Hi,

was on a patrol last night, just west of the english channel , had just sunk a freighter and was moving northwards when the shout went up that a merchant had been spotted by the bridge.

I go up and sure enough she is sitting dead ahead of me at quite long range , so I increase the speed and attempt to catch up.

just as I am in range and about to fire the deck gun, another shout goes up for a warship spotted, to my dismay I see a british torpedo boat closing in at around 3000m , I immdiately give the signal to dive to 60m , but just as I am going under she gets a few shots on me and I take some damage.

I then start to go down, further and further , past 60m , until I hit the bottom at 120m .

I check the damage screen and it said "minor damage to bow quarters" , "damage to Aft battery". I give the order to go to 60m but the boat does not move.

In the end the only way to surface was to blow ballast , I then got ripped to pieces by the torp boat :shifty:

why was it that I sank like that? and how come I could not get the boat off of the bottom?

I did repair all the damage whilst I was submerged.

Thanks,
Jangles

This is either because your crew fatigue is too low to respond to the orders or you were going too fast... both have happened to me before, and it didn't end so will...

I would order crash dive then set a new depth but if you were going to fast the boat might continue to go down. In this case I would slow down when near the set depth.

IIRC when you interrupt a crash dive, you end up with what we call the "crash dive blues". The next time you order a crash dive, the boat just keeps going down until you crush or hit bottom.

Take your pick from one of three:

1. Did you hit the emergency dive button in error?
2. Where your planes damaged?
3. Have you tinkered with the NSS_CFG file?

None of the above....then it is probably the "crash dive blues" (never experienced it personally).

1- nope
2 - not sure what the 'planes' are , but I was taking some hits!
3- nope.

I guess it must of been down to either the damage , or the crew fatigue.

Is it best to run from the torp boats? , or stand and fight?

also NYGM is bad for crash dive blues. I used to do that now and again but it wasn't until I installed NYGM that I had that problem (I find it doesn't happen in GWX very often)

Dive planes, and I just blow those boats out of the water

I find fighting those torp boats to be not worth it.

Yes, you will destroy them most of the time before they destroy you, but they will strafe you pretty good with their MG, damaging your boat by 10% or so.

You'll miss that 10% hull integrity next time you're trying to evade a destroyer at depth.

I recently hit the bottom on Rockall Bank after diving quickly following a night surface attack on a convoy. I stayed on the bottom at 85 metres whilst depth charges were being dropped very close by. Anyway, the depth charges were getting a bit too close so I issued a normal surface order and waited a while, nothing seemed to be happening so I ordered ahead 1 knot and slowly but surely the boat started to come up. I levelled off at 75 metres and crept away at ahead slow. My point being that, to get off the bottom can take some time and patience

You should also spare a thought for your gun crews when tackling the little buggas.

I almost always man the guns myself for detail work.

Another thing you can do when stuck on the bottom is just the opposite of crash diving and then setting a new depth. Blow ballast and as soon as you start to move set periscope depth.

Most of the time it works.

Same here, mainly because I am more accurate than my crew and they don't fire flak at ships
