Mmmm...difficult match, glad we had that nice shot that made it 1 - 0

Must say Japanese had a very well made defense covering the lines of our strikers very well. The coach used the same line up as against Denmark and it showed it doesn't work...he needs to work on a new line up for the next match.

I don't know why everyone is criticising Heskey.

I think he's been solid in defence for Algeria.

I can't believe we only managed a draw against a sh!t team we should easily have beaten.

That "s h i t" team actually played for 90 minutes. The english team did what ? Walked for the entire match ? :haha: :haha: If the algerians had had a quality striker they would have made a goleada of the english team.
Lucky for you they didn't.

@goldorak

I'm not aware of your country of origin, nor do I particularly care or feel it important....but might I respectfully suggest you read my posts on this thread, the posts made since last nights footballing comedy show.

You might then get a feel for the nuance/context of what I'm alluding too.

Far better to have a clearer understanding of what you are responding too.

I'm actually being sarcastic/critical of my own countries efforts in this tournament.

Top tip for England's next game:
If you're watching on SKY+ press pause and wait a second before pressing play.
Being a second or two behind the live play will give you that authentic Emile Heskey viewpoint.

Yes it was spain 82. But that time is far far away.
Although some days ago, someone asked a brasilan player wether they feared the italian team. They guy answered, italy the only country that can play 3 games ending in draw during the inital phase of the world cup and yet go on to win the world cup.
So you never know. We might end winning the cup again. :woot: :D
We suck during the intial phase against modest teams (I mean with all due respect to NZ they didn't have any talent on the field, but thats part of the charm of football) and when playing aginast the big teams the story is different.
Ah well, we need to win and win big against slovakia.

Fabio Capello was wheeling his shopping trolley across the supermarket car park when he noticed an old lady struggling with her bags of shopping. He stopped and asked, "Can you manage dear?" To which the old lady replied, "No way. You got yourself into this mess, don't ask me to sort it out!"

Three hours of football and Robert Green is still England's top scorer.

A little worse ? :-? Much much worse.
At least the English team plays, the French team has no such will.
The fault rests squarly within the French Football Federation and of course with Domench. The worst coach ever to grace a football field. He has singlehandedly destroyed what little team there was. A man more suited for intrigue in palace courts than being the coach of a football team. Divide et Impera is his motto.
It works when you are the head of an Empire, not so well when you have to motivate your players to give all they have on the playig field. I can't wait to see him go away together with some of the staff.

Possibly 4 NK defectors. France deconstructing itself in scandals. And more favourites struggling to give convincing performances, more or less. So far it is not the football festival people were hoping for, all in all.

I already have started the countdown for Germany vs Ghana on wednesday. Germany is the only national team in football that so far never has failed to qualify for the final round of the last 16 of a world championship, the first rounds in world championships always were survived. And at the European championship 2 years ago, it also lost one match in the first round - and then marched through to the finals, losing only to Spain there. and finally, although they lost against serbia - it was a loss caused by lack of fortune and a terrible referee's impact messing up the match. Actually, the team played not bad.

We have no reason not to be confident that Ghana can be beaten.

What i really like is that theb Germans have learned to fire at the goal. In the past, they had few chances only, scored lucky goals from standards, and defended that. This time, the defence is not the best, but the offence really is creative, and aggressive and pressing. With Klose missing next match, it maybe becomes even better.

I wouldn't attack my team if there was a mistake made by goalie. This isn't the end of England's run, by supporting the team they might actually still help the English team to go through.

That type of attitude is typical of the hooligan-attitude which is unfortunately typical of the British mindset.

No you don't get it.
This type of attitude is typical of countries that have world class football teams. You think the English team is getting off easy ? Imagine the apocalyse if Spain, or even Italy, Germany or Brasil were to be eliminated during this phase.

I think Finland has done ok in the footballing world for a country of 5 million. I don't think it's very respectful of the athletes or indeed people who appreciate and support the team regardless. Only glory hunters, hooligans and other scum attack their own team, or any team for that matter.

Many countries have done ok in footballing.
Not many countries have won the world cup over the last 80 years.
Brasil, Argentina, Italy, Germany, England and France (ok ok there was also Uruguay). Its quite an exclusive club.

What you said is simply not true. You have quite a romantic view on football, like the americans that are pretty new to this kind of competition.
Seasoned countries have a different view. We play to win, playing a nice football can be funny but without the will to win you go nowhere.
The Dutch team knows something about this.

You must not see what the English premier league is like, or other heavy weight tournaments are like to be surprised how Fans treat their idols. In victory and defeat, moreso if defeat is pretty umiliating for such a talented team as the English one is.

So I wonder at what point the no-ko tv station dropped the match and switched to cartoons or KJI speeches.:haha:

The next no-ko match, the no-ko team will actually be from a Chinese temp agency. The actual team was never seen again.

You! stop raughing at me.

ROFLMAO :rotfl2:

No live broadcast, German TV said. NK TV broadcasts it only with 24 hours of delay.

At least they planned so. If they stick to the plan now remains something else.

24 hours should give them long enough to doctor the tape making the scoreline 7-7 or 8-7 to NK :O:

Deco is a very good player (but we still have miguel and simão) but for my sadness we lost all so a great player (before the game with Ivory Coast)...my fovorite from Portuguish Team...Nani!

As for Rooney he will only start to perform when he is given the service he needs. Ie when England revert to real world tactics and start playing the ball to feet along the floor using the midfield players. Instead to killing all are hope's by playing long ball football from the dark ages.
Also Benching Fat Frank and Heskey and replacing them with Joe Cole and Defoe would help alot.

Hey, jimbuna. Why are you so pessimistic about England's future in this World Cup?

Skybird
06-23-10, 04:20 AM
Germany has great luck with the referees this tournament. First the card juggler from last match, tonight a guy from Brazil known to be extremely pedantic, having a long record of misjudgements that a Brasilian club even collected on DVd and sent to FIFA in protest for his nomination, and in his home country Brazil the man is banned from sports for having manipulated matches. I fear that here comes another referee who will put some decisive influence into the match's result, and even the next match as well - five German player in the starting rooster will play against Ghana with one yellow from the match against Serbia already on their account.

German news says the nomination of this guy caused "blankes Entsetzen" (pure horror) in the DFB. German teams have also earlier experiences with him, he supervised the match versus Sweden in 2006, and was heavily attacked afterwards for unjustified yellow-reds versus a Swedish player.

Neither FIFA and its new rules nor FIFA's selection of some of the referees are convincing. It rather shows that you can call yourself a football association without necessarily needing to understand much of football, and favouring bureaucratic skills and an overly arrogant attitude over sports and competence.

It's like always in life: the bigger the institution, the more vulnerable it become to corruption, the more opportunity it shows for hiding incompetence, the more reward there is given to rogues having no skills or even do bad - but showing loyalty to the organisation itself. I thought last tournament the referees were bad, but this time they the general performance level (with individual exceptions of course) has gone from bad to worse. And in parts FIFA has to accept responsibility for that.

I'd like to say that many were most certainly happy to know that France was going to play in this world cup. But many others (most ?) didn't get to know HOW we managed to qualify against Ireland since Henry himself admitted that he had intentionally handled the ball to set up another player's decisive goal against Ireland.

To me (and many others I guess), there was no honour nor merit for us in playing in this world cup. Period.

A minutes silence will take place today to celebrate the lives of the North Korean football team.

I asked Fabio Capello if he thought England would go 4-4-2 today. He said "No, I think they will go 7-4-7, it's bigger and offers more leg room."

Hello, Alex. Well, i don't really know how to answer your question. All i know is that football teams have their ups and downs, especially football teams. When a football team doesn't perform well for a certain period people start looking for someone to put the blame on. What's the point? I mean, someone is responsible for sure but why be angry? The national football team of France is not France... Like every other national football team they are a bunch of millionaires (we agree on that) who claim that they represent their country. If this was true they would happily do it for free. We endorse this idea, we applaud them when they win and we ask for our money back when they lose. It's quite silly. So you either cut loose and stay away from the whole thing or you enjoy yourself without paying too much attention.;)

So i guess i'll have to revise my previous post and say "don't start ranting" instead of "stand up for your team".;)

Very good defending by Ghana, which helped to make Germany showing the weakest performance of it's three matches so far. Not a disaster, but a weak performance indeed.

England vs Germany then - can't get any more classic than this (well, maybe it can - if England fights like crazy and then looses in penalty shootings :har: )

What are the chzances? England started poor, but their shape seems to show a trend towards slowly improving. Germany started like a blitz, then again did well - though not that well - against Serbia, but performed poor against Ghana, so their trend is somewhat opposite to that of England: slowly dropping. Question is what will happen in both teams until Sunday.

I tend to think chances are 53:47 for England currently. The great unknown in the formula is this typical German football virtue of tournament mentality - will it again compensate for German deficits and strengthen German fighting spirit and team spirit - or this time not? On paper, England has more of "better" players of greater international reputation.

P.S. Great relief about the referee!

Well, they would not have been allowed to fly Messerschmidts in the battle for England, right? As a matter of fact, for example the Poles flew Hurricanes for England, not Germany! :DL Although thwre were foreigners from allied nations fighting in the Axis armies, this was not a rule to a degree that one could say the Wehrmacht or the Luftwaffe were multicultural organisations.

The German scorer of today's match, btw, is one of the players who refuses to sing the german anthem even if the coach wuld demand it (which he wisely does not), pointing to his religious feelings and his Turkish identity. Not that singing the anthem is a big issue for me, many players simply don't do it - but most of these don't do it by habit or because they are too shy to sing loud :). But deliberately refusing to sing it over sentiments for another nation and culture, is something alienating for a national team player, imo. I mean a national team is not like just any internationally composed club team.

But back to football now. :)

A team, if it wants to win, must play for 90 minutes, not only 20 in the second half like we did against Slovakia yesterday. Add to that lack of ideas, lack of chesion as a group, a sense of superiority (one does not win matches just because has been world champion 4 years before) and lack of clear objectives and possibilities in how exactly to organize the team entrusted to his care in the head of the trainer, the result can only be one: Italy goes home with 2 points, worse than we did in 66 and 74.

Will support Argentina from now on in this world cup.

So now we will have the epic football-battle „ Deutschland : England“ on Sunday.
What do we do with that?

Imo, from a German viewpoint, at this stage it is probably easier to play England instead the US.

The US boys have already proven themselves and they have nothing to lose. No angry mob is awaiting them at home, if they fail to qualify for the quarter-finals and get sent back home. They are devil-may-care which makes them a dangerous team, not concerned with the burden of football-related enmities and great expectations from its supporters.

Now, if you look at the English team, with the players they can field, one would expect them to win against the German farm team. But unlike coach Capello wants everyone to make believe I fail to see that the English players’ have already “freed their minds” by winning against Slovenia. At least, that is what I am hoping for :-) .

But of course, if they win against the arch rival Germany, I am sure that this would give them the boost necessary to make it to the world cup final.

I’d say, if the German team can avoid an early goal by the English team or even better, take the lead; there are good chances to win the match.

That was fun to watch. I like to see an African team continuing, however I hoped the US would win. Football is on the rise in the US, ABC broadcasted live it was said on German TV, and sems to cover the championship several hours per day. And although the American system for youth work is so very different from that in europe and south america (sports is only a means to secure access to college/university), and specialisation starts so late that when talents reach that age of around 22 years most talented players already have left for clubs in overseas, the US is showing a constant climb to the upper ranks of international football since quite some time now. They even became 2nd in the Confed Cup, losing only to Brazil. In two or three world championships they could very well advance amongst the final 4, maybe. but in 8 or 12 years, that will be a new generation of players then. Much depends on the progress made not being lost during the transition.

I also see them comparing to German teams regarding one quality, and that is that they compensate individual technical deficits of their players by team spirit and fighting spirit. That is a bonus during tournaments.

US team fought with all it was capable of, until the end. The team could return home with heads held up. And that is more than Italy and France can do.

for the audience in South Africa it is great that one African team still is playing. and who knows: Uruguay is the slightly better team, but they are not invincible and are not beyond reach of Ghana's abilities.

Yeah, what goes around I guess Sky. Germany is playing very well but like us, the defence is a bit lacking. Now, if we can just stop the English fans from lynching the linesman during half time then it should be a good second half, strong movements by both sides but once you're through the center then there's not a lot to punch through until its too late.
Still, looking good, still a lot to play for and hope that we can push forwards now our guys have woken up. Let's hope we don't fall asleep again because of the bad linesman call. Put that anger into your play guys, push forward, play your positions properly.

Good luck, both sides. :salute:

The English scrambled into second half like they ended the first one. They owned the second half and never left the German side of the pitch - until the German Doppelblitz struck and broke their morale.

Two historic statistics. It is the highest score Germany has ever scored against England at world championships, and since 1954 Germany has laways made it amongst the last 8 teams.

The 3-goal difference has one good thing, that is that it takes away some of the tension about the second Engöish goal that was not given. Even if it would have been given by the referee, that doe snot automatically mean that afterwards the English would have marched through to victory.

All in all I think our team has won deserved. It was a win of good team spirit and team cohesion. even the weakness in defence was compensated by that. And different to earlier tournaments, the Germans finally, finally have learned to shoot goals.

Argentine vs Mexico this evening. Could become exciting, the Mexicans are agile and hungry. However, I expect the Argentinians to win. Hmn. Beside Italy, Argentine is one of the two classic German Angstgegner.

Okay, so what's the bet here? If England wins, Skybird has to eat a pound of black pudding and sing "Hail Britannia?"

and if the Huns win...

Buna dresses in Lederhosen and sings "Des Samma Mia"

Well, I'm waiting! :D

At least we didn't have to go through extra time and penalties! If that goal had been given we would've just sat back and not bothered further. Well done Germany!

Also, the German goalie Neuer player really well, made a couple of great saves. Clear win for the Germans in the end.

I think the Germans wanted the victory more than the English. Or not?:hmmm:

Well, the rest of the UK can safely watch BBC1 and ITV1 without having to put up with all the hype and constant references to 1966!:03:

The gutter press have a very bad habit of building up a team or sports person to a un-achievable pinnacle, then tearing them to pieces when they fail.

It won't take much imagination to think what "The Sun" will have on it's front and rear pages tomorrow - and the next 10 or so pages as well!!!!

I bet they'll move on to Murray at Wimbledon next.

Germany played far better and deserved their win despite the errors from the officials regarding the second English goal.

Now let's see what Argentina will do tonight

Wow that's a strong prediction :O:

In fairness I also think Argentina will win but I can't really predict the scoreline. The force must be strong with you :03::O:

Good point Jim and Sky. I mean, if we had have gone 2-1 then it would have been carnage both on and off the pitch because of that goal.
I think Germany were trying for the 5-1 of '66 in the last minutes... :haha:

Almost halftime. Second very brutal misjudgement of the day: the 1:0 for Argentinia was offsides, and very clearly so. It seems to me this misjudgement has had an even greater psychological effect on the disadvantaged team, Mexico, than the missed 2:2 had for England.

Looks like Germany vs Argentinia. Not the best of memories for Germany. But who wants to become children must be capable to beat EVERY opponent.

how long before FIFA will FINALLY show the decent professionalism to include what already is well-proven standard in other team sports like hockey: the video evidence, or chipped balls? All excuses I ever heared for not going on that path were foul excuses by old men trying to prevent any change to those precious memories of theirs. To willingly invite and not prevent misjudgements of this game-deciding callibre is nothing but betrayal of the one team, and rude unfairness and lacking sportsmanship. to my knowledge hockey or american football have not suffered in excitement or legend-building just because they have the video-evidence.

Because unlike Test Cricket where all the 'powerful' nations backed a policy for its introduction, you only hear an outcry from the footballing nation who suffer a detriment as a result of the lack of such equipment and only for a short period thereafter.

What is needed is a consistent campaign on introducing it on a trial period for a major tournament to see how well it performs.

There was a vote recently where all the governing football bodies were given a free vote on whether to introduce it or not and suprisingly (on the home front) it was only the Irish who voted against.

A bit suprising when you consider what happened to their neighbours across the border in the recent qualifier with France

Most governing bodies are dinosaurs who are reluctant to give up the power they have to technology....just look at the biaised fool who heads FIFA for starters.
