Hello all,
I was thinking is it possible for sh5 to become a real game instead of this rubbish as it is now?

Madox58

YES!!
But it's not going to happen overnite.
Many very good modders still depend on S3D which won't work on SH5 files. (YET!)

So much of the grunt work is back to hex editing.
Even fewer modders can do that.
(You could probably count them on one hand!)

It's like haveing 4000 Cars to work on with only 5 Guys that can do the work.
:nope:

Once a full blown and correctly working Unit is completed?
And adjustments to S3D are done?
You'll see every Mother's Son doing conversions!

You know, if you are going to have the Subsim Radio Room logo as your sig, it might be a good idea to read the rules of the place.

Especially the part where it says...

We do not want SUBSIM Review and the Radio Room forums to degenerate into a collection of *This game sux!!!!* and other immature rants.

Thanks

Meh.
The guy is new.
It's more fun to poke the older Guys.
They know better but still provide so much fun.

I spent a few days with old friends looking at pictures from 30 years ago.
They gladly included photos of me crashed out with signs that read:
"Yes!
I s*** donkey d***s!"
:nope:
And any imaginable combinations of personnal insults one could paste on a passed out 'Friend'.
:haha:

So Ya.
Potty is a lite term to use.
(But I had a hell of a time in the old days!)

Since the last person to post wine/beer things was also the only guy who responded directly to your 'topic', you might want to cut him some slack. Would you rather no one had responded at all?

He's also one of the guys doing the most to make it a "real game". What have you done besides call it rubbish?

I'm confident that the modders will make this game as good as it can be. I'm less confident that Ubisoft will offer a patch to remove the DRM conponent.

If DRM removal was their final act for the Silent Hunter series, they would at least go out on a high note. :)

Anyone remember seawolves expansion for SHIII ?

IIRC that wasn't produced by Ubisoft. :hmmm: (I wasn't reading subsim's forum in 2006, so I'm not sure about it)

I mean ...maybe there could have some sort of add-on for SHV made by another company ?

Just sayin...

There aren't many precedents for that, although one recent example is "Over Flanders Fields," the WWI conversion for Microsoft Combat Flight Sim 3. Some people (like me) bought CFS3 just to play Flanders Fields, so it was a good way for MS to leverage an out-of-date game. Ubi isn't at that point yet with SH5, since it's only been out for a little while.

Maybe that could happen with SH5 after the initial sales period ends and it hits the bargain bin (if it hasn't already), but I doubt it. Microsoft at least has some history of working with outside developers with its flight sim series. The Ubi corporate culture seems very different with respect to their games, and their interaction with customers (although MS isn't winning any fans lately with their awful Windows Live gaming service on PC's) .

Anyway... I think what will happen with SH5 is that we'll get a user-modded SH5 that will be reasonably good by the end of this year (if not sooner), But it will still be limping along with some annoying aspects that can't be fixed, either because they're hard-coded, or it would just take too much work, like new sub models with full interiors, different animated crew, etc.

As some (Ducimus) have argued, there's a lot of legacy junk in the game engine... bugs or just design flaws that we keep seeing over and over. Once the modders finish the final big SH5 supermods it will be fun to play, but it won't ever be what it could have been if Ubi had started from scratch with a new engine, an enough time to do it right; instead of just milking an old product for a last dying gasp of revenue.

Considering the subsim market as a whole... SH5 is taking up all the "oxygen in the room" right now, because at least it looks good. In a few years, after SH5 starts showing its age and flaws (and maybe after a move to full 3D view gaming), someone else will come out with a better WWII subsim. There will always be at least a niche market for this type of game, because like flight sims, it's a perfect match for the computer as a game platform.

Wasn't Seawolves a collection of mods that were stolen from this site, repackaged without giving any credit to the modders, and then re-sold as an unofficial add-on.

Or am I mixing that up with something else?

That would really suck. I wonder what the legal situation would be in case you publish your mods under the GNU public license?

The GNU public license allows you to distribute 'free' software for a fee. Free means freedom of use and distribution and access to the source code if you want it and the ability to make changes and then distribute that as well, not free from cost.

I think Sh5 has alot of potential to be a good game, but that campaign has got to go, the graphics are outstanding, and the level of immersion is amazing.

my only serious gripe is the lack of crew management options (if i don't want so-and-so on my boat, well, im stuck with him) the campaign is too cut and dry, and the lack of different flotilla's and boat options. Im not sure how much can be modded and fixed, but im sure given the time and the neccicary tools, the modders will continue to do amazing things to this game. To the modders: its said ever so frequently, but I hope you know, you guys rock

And i prefer dark beer and light wine.

I think the serious answer is - 3 months is waaaaay to early to expect serious improvements in SH5. We need to know whether UBI has abandoned the game or not before serious stuff can be done. If there are more patches on the way then all the hard work done by our modders will most likely be undone by the patch.

The modders also need to understand how the game works and how to introduce new elements into the game , this takes time also.

Give it a year or so and maybe there will be major changes.

Oh and I like wine;)

A large number of threads here wander on and off topic. We are a fun-loving group, and most of us expect it and have a good time with it. Venting your disapproval only inspires people to play some more. Lighten up, have a good time, and all your questions will be answered sooner or later.

I'll drink to that, steve.

The real question is how long do we wait for feedback (or lack thereof) from ubi before we as a community unnofficially say ubi is officially no longer supporting sh5?

Sailor Steve
06-14-10, 01:29 PM
Ya got me. I have no idea. I think it's up to them to inform us one way or the other, and it's up to the individual modders to decide how long to wait before deciding another patch is never going to happen.

Privateer has already announced that he is waiting no longer, and has put together his own page dedicated to modder communication and cooperation.

Time will tell. :sunny:
