I was digging thru my great grandmothers jewelry box.. He husband was in wwII and i came across this interesting piece of history.

On the botttom right it says something about this coming from the 8th army. The bottom left says restricted

Man, that looks like some kind of guide to reading signs put up by natives or enemy forces somewhere in the Pacific theater... can't imagine what else it would be.

Wikipedia says the 8th Army was part of the Occupation force in Japan and prior to that was involved in clearing part of the Phillipines.

Makes sense then that they would be issued some kind of guide letting them know what those kanji meant if they were on signs indicating dangerous areas, landmines, etc.

Yes it is a nice piece of history. Much like the XX Corps maps of Europe i found in my grandfather's possession.

ooh thats cool too. I still have a bunch of his deployment papers and all the such. right now most of that stuff is in storage. plus we got a camera from postwar Germany because he was stationed their after the war. i need to find it and see if their is any film tucked away in it.
