so.. there i was minding my own business when suddenly an enemy
task force is sighted, not too far from me. I do some minor changes
in my heading and to my utter amazement i manage to intercept the task
force. I am still a long way of, and even though i move with flank speed
im forced to submerge when im still about 9K away from the enemy ships (enemy DD's flanking the TF was getting close).
I idenitfy the task force as consisting of a colorado BB, an iowa(?) BB, several heavy cruisers and some destroyers. Giving the matter some thuoght
i decide to spend all 4 forward torpedoes on an effort to try and hit the iowa(?) BB which is clearly the largest ship in the TF ( i believe it was registered in my recognition book to about 38K tonnage) . i do the range, AoB and speed calculations,
but realise that i can only manage to reach the ship if i set my torpedoes to slow speed. Well, anyways. since ill probably never get into such a position again, i launch the torpedoes at about 9K range and cross my fingers.

since i am cheating with the external camera i was able to see what happened when the BB was sunk. To my amazement i hit with 3 of the 4 torpedoes, yes i was quite surprised myself given the range :arrgh!:
And even more amazing the BB exploded on the first hit.. The BB was hit just behind the bridge, but when it hit, it seemed as if the whole boat exploded from bow to stern.. and the other 2 torpedoes which hit a few seconds later was more or less a sideshow.

My question: what on earth happened? im now thinking i should have spent 2 torpedoes on both BB since they seem quite easy to sink compared to merchants and tankers that sometimes need 3 or 4 torpedoes to sink

All boats have a sweet spot where you can have catastrophic damage (in stock) and sink a ship with one hit. Problem is finding then recreating the hit. If you fire 2 and miss the sweet spot you will probably not sink it with only two hits.

Be happy, a BB in the hand is worth two in bush.

Nice shooting.

38,000 sounds like a North Carolina or South Dakota and a hit just behind the bridge may have been fuel or boilers. Nice Shootin :salute:

I noticed something like that today.
Found the Carrier Hiryu patrolling near Tokyo, pretty near to the open ocean.
Fired 2 torpedo's, which missed, fired 2 more, one of which hit the stern.
Hiryu immediatly started to sink with the stern first.
The nice thing is that this was on 20 december 1941, only 13 days after Pearl Harbour!
That carrier was the only ship patrolling that far towards the open ocean.
Further in the bay i found a battleship and another carrier, but when i wanted to attack them as well (no-one appeared to have noticed my great succes), but some none-visible rocks appeared to have stopped my boat.
After that i wasn't able anymore to make any speed.

nappa. that is luck. period. 3 torpedoes wouldnt take out a bb if you didnt hit the sweet spot. i once needed 8 to take down one without waiting 14 hours. not only was it luck u hit the sweet but luck that it even hit. at that range id NEVER be able to score a hit

Mods vary, I had to put 12 M18's in the Yamato last night to get her down, but have sunk it with 9 M14's. Course it was a long chase with a few end arounds and it's elite crew doe's wonder repairing it.
