Any noticeable improvement with SH5? I still have stutters (and jelly water) on my ATI 4850.

I don't know if this will help, but I also was experiencing stuttering animation and sound. :hmmm: Upgrading the driver to 10.5 on my Radeon HD 4350 didn't solve anything. However, I did finally try going into the graphics options and setting the screen resolution and, more importantly, I think, refresh rate to match my graphics card settings. Now, the image is full screen and the animation and sound is smooth as silk. :yeah:
Couldn't hurt, at least not permanently, to check out your settings and see if they match.

You know, one thing that has helped me (could be totally different with a different setup) is decompressing the .dds files. Some things, like wakes, deckwaves, smoke, etc. would look stuttery or would cause a loss in frame rate. So I have been going all over to those things opening the files, and saving them uncompressed. And, I have noticed an improvement in frame rates, and a lot smoother animation on things that I do this to. I am using a ATI Radeon 4600 series btw.
It may not help you, but it really couldn't hurt anything.

Sounds intriguing! :hmmm: How does one go about decompressing DDS files?
Thanks!

All you need is an image editing program, Photoshop being the best(and the most expensive). However, I use a program called GIMP, it is free and works really well. You may need to get a plug-in for it, they are explained by the program after you install it. Just do a google search for GIMP and you will find it.
After you have it installed and the proper plug-in installed, all you need to do is open the .dds file that you think is rendering poorly in game and save it again telling it not to compress. All .dds files come compressed stock.

I see. The DDS files are image files. I have and know how to use GIMP, so I hope this will be as easy as you say.
Thanks for this cool tip! :salute:
Cool tip indeed. Going to try this. Why not, I have TONS of extra space?

I had to revert back to 10.4 because with 10.5 as soon as you move the overdrive settings the card stays at full power and doesnt idle .

No improvements for me. Both free camera and animations still stuttering, and of course jelly water.
Wondering why ati devs are not instrested to fix performances with this game.............but they still care about Crysis. Unbelievable :rotfl2:
It may not be a driver issue and thus nothing can be fixed with updates. During SH4 the devs admitted they didn't like the lack of cooperation the (then pre amd) ati support provided and so ATI coding issues didn't get resolved. This attitude may have continued.
Amazing enough, graphics drivers aren't the only thing impacting frame rates. Any of your other drivers (including sound) can impact the CPU and thus graphics and everything else.
If your puter meets or exceeds the optimum specs and the game specifically supports your card, you should take a look at the full range of typical culprits:
1) bios version.
2) miniport (nic, etc.)
3) sound.
4) controllers (keyboard, hotkeys, joystick, profilers) which may be sending spurious signals or supporting software buggy.
5) malware. The one program you cannot live without is probably the one killing you.
6) Protection software. Sometimes the "good guys" are worse than the "bad guys."
7) too many apps and/or background programs.
8) graphics settings set unrealistically high for your machine's performance (wishful thinking syndrome.)
9) memory (too slow or too little available causing too much disk cache usage. Disk cache size too small or set to dynamic causing too much resizing.
10) screen resolution and or refresh rate incompatibility.
11) partially failed hardware components (HDs typically.)
12) ATI Catalyst updates often work better when a full un-install has been performed first.
13) Tried setting the ATI control panel to defaults and checked results?

If there are a good number of people who would want a mod for decompressing some key .dds files, I could just put together the ones I have decompressed for myself, and release it.

Not sure of but I just updated my 5870 to the new driver, and while ever other game in my arsenal is running fine, Battlefield, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Crysis, you name it max settings... now when I run Silent Hunter at max settings... something I've been doing since release, I'm building up heat so fast that I have no choice but to shut down, and on one occasion the computer went ahead and shut down on its own.. I'm talking 100C and up... quickly.. like before I can even get out of the sub pen... I have set my fan speed to 100, and reduced the graphics level to medium and i'm hovering around 80-90 C which seems ridiculous... when Crysis or Modern Warfare 2, or Bad Company 2 don't get me over 60 C.. ever. I'm running three case fans.. in a central air house that never gets over 68....
This is just insane..

Are you running win 7 64 bit ?
Drewcifer
05-30-10, 10:14 PM
Yes win 7 64 bit. The thing I don't get Is I was playing Mass Effect 2 for about two hours, not over 60C.. jumped online played Bad company 2 for a while, not over 60 C. Jumped on Silent Hunter.. picked my mission, hopped on the sub ordered ahead one third... we start creeping out of the pen and BOOM done.. card shows 100C-110C from just that brief running period when I run the game and watch the temp.. so I don't know what it got to when it shut down but regardless its getting to 100C REALLY quick..
Drewcifer
05-30-10, 10:21 PM
I have noticed that I went from an idle temp from 10.4 of around 43 C.. to 10.5 I'm idle at 51 C... thats Zero GPU Load and the fan at 20%.

I went back to 10.4 because the card doesnt idle down in 10.5 . I also downclocked my 5870 to 800mhz gpu and 1100 memory clock . I left the vcore as is .

I got a ASUS EAH5870 V2 and I have exact the same problem , I am in the process to swap the GPU cooler with a Arctic Cooling Accelero S1 rev2 plus a extra huge heatsink attached at the back of the GPU PCB , I hope this two heatsink will reduce temperatures
My idle temps are the same as before driver update , 36C idle with room temps of 24C

If you search around you should find people on various sites discussing this issue. Apparently ATI 'fixed' a flickering problem with dual-monitor support by increasing the idle clock speed of the card, even on a single monitor setup. I'm not sure of the full extent of the changes, or why that would specifically create a problem at higher loads, but I would recommend reverting back to 10.4 anyway if you had no problems with that version.

Ok, I will put together all the .dds files that I know cause clipping and low fps, and release them as a mod on the modworkshop forum. This will take a little time, but I should have it within a day (maybe today if I have time). Remember, this is not a miraculous fix, but it does help a bit especially for slower computers. Cheers.

One problem, a lot of the .dds files that would need decompressing are already moddified by other mods(however, most of them were left compressed). I will see if I can get permission to use the .dds files from all the relevant modders. If I do not get permission, then sorry guys. Wish me luck.

Sorry to anyone who wanted the .dds file decompression fix, I have gotten turned down by some key modders, and it would really be pointless to do this without them.:nope:

I could easily post a list of the worst ones right here, but everyone would have to get software that could decompress them. GIMP is a free image editing program that could do it. It is pretty good, I use it.
Edit: Actually, I have an even easier idea for how you can find them. Unload all mods, then go through the mods themselves opening up any file with extension .dds with GIMP, Photoshop, or something similar, and simply "save as" and tell it to not put a compression on them. After that, reload your mods. Most of the culprits are modified by environmental mods, explosion mods, and smoke mods. So if you do this to those mods, you will get the benefit. Again, sorry I cannot just do this for you but my hands are tied.

Thank you, SteelViking. I will look into the files.
Can I use Paint.Net? I use it for my dds and tga editing and works great.
Maybe you are interested in a movie background for your menu.

My newest issue with the 10.5 drivers.
After playing in multiplayer for maybe one hour the game is very slow.
I notice the frequency values in CCC was not 800/1100. It's the desktop setting not the 3D setting. ??????? Anyone with problems like this?
CPU 13%, memory 39%.

If I play SH5 in window mode the frequencies was 800/1100 but when I open the Windows Media Center to watch TV the values going down to 400/900 and the game is slow. :damn: Today I hate M$, AMD, UBI and SH5.
Maybe next SH supports opengl and runs under linux.
Earlier i had an install of SHIII in a virtual machine under OSX (as host) but this was very slow  The new versions of virtualbox supports dx9.0c like SH5.
