In comparing the success, the desire to play the participation of those here on Subsim says a lot about SH 3-4 and 5.

That is: 3+ months into SH3 if you posted a thread unless it was being replied to every few minutes it would be on page 3 within an hour.

SH4 never came close to that level and I can't help but notice the lack of participation on this SH5 forum.

That, IMO, says much regarding any PC game/sim and likely reflects the sales data and therefore bottom line.

Now, granted, SH3 has only 10 threads replied to as of this moment and SH5 has 12 (SH4 has 11) but I dare say at this point into SH3 there were 10-20 times the replies at any given time.

Just noticing, that's all

Silent Hunter 5 reminds me of that famous scene in Apollo 13.....

"We gotta find a way to make this fit into the hole
for this usin' nothin' but that."

In the movie, the crew made it home safely in the end....with Silent Hunter 5, sales are as dead as the Odyssey.

There should be some kind of acronym for those who don't have the game yet complain anyway.

No problems so far with the game DRM.

Regarding Wulfmann's original post: It doesn't mean anything. At any given time more or less members are participating in any given board.

And let's say for a second that it's true. It still doesn't mean anything, because SH3 is complete and new mods are coming out for it all the time, so the ones who still play it are still talking about it, myself included.

SH3 and SH4 used to be compared the same way. "Today there's more looking at blah blah blah..."

If more are looking at SH3 it's because that game has a lot of followers who go way back, and they aren't convinced yet that SH5 is ready for their attention.

Either SH5 is going to prove itself in the long run, and eventually it will be patched and modded the way SH3 is, which means it will surpass both the previous titles and they'll be relegated to the 'Classic Subsims' boards, or it will prove unfixable and everyone will end up going back to the older titles.

Either way there will be some who stick with it, and there will be some who wait until it's better to be convinced, and there will be some who claim that they're right and the other side are just trying to defend their wrong-headedness.

And either way this kind of challenging and bickering is useless. As is this thread.

SS, my OP was comparing SH3 when it was at this stage of life not really compared to today.

I did mention that to show that a 5 year old SH3 now should be outdated and all but gone version was getting a similar amount of participation but the main idea was how little attention the participants interact here with SH5 compared to the very high volume when SH3 was 3+ months in play.

That's true. I just grow weary of the comparisons, even though I play SH3 and SH4 exclusively at the moment.

One question I would be asking is....with the onset of games consoles in the past 5 years, are there as many people playing games on a PC as there was 5 years ago?

I'm interested in seeing what SH5 looks like in 5 years.

I'm guessing better than SH3 as well.

While I certainly prefer PC gaming the game consoles have improved enough that I would play SH5-6 or 7 on them if that would satisfy anti-pirating and not require a DRM type online thingy to play it.
However, it would still have to be modable as the devs just don't do a good enough job in finishing the sims

This was not intended as another SH3 vs SH5 comparison. It was about the posting activity which may seem like semantics but is a different form of comparison, IMO.

I do think you are correct that PC gaming numbers are down some but the drop in participation comparing SH3 activity in 2005 on Subsim to SH5 activity today has more to do with DRM and perhaps some plain tired of unfinished bugged play

It could also point out the fact that many people now play Console stuff
and no longer look at Games as in the past.

So the younger Guys don't play PC games nearly as much and have no interest to mod the PC stuff.

I've helped a few people figure out how to mod Console games lately.
And I don't have but an old X-Box that I don't use.
(It's 80 GIG HD is going into another system)

So we lose numbers of potental people on many levels.
The old hands around here grow tired and there's fewer new people to replace them.

The newer Technology, such as Granny, scares people!
Again, they just give up.
