good base to start off from.
(I would use the merchant fleet mod , but it crashes on me )
Heres one tip for you - When leaving port for the first time , zoom RIGHT IN on the port before plotting a course, as when you are zoomed out it will not show the port layout.
On my first mission I went ahead and plotted my course and promptly smashed my sub into the harbour wall ....:yep:
Anyway , good hunting!

Me, I always drive out of port under "manual" :know: It's the "right" thing to do, and it lets you take in the atmosphere, the sea air, the marching band... Ah, to be young and in charge of a Uboat!

Give Torpedo Damage Final a go also to your mod base,it improves the damage effects caused by your torpedoes, adding to immersion. It removes the default black 'mark' and replaces it with a huge gaping hole in the hull complete with smoldering metal around the edges
It is a very popular mod and one that would be recommended as an addition to the 'base' mods'
Below is an image of the mod in action, which I am sure you will agree looks amazing compared to the default effects! -

Welcome.. I have had SH3 since day 1 and and enjoy it more these days than I did on release..
As many others have said GWX 3.0 is an awesome mod could never play vanilla game again.:ping:
GWX makes them destroyers as stuborn as a pissed of Japanese girl (i know expieriance...in both:oops:)
I am trying to evade one now (destroyer before you ask)that wont leave me alone (laptop for forums/msn) even though it cant hit the broardside of a bus at point blank range.. NOT THAT I AM COMPLAINING :D
Goodluck on your patrols
Dont forget to write
Be sure yo wear your mittens:arrgh!:
Hey Roger,
I'm new too, about a week of SH3 so far! I was never interested in u-boats or naval warfare until watching Das Boot, and then promptly got SH3. GWX is great :) ; there are other supermods too, I'll get to them in time but I figured that starting off with the most popular one would be best.
The only other 'essential' mods I have found to be are GUI mods (mostly if you're using manual targeting) - I like ACM-GUI Reloaded - h.sie's edition - and the 'no continuous 'ship spotted'' mod which I find to be very helpful.
Already I've started reading all I can find on my bookshelves about U-boats, and I've ordered three books :)
Happy hunting :)

Be sure to include this in your U-Boat library,it is a definitive account of practically everything there is to know about U-Boat warfare & the tactics involved, compiled entirely from the captains own first hand experiences.
It is not a novel,it is a technical manual and really does help you implement some of the tactics into your game improving your overall prowess and attacking efficiency quite dramatically.

Order now while you can, this is a rare find and probably won't be in stock much longer!.

I was reading some of that online actually, when someone linked to it in a thread: http://www.hnsa.org/doc/uboat/index.htm
I assume they're one and the same. It seems especially relevant for SH3 play :). I skimmed quite a bit of it when I was first starting SH3. Since it's online and relatively short (120 pages) I'll stick to the three books I've ordered, for the moment. Those were: Das Boot (of course) - by Wolfgang Petersen, Iron Coffins: A Personal Account Of The German U-Boat Battles Of World War II - by Herbert Werner, and U-Boat Ace: The Story Of Wolfgang Luth - by Jordan Vause. I hope they were good choices :) reviews were good at least.

Iron coffins sounds interesting..

I can def recommend the Vause book, he also wrote another called Wolf: U-Boat Commanders In WWII that is very good.

zxc23,
Iron Coffins (which i've had now for about 4 years or so) is a good book no doubt about that, but it is important to note that it is more centred on Werner's personal stories and experiences in the war rather than containing much tehnical material (if that is what you are after, however there are a few tehnical drawings at the front of the book),and there has even been debate as to the accuracy of some of the author's experiences, maybe some of them were elaborated to thrill the reader more, but still a great read! and a sad one at times.

The stories are just as good I agree :yep:
Iron Coffins is still a winner and a popular choice for U-Boat enthusiasts.

Hi All,
Thanks to you all for all your advice,
Sim arrived, i installed and had a quick look [like you do] then installed GWX3 from Grey Wolves and obviously only noticed a few things at once but i am really impressed with what i have seen and reading their site they have done a fantastic job to the sim and all credit to them,
I have already emptied a black cartridge of ink on my printer and will be doing quite a bit of reading before playing the sim again so i can at least get my head around some of it to play it as real as possible,
I have found in this short time just how much work is/was involved running a sub, this may sound silly but having seen lots of films, real and like Das Boot over the years its not until now its something i have thought about, i can see now what folks say about saying goodbye to my wife! :haha: although she is used to it as i have spent ten years or more flying my airliners!! [virtually],
Anyway enough of my waffling! back to my reading,
Cheers,
Roger.

If you have not gotten it already, there is an alternate version of the GWX manual at Jimbuna's Filefront page that does not have the background image on all the pages. That is the one you want to print out, trust me, it will take you far less time and ink.
I went through about three sets of black & tricolor cartridges and wasn't even halfway through printing the version that comes with the install, before I knew the other version existed.

600 pages or so is tiring to read,so I guess referring to certain sections as and when the time arises would be the best bet in trying to absorb that mammoth!

Yeah. :yep:
I've been asked more than once if I've read all the reference works I have in my collection. My answer is always the same: "No. I refer to them constantly, but I've never had a desire to read even one. That's why they're 'reference' books.
