View Full Version : British Coastal Waters
I haven't seen another ship in three days of patroling ( at least not anything in range ).And now the weather has turned bad. Its going to be real hard to make 50k tons if there are no ships. SH5 smells like SH4. Just not enough action. I liked SH3 better than SH4 & SH5 combined.
This sim is for someone that has a lot of time on there hands. I hope the action picks up soon. :damn:
Why the necessity for a constant internet connection? That makes the game slow to load and it slows the computer. That idea is going to bite UBI in the pocket book.
Please tell me that the dialogs and abilities improve rapidly as the campaign progresses.

Look on the map above....I find my huge convoys about where the word "I've" is. large unprotected convoys that you can pick off at ease and get your quota in one or two missions, depending on year.
hunt waters just out of sight of the ports on that map also. They are there, and when you find them they are hard to miss and truely a sight to behold.
Ive noticed dialog only changes once per mission. All your main charcters have something to say each time, but only one thing and that conversation lasts about the time it takes to lower your periscope while leaving the pen, hopefully someone that can write will mod a story line or something sometime.

TheDarkWraith's UI mod fixes the "obs scope always up" thing, or you can use the code found in this post (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=1354395&postcount=16) to fix it manually.

Hey Shoe,
ya know one problem (and I don't think its fixed yet) is if you have upgraded your hydraphone. If you did, then you'll need to submerge your sub to get good contacts as you patrol from time to time. Or you can be like me, and head back to the port and change it back to regular hydraphone.
I am be no means a great sub captain, but I do hope I am using the correct terms here. The upgraded item I am talking about can be seen revolving (360 deg around) on the deck of your sub.
I bet that is why your not getting much action. It makes a HUGE difference!

This. :DL Once you update your hyrdrophones or install a mod that disables surface 'phones you'll miss 80% of the contacts you normally found probably, unless you're constantly submerging.
Eariler I was at a patrol point, circling about 50km from the icon. Surface for 3 hours, submerge for 1 hour, surface again... I circled the patrol point THREE TIMES like that before I finally got a sound contacts, but I'd "hiccuped" a few times like you do when something comes near.
Thanks for that info about the hydrophones. I'll change it back (maybe). I finally found a convoy, but for some reason all my torpedoes missed except for the last aft torpedo. Since there were no destroyers around I deciced to surface and try the deck gun.
Apparently in SH5 it takes a lot of shots to sink a merchant ship. The sky was dark so I had a nice night blasting merchants. I lighted up all eight merchants including the one I had torpedoed, but I was only able to sink two after exhausting all of my ammo.
I thought sure the merchants would go to the bottom but they just continued on.
What is the correct strategy? I suspect I should concentrate on one ship at a time. I figured it would be best to hit all merchants to slow them and then finish them off. Obviously that didn't work. And I got to get my torpedo accuracy up.
