Hi,

I've looked on official and here and... it's all so confusing so I'll be better off asking you guys...:

What's next from UBI regarding patching this "swiss cheese of a game"? 1.3 planned at all? Does anybody actually care?

Ubi have not said anything..... As usual. :nope:

Do we care? Of cause we care. we would love to have a few more patches. :yep:

But it's not looking promising.

IMO SH5 needs to sell.... otherwise there will not be anymore surport from Ubi.

In my opinion, Ubisoft doomed Silent Hunter 5 before it was even released.

Those of us that have been around since Ubisoft acquired the Silent Hunter series are well used to seeing unfinished, buggy games released that required significant patching after release.

With SH5 though, Ubisoft went one stage further. They decided to target a different demographic to sell to...namely the 'casual gamers'. Ubisoft believed that if they made the game more of a 'Das Boot' experience, including a 'first person' component, and also made the game more visually exciting at the expense of realism, then the casual gamers would buy the game.

Ubisoft was wrong. The casual gamers have not purchased this game in anything like the hoped for numbers, and many of us subsimmers have not purchased the game because of the requirement to use Ubisoft servers in order to play the game at all.

The end result of this fiasco is an unfinished, buggy game that isn't selling, and which Ubisoft therefore won't continue to invest in.

They might offer a patch to allow the game to be played offline so that they can free up the allocated servers, but I wouldn't expect anything more than that.

At first I wanted them to announce the 1.3 patch to fix the rest of the bugs. Then I wanted them to at least acknowledge that they won't be fixing the game anymore. Now I'll settle for anyone official from Ubisoft just making a bleating type of sound, just to prove they remember making Silent Hunter 5.

The complete abandonment of SH5 by Ubisoft is just stupid. There's been absolutely no communication from the company at all about this game. Unprofessional doesn't begin to cover it.

I doubt that. They'll simply shut down the servers one day. They already got their money, so why bother removing DRM from the game?

Because they've mostly said as much, it's in their EULA and we're all hoping for the best. :DL

I know Ubi has made some pretty bad decisions lately, but I don't think they would do that. Maybe I am just optimistic about it.

Anyway, I would hope that the public outcry if they were to try that, would FORCE them to patch out the DRM. Because, if they did that, I think I might catch a plane to Ubisoft headquarters and picket line the place. I have always wanted to go to Paris anyway.:yep:

And once the DRM is removed or circumvented with a patch... I think it will sell. So really its up to Ubi now.

That is right, that would allow me to understand how this all came about this time. It is clearly gone much worse than the last two parts of the series, and it really sounds like they decided to abandon the franchise in the middle of the development cycle of SHV already, just pushing it out as quick as possible and then end it. The time frame for that, probably mid-/late autumn 2009, would also coincide with the new business strategy paper published by Ubisoft Corporate before the end of last year, in which they announced a refocusing and change of publishing modes. Hmmh, this would make some sense, or not?

They have other games on the same servers (e.g. settlers 7 & AC 2 + any new Ubisoft games) so i doubt they would shut them down anytime soon.

And as for removing the DRM....

From the EULA :-

You understand and agree that this Multimedia Product requires an online connection at all times and the Multimedia Product must be played through the Internet services provided at ubi.com. In the event Ubisoft terminates or discontinues Internet services associated with this Multimedia Product, Ubisoft will provide a software update that will allow the User to utilize the Multimedia Product without connecting to Ubisoft's servers.

Thanks for clearing that up jwilliams, I had not read anything official on that yet(too lazy to actually go looking for it:O:):salute:

Patch 1.2 wasn't released that long ago. So the question of:

So, what now...?

Seems a little premature to me. That said, I have reason to believe that 1.2 represents the last people will see from Ubi in way of support for SH5.

So that brings me back to the question of this thread.

So what now?

You have a couple of options, depending on what you decide to do, and how bad you want to make this game work/exceed/excel.

If your more of a gamer, and less of a die hard fan, with SH5 being just as good as any other game, the answer to "what now?" is simple. You can either play the game as it is, with what mods are available, or you can shelve it for 6 to 12 months, and then D/L the latest advanced mods, and enjoy SH5 in a more advanced state - sparing yourself of earlier frustration that one can experience right now.

Or, if your more of a die hard fan, and SH5 isn't just any other game, the answer to "what now" is also simple. Accept the situation, and make the most of what you have. You can go about that in two ways. Play the game as it lays with whats available, or set about modding the game yourself to improve it. After all, one can either complain and sigh wistfully, or one can take the proverbial bull by the horns and do something about it. This choice promises long hours, and lots of time spent doing trial and error testing. How bad do you want this game to kick ass?

So ultimately, the question of "what now?", is really all up to you.

You can post all the pretty pictures of water and sky you want, but the reality is that Ubisoft made the game prettier to look at and ignored all of the components that would make it a sim rather than a game.

Look at the AI, the campaign ending in 1943, the functionality of the sub...the list is long.

The modders can make the sky, the clouds and the water look prettier....making this a sim is a whole different deal. There is much they will accomplish over the next six months, but there will be no more patches, and Silent Hunter 5 will always be fundamentally flawed.

You need to visit the SH5 mod forum more often ,the AI etc etc you are talking have already been fixed or are in the process to be soon fixed ,is just a matter of time :DL

You also need to visit other forums more often because that pic you use for comparison is from SH3, which hasn't aged that well on the visual side and imho looks horrible by today's standards. SH4 would offer a far better comparison, and it'd also show that the SH5 visuals are pretty but not that advanced compared to what we've had before.

The question is what kind of improvements in graphics of games in general, or SHIII specifically do you still expect? It has kind of converged already before SHV. So the best improvement in "appearance" that probably can be achieved in new games is adding of details. I.e. visual range of 30km, with smoke evolultion specific to each ship type, speed, and dissipation according to a detailed wind and humidity simulation. More detailed 3D models of ships, that model each single bulk head and all stuff on deck etc. Things like this.

So in the end, it comes back down to improvements of realism, and simulation of physics and environment. There is not so much you can still do about "graphics" per se.

The modders can fix a lot, but with a game in this condition only getting half the number of patches of SHIV and SHIII, the end result will be very predictable.

Much of the functionality I refer to cannot be fixed by the modders because they don't have access to the necessary code. But, hey, if you're happy with the game then enjoy it. :)

They thought that stadimeter had to be fixed by devs because it's hard coded, but what do you know. TheDarkwraith fixed it. I have a faint idea how hard that must have been, and time consuming, but nevertheless it is working now. Don't know what other functionality are you referring, but never say never... Modders do an incredible job!
