I'm having a very dull time trying to find these specific AMC ships to progress the mission. I've been bounced between two patrol points as my time expires in each area (not sure if this will repeat until 5 AMC ships sunk) and never seem to encounter many merchants that are classed as AMC.

Do these damned ship types show as Merchant contacts on the main map or do they indeed show as Warships? I know these suckers transit between Lock Ewe and Iceland but suspect there aren't that many around.

I'm also unsure if I should be staying within patrol point range (250 km I believe for Atlantic patrols)? Do you veterans bother doing this? Should I ignore the patrol point map marker and just sit outside Lock Ewe?

Hmmm the patrol seems to have just completed after a couple of times relocating but I never noticed. This raises another question about the SH5 UI design. Is there any way to have mission completion, radio contacts and any other incomming messages provide both a visual AND audible alert as well as a drop to TC (time compression) 1? It's annoying to be in TC modes higher than 1 and missing such alerts.

As for getting these damned AMC ships sunk, I'm wondering if I should draw a 40 km radius near the tip of the Isle of Lewis and sit in that spot hoping to catch any visual or hydrophone AMC contacts as they round the tip of the coast?

What tips do you other Captains have for this particular mission?

There's dozens of posts dealing with finding those ships. Just search for "AMC", or "Total Germany" or "5 ships" or "Loch Ewe". Remember, patrol zones aren't tied to missions at all. The patrol zones you're sent to are random, they aren't where those ships will be.

There's no TC variable for mission completion, so you can't really set it to drop to 1x TC. There is for Radio Messages, which should be 1x TC and you get those when your patrol is reassigned.
