(Dont mind me im just venting some frustration!)

My ps3 bit the dust recently so i decided to buy a cheap-ish bluray player as a replacement.
Went to my local pc world store this morning and found a good player, no problems there, but what the heck is it with these sales guys trying to get me to buy the most expensive hdmi cable in existence.

He spent a good 15 mins trying to convince me that a £49.99 hdmi cable would give me far superior picture/sound quality to a standard £2-3 cable.
I tried to fight my corner and explain that i wasnt a total moron and that a digital signal is in no way affected by cable quality/gold connectors/shielding etc, its digital, you either get a signal or you dont, but he was having none of it.
He even went and fetched a chap from their installations department to explain that because he was a qualified installations engineer he could say with certainty that my cheap cable would result in fuzzy/sparkly picture quality and analogue quality sound... what a load of crap.

Now i know these guys work on commision but to tell outright lies to sell you stuff you dont need is unforgivable, needless to say i walked out without buying either the cable or the player.

...Right im done now.

Morons, they should realize that if they leave you alone, or recommend you something cheaper but similar quality, that they will make there $$ because you will be back to get more stuff.

Also, sounds like " eager beaver " is on commission :yep:

Surely no one would be stupid enough to pay that, maybe it's an error!:hmmm:

Good decision....serves the buggas right

I go in on the odd occasion to do some price comparisons with my local wholesaler....can't remember the last time I purchased anything :hmmm:

The reviews are the best bit :yep:

I was disappointed. I consider myself an audiophile - I regularly spend over $1000 on cables to get the ultimate sound. From the reviews.

That reminds me of the time I helped a friend buy a computer at Best Buy. The salesman tried to pressure her into buying an extended warranty "because computers only last a year before they start breaking down."

The whole 'cable' market has gone nuts.

Have you seen the prices on cat 5 jumpers these days?

They have gone from 3-5 bucks to up to and over 20 bucks a piece.

Same cable.

Do what my friend Rocky does. He was in a store and saw a 42" Plasma TV discounted for quick sale. He told the salesman he wanted it and the guy immediately went into 'bait-and-switch' mode, trying to tell him how much more wonderful his life would be if he bought the one that cost twice as much.

Every time the guy finished a sentence Rocky would smile and say "Thanks. I'll take this one."

"Thanks. I'll take this one."

"Thanks. I'll take this one."

Apparently when they get no other response these guys wear out pretty fast. :sunny:

Aye,

these guys are annoying, I'm someone who made his mind up before I go to the shop on what to get....if they aproach me to ask me if I need any help I just kindly wave them off that I don't require their help..so far they all moved on to the next customer.
I go to the check out, pay and leave.

Here we don't have that problem. They ask if you need help. You say no they walk away... I pickup what I want and pay and have a great day.. Thats good service.. But they know too who to scam and who to just say naw... :D

I actually had a good experience at my local Best Buy a few days ago. I was in electronics and a salesman asked if he could help me. I nodded and said "Headsets?", and he took me over and showed me where they were. When I was about to leave empty-handed he hustled over to me and asked "Didn't find what you were looking for?" I told him I was shopping around and trying to decide, and he said "Good idea. When you make your decision I'll help you get it."

That was a good salesman.

When they do that instead insist they give a further reduction on the discounted one as its obviously overpriced for such inferior quality.
If they won't then get the manager and do a deal with him instead, get a better price through him and cost the the pushy salesman all his commision.

When I was a young student, sometimes I worked at a computer shop to collect a few bucks. It was in the mid '90s. The owner used to told me that a good salesman must be able to distinguish between the customers who really know what they're looking for and the guillible idiots.

The first better be left unmolested. If you try forcing some stuff on them, they will leave never to be seen again. The others... well they are like a gold mine once you can find a way to convince them to buy what they don't need.

:arrgh!:

I do so hate salesmen!!:yep: especially car salesmen, true story:
Once I was walking along the footpath, I was actually looking to buy a car, I came to a car lot and walked along looking at some, I notice a couple of salesmen standing around, as soon as I spotted one I wanted a closer look at I entered the property, the moment I did they converged, I quickly went back to the foot path and strolled back a little, they matched my every move and as soon as I entered the lot they converged again, this happened three times then I gave up and left!!:-? No Sale!!:O:

This isn't easy for me but here we go...

My name is Richard... and I used to work for PC world.

Basically we got told to lie to the customers just to get a sale, I hated it. I never used to bother the customers though, I only talked bull crap when they came over to me and asked questions :nope: The stupid crap we'll do when we want to keep a job :damn:

Hi, Richard! Welcome to salesmen anonymous. :sunny:

I've done telephone customer service for three different companies, and I quit all three; not because I didn't like the job, but because every last one of them insisted on screwing the customers. I hated that.

I once worked at a copier store, and I really didn't like the lead salesman. One day I tried to pick a fight by asking him "Do you have to be born an a-hole to be a good salesman, or do you pick it up on the job?"

Rather than get mad at me, the guy put his arm around my shoulders, smiled and said "Come on, Steve. You know it's not like that." He may have seen it as a good come-back, but I felt like he was trying to sell himself to me. I was looking for a rag to wipe the oil off my shoulders.

Unless you've done it, it sucks more than you shall ever know. Coming home, having a shower and still feeling dirty is not a good feeling to try and go to sleep with :-?

I'll second Steve's though on Best Buy.
I was looking for a big screen TV and was looking at the very best 50" they had. I was telling the salesman what I like to watch, mostly old movies and TV shows, some Sports. I haven't watched network TV in 10 or more years and Showtime etc in 20.

His comment was you certainly don't need "that" TV and showed me a 52" at about a thousand dollars less. I could not be happier with the set, just what I needed.

I've had much the same experience with other purchases at Best Buy.
If I ask for help they give it and when I don't they leave.

I was in another electronics store, don't remember which one, to buy a new stereo set. The salesman had a wall of speakers he could patch into witch stereo he wanted. When he demonstrated the lower cost one I wanted he plugged the crappiest speakers on the wall. Than plugged in the very best to show how much better the one he wanted to sell sounded.

I just looked at him and asked if he though I was completely fuc**n stupid and walked out, never to set foot in that store again. This was 20 years ago.

LOL I thought only people here would try to fool their potential customer. We get that a lot here.

I hate it too. Scum owners teach their employees how to be like them I suppose. I accept no other explanation.
