Any fixes or mods that work with ATI video cards to make SHIII Hi-res on a wide screen?

Nobody knows of one or has any suggestions? :(

If you haven't already, check the SH3 Mods Workshop forum. There are a couple of current discussions regarding modding the game to run in a widescreen format. Whether what's there will suit your HW or screen res, I don't know, but that seems to be where all the available info is ATM.

Hey OverKill, Im sorry it took me a while to respond to your post, but I've been busy.
Here is what I did in order to play SH3 + GWX in a 1920x1200 Res in Win7 64bit with two 4870x2 CrossFired.
* Install SH3
* Install GWX Mod
* Install the res mod found here:
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=1092
You basically copy the files and edit the .cfg file with the resolution that you want the game to run on. I dumped the files into the general game folder.
To play the game full screen and above 1020 Res:
Win 7 and GWX do not mix well. You will get a 3d error if you try to run the game above 1020x780, but this is how you by-pass that.
* Set your Res to 1020x780
* Start the game with the Gray Wolfs game shortcut.
* Either hit the Windows key or Alt+Esc to get back to the desktop.
* Change the res to what you setup in the .cfg file.
* Click the program Icon on your task-bar and go back to the game.
Enjoy the game at your new res.
That I know off, you can not start the game at anything above 1020x780 full screen. The game will crash every time. Because of this, we change the res to 1020 and then change the res back to what we want to play.
If you have any other questions, please dont be shy and ask. Im by no means an expert on this matter, but I can at least tell you what has worked for me.

This is not the case for everyone, I just got a 1680x1050 monitor and I edited the Res_Fix cfg file to run the game fullscreen (with GWX) at that res, which it did with no problem except for things being stretched out too much horizontally IMO because of the game's native 4:3 aspect ratio. (Really the only thing that bothered me a lot was the slideout compass being squished into too much of an oval shape for my tastes - nothing else was all that noticeable.)
Prior to that I was playing on a 4:3 monitor at 1280x960 res, always at fullscreen, and never had to start the game at a lower res and then alt+tab out and change the cfg to get it to work.
Currently I've gone back to a 4:3 aspect ratio for the game and am running at 1400x1050, with an ATI card and the scaling set so it doesn't stretch things out to fill the entire screen. So I have vertical black bars on either side, but I prefer that to the squished compass. I'll probably stick with that until I can figure out a way to "fix" the compass so it's not squished at the WS res, or somebody releases a WS mod that I like and can get to work on my system.

Wow, every time I tried to run it at 1920*1200 it would crash. I tried it in both Vista 64bit and Win 7 64bit. Even after the Res Mod, it would crash. I found out if I did start the game in its native rez, as stated above, I would have no problems.
If you find a solution to your little problem, let me know so I can try to implement it on my rig.

I'm on XP so maybe that's the difference? I've always used the ResFix mod because my old monitor would pop up a notice about any fullscreen app that ran at lower than 1280x960, saying I should run it at the higher res for optimum viewing, well yeah, no kidding! :O: Only for a few seconds when it first loaded but still a PITA. I was so happy to be able to avoid that with SH3 and I've never had any res I set in the ResFix cfg cause me any problems. I just set it and it works.
I played around with the WS mod that's been released in the other forum but it's optimized for... 1360x768? Anyway, not for 1680x1050, and nothing I tried so far would make it run right for me. And really I'd be perfectly happy just to run the game as is at 1680x1050 if I could get the compass unsquished at that res.
Maybe it would just be a matter of finding the right .tga files and squishing them enough in the other direction so they'd revert to something like a proper circle when stretched out in-game. I dunno. As it is I still have a higher res at 1400x1050 than I did on the old monitor.

For the rez fix, does taking screenshots (with Print Screen) make the game freeze for anyone else?

:yep:
Sometimes the game freezes and sometimes it gives a CTD. That is the case for me. I just stopped taking screenshots.:wah:

That seems to be a common problem with the fix but I've never encountered it. Just lucky I guess. Altho I haven't tried PrintScreen yet with the new setup so who knows?
Try to take a screenshot while running the navigation training exercise, for example.:ping:

I took screenshots during the academy exams when I first did them, never had a problem.
With the new monitor I've changed the res and disabled auto rescaling to WS format so I'll have to see if that makes a difference.

I really don't know, frau. If you continue having no problems then enjoy it 'cause you will be one of the few who are able to take screenies with the fix enabled.;)

I will guess that you are typing in the new rez into the .cfg file and then saving them into your game folder. Try a new re-install of the whole game. If you have a career that you dont want to lose, save it from your My Documents\SH3 folder. After that, delete both the game folder AND the SH3 folder found under My Documents.
Re-install the game, re-install GWX and then run the rez mod.

It's been a while, but I seem to remember that a DOS window opened for a brief instant.
Do you have all five files for the Res Fix in your game folder?
d3d9.cfg
d3d9.dll
SHIII.sdb
SP2 Rez fix uninstall.bat
SP2 Rez fix.bat
IIRC the Readme that came with the version I have only said to copy the last three files into your game folder, but I think it's assuming you already have the first two there. The instructions on the Subsim Downloads page were more clear.

I dont have the d3d9 files i have to put them in the game folder.
I tried to reinstall everything but still the same problem.
Windows says that the program must be closed and i cant load the game (with the 5 res files in the game folder)
Maybe a stupid question...how can you be sure of the resolution you are playing in the game? TY

K lets start from the top.
*DL the file zip.
*Unzip or unpack them into a place where you can find them later.
*Edit the .cfg file and change the rez to what you need.
++If you want to take scree nshots, make sure you change the patch where the screen shots will be saved. You can do this in the same file where you edited the rez.
After the .cfg file has been edited, add all the fires form the zip into your game folder.
*Run the .bat file. A DOS Promp window will pop up for like .75 seconds.
*Change your Desktops resolution to 1020*728 (or the game default) and start the game.
*Go back to the desktop and now change your rez to what ever your edited into the .cfg file.
*Enjoy SH3 in full screen rez.

Took over half a dozen during this evening's session.
I wonder if anyone's ever tried to figure out if there's a common denominator among those who have problems or those who don't? That mod worked "right out of the box" for me with no issues, but I know quite few people can't get screenshots to work at all. It's a shame too, once you get the game running in a nice high res, not to be able to capture any stills from it.

Thanks for the help. I tried the procedure above but no luck.
If i delete the d3d9 files i can run the game but no res fix.....
I can run the game fullscreen but when i took the screenshot it's in the 1024 x 768 format...
i guess its the same res i have in the game right?
By the way im using the original 2006 copy of the game.....

I have the same problem with the resolution of SH3 and the highress-fix..(ATI 5700)
Make follow things...
Before you start SH3, delete and reinstall your Graphicdriver (by me CCC 10.4) and start then SH3, wheres patched to high ress..
Then it works..
