Privateer released a test version of the XIV Milk Cow U-boat for Silent Hunter 5 tonight, a major first step to successfully importing ships. During testing I realized this big and beautiful girl needed to be filmed!!

very impressive, with refinement (like removing the bow wave appearing through deck) this will be a great addition to SH5. Very well done!
I would very much like to see a Type VII along side for size comparrison.

Looking really good and it's also really good news for the game.
If this can be added then I would assume that more targets can too. At that point I may just start playing again.
Awesome work - big thanks to all the modders working on the game.
Now thats a pregnant submarine!
Lookin sweet!!!!

MIP mapping problem?
Madox58
06-12-10, 09:44 AM
The Occlusion and Normal mapping is not done on this version.
It was mostly built pre-1.2 patch.
I also can rarely test the work in Game.
System is to old.
:nope:
So I posted it up for others.
There is a bit more to finish and adjust granted.
But it works!

At what stage is this model actually at, especially in regards to AI.
For example if added to the game will it act like a harbour where you get the option to dock and refit? or does it actually react to the enemy by diving and operate under its own patrol orders sending reports of its position to the Type VII's?
I especially like the screenshots for size compare, would love to see some on the surface! It really is a big beast, exceptional work and gives hope to the community, bravo..
Madox58
06-12-10, 12:58 PM
It does dive and avoid enemy contact.
So it does use the imperfect AI Sub scripting.
It carried no offensive torps in real life, so this one doesn't carry them.
BBW did some work on the campaign files and resupplied from it.
So that works also.
Not sure about radio contact and all that.
There's much more important work to do first.
All the effects of current in-Game Subs needs to be finished,
the occlusion and normal mapping stuff,
and new crew for the deck.
(The old SH3 models just don't cut it in SH5)
ref, ju_88, and Icneumon did the original XIV for GWX.
So don't forget to credit them!
I've only been doing the conversion to SH5
with a few updated 3D parts thrown in.

If you look at the streams of bubbles coming off the VII's deck when submerged the streams get blurry as soon as they are no longer over the VII's "silhouette." Not sure why the game operates like this, but it appears that it makes things blurry underwater (as they should be) except for the submarines themselves, which are left clear and sharp...

I think maybe even Von assisted with the damage model...
that was in 2006/2007 (Pre GWX 2.0)
What exactly are you supposed to have stolen? :06:
Nice work. Congrats! That adds a crucial element to the game without which the whole West Atlantic campaign was but a joke.
Keep it up and one day I may buy the modds and download the game. Oh, ups -- wasn't that to be the other way around? Hmmh, seems quite unfair in this case...

Well to be fair, I wouldnt automatically assume they are doing it out of spite or jealousy.
Weather their claims are jutsfied or not, really depends on what they are accusing Privateer of stealing and what they have to back up the accusation.
To be honest these kind of disputes are best handled via PM, they are normally resolves peacfully this way too. so its better they dont post publicly as that just incites a flame war (which trashes the modders thread and then everyone loses.)
Hmm, well, you're right mate. ;)
Sorry for putting it that way then. :-?
When I need to make a claim, I just do it knowingly at my end, and publicly when it's needed, especially when what I'm looking for is public acknowledgement. :06:

This is an example of the thread at Marble Cake
:salute:
Details about the val file and how I did it:
The val file controls the base fore and aft wakes.
Previous versions of SH used several placer Nodes in the dat.
You'll see those listed commonly as follows:
SiajF01
SiajF01_2
SiajB
SiajC
SiajF02
SiajF02_2
Those Nodes had the controllers for the wakes attached in the val.
SH5 is different only in the fact it only uses 2 of those Nodes.
SiajF01 is the forward wake,
SiajB is the rear wake.
How to determine which is which in the val file:
There are 2 FoamWave entries in the SH5 val file.
Under that is a BowWave setting.
If BowWave = 1 or True?
That's your front wave and gets assigned to the SiajF01 Node.
The other FoamWave gets assigned to the SiajB Node.
Under each FoamWave controller is a ShipWakeSH5 controller that also gets attached to the Node.
The SiajB FoamWave has 2 ShipWakeSH5 controllers.
I did a search and replace of ID's in Hex to change the proper ID's.
The val file is now converted and we have our base waves to work with.

Privateer is right, anyone can learn if they are willing.
Hell, up until last week, I couldnt import for ****.
but with a good bit of help from privateer, and Skawaja's awesome S3d tool....
Its starting to happen -
Although these are SH4 shots, they can then be ported to SHV, long way to go though as these are ealry results with much to be adjusted.
and i still have many more Aircraft models after that.

I can't let those pilots go unnoticed though: it must we quite windy out there. But perfect for us, the flak gunners, aiming for them would perhaps lead the bullets smack on target! :D
Windy is the least of your problems when you have no legs! :)
The crews will be replaced with improved models.
the pilots are in external files from the air units themselves which is why they have not been edited yet.
I need figure out the props also, they are centred, even though i positioned the nodes in the right place - i think animation controller must be repositioned also in order for them to appear correctly.
And the glass is messed up too...
Fun Fun Fun.
Side by side shots under water, im not sure why, but the Milchow appears quite blury.... one for Privateer to look at. :woot:
Great work !
That underwater blur is caused by the Depth of Field effect. If that sub was actually a .gr2 file from the SH5 pipeline, it would look OK. Haven't you found a way yet to convert .dat to .gr2 ?

It starts with interest!
Or with the annoyance about a faulty Game!
Or to adapt the interface to his wishes and needs with the wish!
With small steps, as well as we run everything, read, write, learnt to count!
SH5 concerning, it is not perfect, the predecessors were not also!
But which perspective on future do we have?
Here certainly I miss many ...... many confessed, good Modder!

Shuting off the DepthBlurEffect clears the image up if one wants a better

All the effects controlled by the FX.GR2 and.fx file are being converted

Wonderful to see. I am looking forward very much to the Milch Cow being possible.
The last operational Supply U Boat was commanded by a relative and I have been hoping to see them operable in one of the SH series...
U-490 Oblt. Wilhelm Gerlach,
there were 10 of them...
U-459 She went out on 6 patrols starting in March, 1942 and during her career she supported 72 U-boats. U-460 From June 1942 to October 1943 she went out on 6 patrols supporting 86 U-boats.
U-461 This boat supported 75 U-boats during 6 patrols from June, 1942. U-462 She supported 64 U-boats in 5 patrols starting in July 1942.
U-463 This boat supported 74 U-boats in 5 patrols from July 1942. U-464 She was sunk on her maiden patrol and supported no U-boats.
U-487 During her 2 patrols she supported 25 U-boats. U-488 in her 3 patrols 41 U-boats were supported by her.
U-489 She was sunk on her maiden patrol and aided no U-boats. U-490 Sent out on her first patrol to assist the Monsun boats in May 1944 she was sunk a month later.

The Milk Cows were quite big, I have a book with a picture of both a Milk Cow and a VIIC next to each other (both returning from patrol), the upper deck of the empty Milk Cow is nearly as high as the VIIC´s coning tower.
Just to compare the facts: the total displacement of a VIIC was 1070 tons (total) and of the Milk Cow 2300 tons (total).
But does the resupply work?

It's an ongoing WIP and comes with a Test Mission.

Of course it will!
The whole thing started between BBW, JU_88, and I.
We started playing around in our areas.
BBW with the Campaign stuff,
JU with modeling,
Me with converting things.
The AI Subs caught my attention because of conversations with Dan
back at Neal's house at SubSim Meet 2008.
BBW started the campaign stuff,
JU started working to import stuff he did,
I started the conversion work.
This was before patch 1.2 came out.
We are where we are today.
BBW is takeing time off to enjoy the Summer,
JU is cracking on many things,
and I'm still working on what I can to help others.
You'll miss alot if you don't sign up.
It's becomeing a book of frustration followed by breath takeing insights!

The video linked to my sig has nothing to do with the Type XIV.
As for any future work on it?
I can not test things in Game as my system is to old, and being
a NoteBook, I can't upgrade it.
So it sits there until I can afford a new system.
As does a dozen other projects.
:nope:
You can still DL the files here:
http://www.mediafire.com/?efegodmffym
They are the old .dat format and not JSGME ready.
The GR2 format files have not been released due to system problems.
