I think someone's sub-driver is getting sloppy out there. What caught my attention was the article speculation about the sub blowing ballast as evidenced from the bubbles that came to the surface. I found it unlikely that the sub driver would blow ballast while running away from the fisherman. Subs don't blow ballast when on defense. More likely: the bubbles were cavitation from the sub speeding away.

So close. Unlucky man.

In other news, you're right, never leave the scope up for more than a few seconds. Six tops IIRC. That skipper was lucky that that fisher wasn't an enemy patrol boat.

Not high odds on it being an Ivan boat, but I guess it's possible.

Was there a nudist beach nearby? :hmmm:

Most likely it was drug runners. They've been known to use subs to transport illegal drugs into the US via Floridian waters.

But those are semi-submersible craft not true submarines. A lot of the time they are just gofast boats with a waterproof top. Doubtful it would have a periscope.

Money plus ingenuity is a scary thing :shifty:

Probably a North Korean sub trying to pump a few incendiary torpedoes into a few cargo ships...

What is the operation range of North Korea's best sub?

My money is on

A. American Sub

B. Chinese Sub

C. Drug smuggling Semi Submersible of some kind.

Well their longest range sub is the Romeo class with a range of 14,000 nm (according to combat fleets of the world- Wikipedia list 9,000 nm as its range). Sufficient for the trip.

Their Sang O class boats have a range of 1,500 miles which are their longest range indigenous small subs.

However their is another way too, look at this photo:
http://img248.imageshack.us/img248/5906/p4stbdbow.jpg
This is a captured North Korean 'P-4' class small submarine. Notice her bow? That eye bolt like thing? Its likely that is for towing the sub long distances using a trawler or freighter. A North Korea cargo ship could tow her to the US West coast and release her once its in range then pick her up later.

We should make a subsim knock off of the Sang-O.

How hard can it be?

I'm with you on that one! We can build it at my house, on Lake Ontario we only have to worry about the Canadian Navy spying on us. There is a 60 meter long pier and several waterfront buildings about five miles away that are totally disused. That could be our base of operations. :arrgh!:

Seriously! Look how primitive the Sang O is:

we could build that!

I live maybe 10 miles north of Hollywood, FL, and I've been fishing in that area, and farther offshore, on and off for quite some time.

I find the idea of a submerged submarine in that area a bit hard to believe, and the idea that he was doing anything resembling 20kn nearly impossible. Ive never seen the navigation charts of the area, but my rough knowledge is that the seafloor off the southeast Florida coast is VERY gently sloped. between 3-5nm offshore, I don't think there's many (If any) places where its more than 100-200ft deep.

In water that shallow, I don't see a USN nuke doing more than a few knots, and I seriously doubt anyone else would risk being that close to shore, seeing how there's nothing militarily important to look at, and you're well within US territorial waters. (Lots of NON-military things to look at, though, Particularly if you've got a good magnification factor in your optics... :yeah:)

Either the observer has terrible recollection skills, is lying through his teeth, mistook what he saw, or the North Koreans are coming. :arrgh!:

We'll probably never know, though; If it was a USN vessel, they'll never admit it, and if it wasn't, they'll also never admit it.

Florida, frack, forget North Korea its was probably Cuban! Maybe one of their new Delfin class midget subs:

I'd believe a Cuban sub, particularly a minisub. However, it leaves the big question of, WHY.

Cuba can get any intel about this area it needs from any of the several million Cubans living in the area. (Not saying that 99.9% of the local ex-Cubans would do that, just saying that I find it hard to believe the Cuban government doesn't have anyone on the ground here. Ditto to Venezuala or any of the other banana peoples republics)

And if it were just a training mission, precision navigation, or the like, why get so close to shore, and risk an international incident?
