In SH4 UBM German, 1940, I disabled a freighter with HE deck gun round.

Here's my query..I fired another next 150 rounds fired into her, from broadside, bow on, stern on, right next to the target 50 yards away etc., (and the graphics looked great) but the freighter refused to sink.

Also, I couldn't change the rounds from HE to AP for some reason.

So..is there a sweet spot in the damage model that needs to be hit to sink a freighter with HE rounds?

Are all rounds available to deck gun crew, if shown on the screen(although I could not highlight it)?

And lastly, while another issue completely, is topedo firing and auto solution different on the U-Boat models then on the Fleet boats.

It seems that it is easier for me to "seat of the pants", using the maps, hit a target in the US careers then in the German one.

I am still new to SH and will unfortunately be asking noobie questions from time to time :damn:

I don't know what, if any mods you're using, but I find that aiming for the waterline speeds up the target's flooding, but if you like explosions and fire, aim for the smokestack and engine room (usually under the smokestack a.k.a. funnel) and any cargo on it's deck.

Admiral - That's what I was doing for 150 rounds, but the freighter target never lost an inch of waterline. It was smoking and on fire etc. but never went down or under or anything. I thought perhaps HE rounds aren't the answer but as I posted, no other rounds were availabe to highlight and use.

It was really frustrating. Anyway just want to know if there was anything that I wasn't doing, or if this is a "bug" in the UBM addon or something historically reflective of 1940 submarine warfare.

CP Troyce, It sounds like a bug with whatever mods you may have.:hmmm:

Even a 3 incher should sink a ship long before 150 rounds!:yep:

Sounds like a bug. HE shells work best for merchants. Even with TMO that makes merchants much harder to sink with the DG, 30 good shots take out most.

Were you actually doing the shooting and knowing every shell hit..

Armistead - Yes I shot each shell...also btw, it finally went under. I came back to it after a day, reloaded the mission, and it was slowly taking water on deck.

I am using SH4 UBM, modded OM; so nothing unique or strange.
