Alien is a great flick also. Both the alien and the predator are awesome imaginative movie creatures. I think both are on equal ground as far as coolness but over all Aliens as movie was much better than Predator. If Predator had better actors with better dialog then it would have been on the same playing field as Aliens.

Eh, comparing Alien to Predator seems kind of like comparing SH3 to Call of Duty - different styles, somewhat different audiences. The Alien series seems more serious, while Predator was, well, an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie ;)

I saw Aliens (IT'S ALIENS NOT ALIEN 2 :stare:) before I saw the first one. I loved it, then I saw ALIEN few times and still was on the side of ALIENS. Last night I watched it yet again and it suddenly came to me how great the movie really is. While I think Cpl. Hicks is one of the best characters ever, I have to go with ALIEN on this one. Really helps if you study the flicks a bit, you get a lot more out of them.

Also, if money is not an issue, I recommend to get the Colonial Marines Technical Manual, it's hard to get and pricey, but it explains alot off the Colonial Marines seen in Aliens. It's only 160 pages or so, but it's like a bible when it comes to the marines of that time.

EDIT: As for Predator, the 2nd had some pretty cool scenes (like the subway), but I cant really decide which was better. 1st was more of an macho movie, the 2nd was more serious and dark. Both are great.

To be honest I still haven't seen the original

I've seen Aliens more than a few times though, #3, and the abomination that is Alien Resurrection... *shudder* Aliens has to be one of my favorite Sci-Fi movies, though I wasn't really sure what I thought of Alien 3.

Haven't seen the Predator films but IMO it's hard to compare Alien and Aliens... two very different types of movie, the first one I consider more of a suspense film that just happens to take place in outer space whereas the second one is more of an action flick. Enjoyed the hell out of both of them.

Alien series is to be watched like, for example, the LOTR movies. The two first are great, there's no plotholes (trust me, fans' have gone thru it), but then comes the 3rd film that was never mean't to be, which rips the whole series open: How there was egg in the escape pod, how both Ripley and the dog/ox (depends which version you watch) got impregnated by the same facehugger, was there two eggs, does the alien take in consideration the host (as Alien 3's alien walks on all 4's) yaa di daa. It really is a mess, but the fans have come up with quite a lot of "caps" to seal the holes. :yep:

The first AvP is ok, but it does leave a lot of questions open for both Predator & Alien movies, so they are usually considerated as different from the A & P cannon.

The second one was rubbish, so much potential wasted. It was like the remakes of Fog or Halloween or something, it REALLY sucked.

First one was Meh, okay if you've got nothing else to do and it comes on TV, but the second one was just garbage. All you need to know is that there's teen-drama spread out through half the movie ;) (Although it was funny seeing the love interest get sliced in half after having to watch her the rest of the film)

You know after seeing Terminator and Aliens I never understood why Michael Biehn's movie career didn't take off more than it did. I really loved him in both movies.

I take it the "pyramid under the ice" movie is the first AvP? Kinda gotta agree with WP on that one, I wouldn't have paid to watch it in the theater but it was on one weekend when I was channel surfing and it was okay. I've seen it in bits and pieces a couple more times since then. I might have to Netflix it just to see it all uncut without interruptions.

Had a pretty badass heroine as I recall, no Ellen Ripley of course but she managed to hold her own.

Yes, that was the first AvP, it is a good movie if you take it as an standalone one. If you take it to the cannon or lore of the A & P series, it doesn't add up at all. For example, in the first ALIEN Ash (the android) says that they havent encountered this species never before, which would contradict to what AvP was about. Even if the gal would've died, the Russians would've been there sooner or later and found the alien bodies (early in the movie Weyland says that they must hurry as Russian satellites have surely picked the heat signature aswell).

I wonder if they tried to typecast him and all he got offered was a bunch of lesser quality action flicks (of which there are always plenty to go around). Shame, really. I've enjoyed him in everything else I've seen him in which admittedly isn't much.

Yeah, exactly. The first time I saw it I didn't catch all of it - I think they were already at the pyramid by the time I started paying attention. I really didn't catch on to the fact that it was supposed to be a prequel. When I saw it again from the start I did get that, and then at the end I was wondering how knowledge of the species seemed to have disappeared completely in the time between that movie and the first Alien film. Especially since the one surviving human didn't seem like someone who could be easily bought off or otherwise disposed of.

Which made the involvement of the company apparently founded by Hendrickson's character in AvP a little weird later on, unless you're willing to believe that somehow only they knew about the species, presumably from the chick who survived, which doesn't seem likely unless they debriefed her and then got rid of her entirely and kept everyone else from investigating the site for, uh, how many years? Until they had the technology to be on the lookout for it on some other planet?

It's a bit of a stretch.

Dowly
06-04-10, 04:46 PM
It's a bit of a stretch.

Aye, and there is actually people who try to associate the movie with the A & P series'. Giving all kinds of excuses like Weyland being the first model of the Bishop series seen in ALIENS etc. Just doesnt make sence at all. :hmmm:

I liked Alien. Loved Aliens. Alien 3 is one of the few movies I've actually walked out of, in this case just after it started. The entire plot of Aliens centered around saving a little girl, and then five minutes into the next movie they tell me "Oh, by the way, she died anyway."? I swore out loud at the screen and walked out. Never seen it, never will.

And if you want to see Michael Biehn at his best, catch Tombstone. He plays Johnny Ringo, "The deadliest pistoleer since Wild Bill", manic-depressive Doc Holliday wannabe. He's great, as is everyone else in the movie.

Spoiler Alert!!!

He dies again.

You can actually judge the quality of a show by how many seasons it gets, like with Firefly. By that I mean one or two seasons until the axe falls = good show. Quality tv tend to be unpopular. I am not a huge fan of Firefly, but its good.

Not that great a film IMO, altho it's a favorite of my bro-in-law so I have seen it. Biehn is good but the only thing I really love about the film is Val Kilmer, who is so awesome that everyone else pales in comparison.
