After putting SH5 back on the shelf 5 or six times I at last took it to check out.

I've played around with it for a couple of hours and now have the exact same feeling I get when I'm not carefull of where I step while at the dog park.

:nope:

To be positive I have not had a single glitch...the game plays flawlessly so far. Being able to travel about and interact with the crew is cool.

Still I can't shake the impression that I'm back to playing SH2 on a console system.

Are you playing stock? Coz if so, that's the feeling of poo between your toes you're feeling. Head to the Mod Workshop and try out some of the entirely game changing mods that are out.

Problem is I'm not sure the rewards will be worth the effort even if I do that. I don't get a feel that there is a lot of gameplay depth here no matter how one dresses it up.

Looks to me that most of the effort went into making this release akin to an X-Box style game....and those time limits ...:nope:

I will say though that the ability to suspend recognition of normal shipping near port is a stroke of genius. Wonder if anyone could do do something similar for SH3? :yep:

I hear what you are saying , but everyone is playing with a stock SH5 campaign until people get together and do a campaign mod . TheDarkWraiths Ui mod and u-boat killer ai mod and a few others make the game playable . It only will get better .

After a week or so trying HARD to like the game, I shelved it yesterday. The state it's been released in is honestly shameful, and confirms Ubisoft on par with Activision as the worst gaming publisher around in my personal list (have to admit that the stupidly new-age E3 conference with very little real gaming and a lot of gimmicks contributed a lot).

I've spent three full days of complete and emarassing frustration combing the mediterranean for task forces that simply weren't there, or at least gave me no signal of their existance, bored to death by finding an endless supply of useless dido and kent cruisers.
The game plays nicely mostly, and some features are good, but the campaign doesn't feel dynamic at all. It lacks any kind of variety, with absolutely no neutral shipping around. Hell, i'm at war with france and russia, and there's a campaign to stop resupply of russian ports, but there's absolutely no french and russian ships, not even in french and russian ports.
Way to release an incomplete game.

I'll probably come back to the game in six months or so, hoping that the modders won't lose their enthusiasm like I did, and will make something akin to GWX. But at the moment the fun just isn't there.

The game plays, but the mods make it much more bearable.

Based on everything I've read so far (as someone who hasn't purchased the game yet, but is a longtime SH3/SH4 player), I think I'm mainly waiting for some major campaign rewrite mods before I buy SH5. It sounds like most of the other annoyances have been dealt with, or are in the works. But I don't think I could enjoy the current campaign structure. Suspension of disbelief only goes so far. I want to hunt for Allied shipping, not be assigned unrealistic attacks on warships. If anything cries "console game!", in spite of all the other good things in the game, it's that.

Are any modders working on campaign rewrites now, or are they still waiting to hear some final word from Ubi about a final patch?

That sums it up pretty darn well.

I might try it again simply to engage more in the crew interaction aspect. If only this part could have been melded into SH3 gameplay then UBIsoft would have a real winner.

Unfortunately even the crew interaction is very limited and repeatitive. More often than not is an annoyance you try to get rid of as soon as possible in order to get to the "serious business" (that isn't there anyway)

Someone's really still expecting a final patch from ubisoft? I thought it was completely clear that they moved on from Silent Hunter 5. A colleague of mine actually asked about it to a couple Ubi representatives at E3. One said that he knew nothing about further improvements, the other didn't know that the game existed. I'm not kidding you.
