14 Apr 1942. U-85 (http://www.subsim.com/boats/u85.htm) was the first U-boat to be sunk off the North American coast after the start of the Operation Drumbeat (http://www.subsim.com/ops/drumbeat.htm) (Paukenschlag) on January 13, 1942.

On the day that she was sunk, 14 April, U-85 (http://www.subsim.com/boats/u85.htm) stayed on the surface through the engagement. After repeated hits on the boat, fatally damaging her, the order to abandon ship was given and maybe half of the crew got into the water and then U-85 (http://www.subsim.com/boats/u85.htm) started to sink again fast. USS Roper then dropped 11 depth charges onto the already sinking U-boat and its 2 dozen survivors and in the process killed everyone in the water.

Wow, it looks like U-853 was sunk just 2 days before the end of the war! I had no idea German u-boats operated off the US coast so late in the war.

commercial diver ?

My dream, as a diver , is to dive on a U-Boot... we have quite a few in our shore waters but they're all WWI's, then there are a couple off Brittany.
