How do I use sound contacts to predict the path of a ship? Just make two marks and connect with a line? Also, how can I predist the path of ships that are updated on the radio?

You must of missed this in your other thread.

As far as chasing down radio contacts goes, unless they are close to you(200 miles or less) and are heading your way there is little point chasing after them. Mark their location, it will help show where the shipping lanes are.

That's what I do - make marks at the last point on the contact line.

While sonar is not especially accurate, it's accurate enough to give you a rough course (and rough speed, if you do the 3-min. thing), and with that information, you should be able to intercept the target, and refine your solution once visual contact is made.

I draw a line on the map of their reported course, race to that line, then start doing hydrophone and/or radar checks until I make contact.

Tip: If you go to your sonar station and listen yourself, you can pick up the sound of ships props long before your sonar man can.

a rather annoying fact of life.

i make believe my sonar guys had suffered permanent hearing loss from deck gun shells exploding, or something similar. they tell me "no audio contact" even though the light is green. i just smile at them and tell 'em good job, even though in older days of yore, they would have been keel-halted.

it's no secret they don't hear so good, and in all likelihood, probably shouldn't be working the hydrophones.

i put bodies in there, but most of my sonar detections are done hands-on.
i guess that once they get close enough, it's ok to click the follow tab.right?
