Well, since the untimely death of my last commander, my new guy Wolfgang Dahm has completed the "shakedown" cruse, and later (after real life interruptions, like garbage, dishes, making sure I have something to wear to church tomorrow, ect ect) Dahn will be going on his first "war" patrol, and due to the beauty of GTX, will be on station when the war begins. Now, the question is, should I go to to England to wait for late traffic from England, (or do something crazy like be in a English port when the war starts and shoot my way out :yeah:) or should I head to poland and snipe off there freighters returning home? Is there enough polish traffic to make it worthwhile?
(Now I am giggling about being in Scapa, 10 meters under water, with the hood docked at 1500 meters away, waiting for the "war has begun message... :har:)
and even though I have yet to get a guy to make it to 1941, bumping it up to 43 percent realism.... :arrgh!:
I don't know about Polish traffic. I've been to Dover before the war started. There is a cruiser there waiting to be womped.

I just spent a week disrupting shipping traffic over there. Got around 20k with 2 torpedoes and afew 88mm rounds. It didn't seem that busy but I may have missed a lane.

Not a great deal of sport at Poland....England is your best bet, there are a few carrier task groups headed for Scapa and Loch Ewe (as well as the Hood) from the north west in the early months.

Thanks, I've been looking for new areas of operation. I tend to stick to the north atlantic but this time I wan't to try something new. I tried Poland and it was productive, I wonder about the English channel. I am looking forward to attacking Norway.

STAY OUT OF THE CHANNEL!!
I think someone at BdU hates me -- my last SH3Gen orders (early '41) were to go "check out Calais" and sink any enemy ships there... :o

:hmmm:
Shouldn't Calais have been in German hands by then?

True. From 26 May 1940.

I have gone down the channel on the first day or two of the war catching stuff heading home, but otherwise, STAY OUT OF THE CHANNEL!

Indeed, it was. So instead of actually sailing there, I decided to let my radio operator call ahead and ask the harbormaster there if there were any enemy ships in the harbor. He said, "aucun", so I decided I could check that off my "to do" list. :)

:yeah:
I hope you sent a message back to BdU letting them know that, according to the German harbormaster of the German-occupied port of Calais, there were in fact no enemy ships roaming at will in the German-held harbor.
I mean, just so they know. For future reference. :O:

I wouln't be approaching Calais at any time in 41 regardless of orders.....the area is a honeycomb of mines :o
I've gone through the channel a couple times in the early war... It's not THAT bad. If you know what you're doing you can gun down lone merchants and avoid contact with the Royal Navy fairly easily. Submerge/avoid contact in the day, strike at night and you should be safe. Tommy is still pretty dumb at this point and shouldn't catch you. The torpedo boat patrols are really annoying though, expect to dive a lot to avoid these guys calling in their bigger brothers on your position.

As someone who is me, what is SH3GEN? A mission maker? Compatible with GWX3.0?

STAY OUT OF THE CHANNEL!!
The British say: :ping:
on first patrol with new man - Siegfried Gorski. told to go to BF19 late Aug.
rather than do shake down and take second cruise in war time, I decided to run through channel, patrol BF19 as instructed then wait on station for war to be declared.
Beautiful weather running through channel - falling over ships. BF19 as usual quiet. Made for ST George's channel towards Bristol - dozens of ships.
Radio signal - go get 'em tiger! ----- not a ship - in complete run up to Scotland - saw 3 ships, one was a 98t fishing boat the others where neutrals. Rotten weather all the way!
How am I to get an Iron Cross with this sort of luck?
sorry, forgot to mention GW3

You get the Iron Cross for valorus acts! Valorus acts like my sinking of a schooner with a 10.5 cm deck gun! BDU didn't see fit to award my for this most dangerous and profitable deed, mindless buricrats that they are. I'll have to jazz up the report next time, may be give the schooner some big eight inch guns and a crew of blood thisrty zombie pirates. That is sure to give me a medal.
For the longest time I have been convinsed that there aren't any Polish ships in the whole of the world. I haven't ever seen one. I think they are a myth jinnd up by the 7th/13th flotilla to justify their budget and make themselves feel important early in the war.
