Well, before I begin. I've been back to playing my career and have been noticing things that I have questions about. I think I'll number them and if anyone has any knowledge or comments, please refer to the number. I'll rate how important these are to me between -A- to -C-. A is important C is least important.
I'll begin:
#1 -A-
The chronometer. Is there a way to keep it on all the time or off all the time? I really find it handy. I mean it would be great to be able to turn it on or off manually.
#2 -C-
When a depth charge explodes, what kind of blast radius does it have? And also what kind of damage will it do at certain distances within the blast radius?
#3 -B-
If anyone can point me in the direction to get a gold/brass coloured dials for the game, that would be great! Also sharper marks on it. The same with the dial compass.
#4 -B-
Is there any fix/mod to zoom in on the PPI radar? Also, on the same note, to zoom OUT on the A-scope?
#5 -C-
A mod where you can set bearing in the sonar to course would be nice! Like looking through the scopes.
#6 -n/a-
What is that gauge/dial thing called in the attack periscope up un the high right? I know what it does, just what is it called?
#7 -n/a-
I'm curious historically, how are the hydrophones able to work on the surface? Is it those knobs under the boat? I thought it was supposed to be...(for lack of a better description) the flat thingy that spins around.
#8 -n/a-
Does active sonar (ping) have to be the same direction as the passive sensor?
#9 -B-
I have not had a single drop of rain ever. Precipitations? Never! It must be a TMO 1.9 thing?
#10 -B-
Can you get the radar guy to follow a target like the sonar guy?
#11 -A-
(Last question for now)
When your conning tower gets the new "less visible" upgrades, does that actually have any effect in the game?

#1 This has been brought up before and I haven't heard of a mod to keep the stopwatch on or off the screen.
#2 Depends on the mod used. For TMO Ducimus would be able to answer this.
#3 There have been some hud and dials mods out there but for the most part they go too far. The ones I like are in The max optics mod by Captnscerve. A little bit eraser to read.
#4 Not as far as I have ever heard and it also has been asked before. Edit now that I think about it I believe that there was a mod that changed to camera position, could zoom though. Can't remember what mod it is right now.
#5 Again, not as far as I have heard. Agreed it would be nice.
#6 Upper right is the Torpedo Data Computer, TDC data input functions. Upper left is the TDC display. Together the make about 75% of a real TDC functions. Also the Position Keeper. PK is on the left.
#7 The little thingies on the keel are the passive sonar, Hydrophones. The flat spinning thingie is part of the system but I not sure what it does.
The problem is in game it works too good, can track a contact at flank speed which would never happen in real life.
#8 To get a good active ping range you must zero in the hydrophone on the contact, the better you zero in the better the range will be.
#9 The environmental mod Ducimus used in TMO seems to have cut down on the frequency and duration of storms, but they will come believe me. Don't know about RFB.
#10 Simple answer NO.
#11 I'm not sure but I believe it does but probably not much.

6 - I thought that dial was called the Attack Data Tool - which then sends to the TDC :hmmm:
3 - Which dials are you talking about - and which boat are you using
9 - Trust me it rains in TMO......Was tracking two large convoys in the Southern Luzon Straight - between the two lowest islands above Aparri - one going south the other north and I was bang in the middle of them. Popped up to have a look and it was chucking it down. This lasted for 4 days and I couldnt do anything to get a shot off on either. At one point i was less than 500yds from the escorting waships
10 - Can I expand on this one - I know you can get the sonar guy to follow closest target but is it possible to follow a specific target ie to pick out a merchant in the midst of all the dd and follow that

Interesting answers Magic! I would like you to elaborate on #3 and #4. I'm very interested.
As for #7, I agree, you should have to dive to get any reception. ;)
6 - I thought that dial was called the Attack Data Tool - which then sends to the TDC :hmmm:
I know what it does, I was just wondering what it is called!
3 - Which dials are you talking about - and which boat are you using
I'm talking about the "HUD" Heads up display. I would like them to look more like what they look like in the control room. Even the stop watch :O: er chronometer. The compass and the range in the ?Attack Data Tool? is the only one that really bothers me. Very hard to see clearly.
I love the sh... er, crapy weather. I did get a lot of thunder storms and high wind, just no rain, that was why I found it strange. Also nothing heavier than light fog.
10 - Can I expand on this one - I know you can get the sonar guy to follow closest target but is it possible to follow a specific target ie to pick out a merchant in the midst of all the dd and follow that
I guess the answer is no, oi! :nope:

Reg. #7, Sonar Gear... have a look in the manual: http://www.hnsa.org/doc/fleetsub/sonar/index.htm
We have three hydrophones,
one topside:

and two below keel:

Have you looked at these http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=169160...they wont sort of the range markings in the thingy top right - new "official" name and now adopted by subpac - but will sort out other hud dials.

To expand on Jan Kyster's great post, the sonar head on deck is the acoustic sonar head which works in the normal range of human hearing. Only that particular sonar head works submerged but not on the surface.
But under the boat you have two supersonic sonar globes, which have two kinds of passive and all your active sonar. They work on the surface, listening for sounds of higher frequency than the human ear can detect.
Manuals at the site Jan Kyster cites specifically say that the supersonic sonar gear continued to operate "efficiently" on the surface, that the sonar operator was to remain at his station while surfaced unless the Captain ordered him to stand down.
Therefore it would be very unrealistic to keep the sonar from working on the surface. There was a limit to the surface speed you could run and still be able to develop any useful information from the supersonic sonar. Our best guess is that 10 knots was about the limiting speed. Since we cruise around at 9 knots normally for best fuel economy, the sonar would be useful 100% of cruise time. Only during pursuit or high speed evasion would the supersonic sonar be useless. Apparently there hasn't been a way to use a limiting speed as a way of turning the sonar off and on, so modders have been mostly turning it off on the surface. That is a grave mistake.

Of course if one was equipped with radars, then I would switch the two globes off = retract them into the hull. They seems awfully fragile to me! :88)
And with radar on board, they're kinda "superfluous" on the surface anyway...

# 3 Max optic only changes the hud dials not the TDC.
The hud won't look like the control room but are easier to read.
A lot of people don't like Max Optics but I love it, very large scope view, takes up most of the screen. I got tired of squinting at everything trying to see.
And I've got a 24" screen. When you look through the scope that is all you really see, you just tune out all the other dials, etc. till you want to see them.
One of my real dislikes for the way SH5 peri screen looks, too much stuff in there. I like the slid outs so I can get rid of all that stuff when I want.
# 4 I miss typed. The mod I was referring to is RCM Imperial mod. it modifies the radar scopes and changes the camera position but you can not zoom. I had to uninstall it as it broke something else, don't remember just what it was. Free cam I believe.

and wait until you find the beanstalk that goes to the sky.
I agree with Mag,,,got to have Maxoptics, need it for my eyes...

Armistead, I was going to ask about lightning also, but I thought that would be going too far! Is that in TMO 1.9?:o
Jan, I noticed those hydrophones, both the sphere ones and the spinning topside one. I'm sure I understand how they work now. Why retract them? Unless you're going to run aground, I see no reason to. Sometimes you pick contacts up on sonar before radar anyways.
RRobins, yes, it would be nice, or more realistic if things worked in the game like the way they did in real life.:nope:
Thank you everyone for your replies. I've learned a lot! Sometimes I just get too curious about everything!:D
P.S. Does anyone have a link to the Radar mod?

As far as I know lightning doesn't exist in campaign mode...but..for some reason I get it in 2 places that I've found if conditions are right. Subic bay and Manila in career mode. I'm told it also works in single.
