1. Should i get enough crew members to fit all basic positions and additional crew to fit into "repair crew" and into gun positions? or should i only fill the basic stations and move ppl from these into repair crew and gun positions as needed?

2. Does the crew on the bridge serve any function when submerged?

3. sometimes my crew is still outside when submerged. does these take damage more easily if im depthcharged ?

4. i have noticed that my AA crew only show in their positions if i take command of 1 of the guns myself. if go to external view, or if im standing in the tower myself, they do not show. Does this mean that they will not protect the boat if im not there to crew a gun myself ?

inquiring minds wants to know.

Assumming 2 on the cannon and 1 on the AA slot you would be better of if you kept choose them based on their Guns rating but disperssing them as members of the more numerous compartments (one in the engines, one inth forward torp room, onw with the lookouts). Disperse them in different compartments so as to avoid a reduction of the compartment's performance under "General Quarters". If you permanently put them on the cannon/AAgun slots, they are condidered to be on their stations even when submerged and they're vulnerable on every form of attack against your sub (even depth charges). Depending on version/mod combination this maybe a problem,

The real question is wheteher you should have a dedicated Damage Control Group ...

In TMO and RFB you have Hogan's Alley to store your gun crews when submerged. In stock i leave 3 or 4 slots open in the damage control party to store them. Because like Diopos said, if they are in the gun position they are considered to be outside the sub even when submerged and easily wounded or killed.

I personally fill all the main compartment slots with the best skilled men available and then take the highest rated mechanics (at port, not from your engine room!) for the damage control team and keep replacing all of them throughout the war until they are all rated at 50 or above for there chosen area.

As for your gunners not appearing, try calling general quarters and then see if they are at the guns. I don't think they are rendered unless you are at battlestations.

The game does not model the actual sub crew very well and is lacking information about crews. The officer and petty officer totals are way off. Ratings present on a real sub have no specific slots on the crew management page so they can fill the Damage Control and other ambiguous slots. There were Yeomen, Ship's Cooks, Stewards, Signalmen, and Bakers to name some not clearly represented in game. Ratings that were not involved in battle operations were usually the damage control team. The Pharmacist's Mate's assistants were the officer's stewards since the wardroom was the "hospital" during General Quarters.
