January 1942, USS Plunger off Kii Suido.Attacked a convoy entering Kii Suido I spotted while conducted daylight submerged patrol in the actual channel.Managed to hit a Hakusika Maru with two fish and a Ryunn Maru with one, other prematurely exploded. The Hakuksikas bow flooded and she went under bow first.I then went to 165 feet and silent running. The Two DD's came close but never even pinged me or dropped charges.Seas were heavy but still, their performance was lackluster, even with the "harder escorts" patch Ducimus whipped up a while back attached, they just didnt pick me up, even when i went to scope depth to check and they were nearby.Early DD's are just too easy, even in TMO
I must have an engine knock or the vibrations from the ice cream machine, I'm still in December 41 and have a hard time not being pinged TMO RSRD

I'm not sure how it's programed, but maybe you lucked out. Perhaps their active sonar was useless in that weather and since they didn't really have an idea where you were they sat there trying to get anything on passives. Also yes they may seem easier in the early war, and it usually is, but I got stung real bad once and made a post about it. :03:

Escorts have a skill rating from 0 to 4. Ducimus began by eliminating all the fours because those are unshakable. That's why running stock or RFB you'll run into the occasional DD from hell. The rest of the escorts have a distribution of the skills, with more of them threes than anything else.
But you can still run into a dufus or two. It's actually fun after you identify them!

DD's are individually identifiable? I mean I know they have numbers (at least I think they do), but I thought escorts were randomly generated to fit the convoy parameters?

The campaign is broken up into years in the campaign files. The ships are generated randomly, however they are limited to whatever skill level they are set to for a given year. In 1941-42 escorts are pretty easy with the occasional skilled crew aboard. As the war progresses the skills improve, yet you can still run into poorly skilled escorts once in awhile.

Our bruised arms hung up for monuments;
Our stern alarums changed to merry meetings,
Our dreadful marches to delightful measures,
Grim-visaged war hath smoothed our wrinkled face!

I found with heavy sea's you can get by with murder, even later in the war to a degree, but early war count your blessings when you have it. I need those heavy sea's early war for the large Java invasion forces.

The DD's have the 'split personality' code programmed in them, :yep: one minute they're nice and timid some will just sail right pass you while your submerge as if to say hi how ya doing great day isn't it!. Without any warning they go from nice sleepy timid DDS to psychotic nutbars its like you hit a nerve and really pi$$ed them off. Like i attacked a convoy last night not one dd found me its 1944 they were all at the other side of the convoy. Im over here guys! Kinda thing. Sunk 3 ships, nothing. DDs are still sailing round having their tea party. Hit the 4th ship and bang! look through the scope and i got 3 destroyers racing straight for me. Hassled me for what seem like hours before i finally got away. I got pounded. Psychos! :arrgh!:

I'll agree with the sentiment that sometimes these tin cans seem to possess supernatural powers of detection, but I'm beginning to wonder if they don't have a little assistance. I ran into the Convoy From Hell the other night in spring of 1944 while playing TMO (thank you Ducimus!). Looked simple enough: two escorts with five ducklings steaming straight and true. What I got was detected immediately from 6,000,000 yards out and my butt kicked by depth charges dropped right through the mail slot. It happened so fast that I kept trying the approach and escape over and over to find out what I was doing wrong. But it didn't matter if I was sitting at periscope depth or 200 + feet below the thermal layer, silent and hovering, over and over again the DD and Escort instantly found me and pounded me into the sea bed. I even tried slipping under a wounded Maru to hide, but they circled the ship like jackels for hours until the Maru finally sank right on top of me. By then I was pretty ticked off, and I became obsessed with beating this pair (which I eventually did, but only by surfacing and running at flank straight at them pumping fish and shells, ramming the escort and making a bloody mess of my crew). Three of the five ducklings made good their escape.
But here's my question: I was down at sonar trying to determine from which quarter I was about to be blasted when I picked up a whine off the starboard beam - faint, but recognizable as an electric motor. Suddenly I'm Clark Gabel being asked "What is that, sir? I can't make it out?" So tell me, boys, is there a IJN sub out there passing love notes to my tormentors? Or have I finally lost my marbles? (Thank you Ducimus!)

>>I'm beginning to wonder if they don't have a little assistance. I ran into the Convoy From Hell the other night in spring of 1944 ........ I got was detected immediately form 6,000 yards out
Might have been radar on their part.

Sounds like calm water, and your not deep enough. Cheese tactic ill use on occasion, go down to 500 feet, boat allowing, put the rudder in a 9 degree port or starboard and leave it there for awhile. Only going to flank and hard rudder if they drop right on top of me.
>> is there a IJN sub out there passing love notes to my tormentors?
Possibly, (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/album.php?albumid=132&pictureid=807) but not likely. Still its possible. The only way you'll detect them is by hydrophone, or visually. They wont show up on radar. (bug i never fixed)

Possibly? Okay then, I'm possibly losing my marbles!:wah:
Your map doesn't show a sub off the north east coast of Luzon, but I'm going to track down one of those other suckers just to quiet my soul.
Thanks.

ah ive been wondering why subs dont show up on radar, wonder who could fix it since youre retired now...
can the subs in TMO dive and/or fire torpedos?

Not a problem that I am having. They seem to be able to detect me as easily as the planes do. :rotfl2:
