Just got a new, non-sub sim game today. Well, new to me, anyway. :D

It's B-17 Flying Fortress, The Mighty 8th. I've been wanting this forever and, thanks to some help from Frumpkis, I got it from Sold Out Software on Amazon.

Whilst installing it, it plays a little 'trailer' of sort. Pretty cool, actually. But one of the scenes shows the mission briefing room, and the list of upcoming missions. It sort of startled me (although, in retrospect, it shouldn't have!) when I spotted several quite familiar names amongst the future targets:

Lorient

St. Nazaire

Brest

Wilhelmshaven

Sure gonna feel weird being on the other side for a change! :D

You can't go wrong with a classic. I used to play a lot of European Air War. As a German you did some bombing of Channel shipping, and saw places like Plymouth, Dover and Lands End from the air. Also some French ports and cities.

You come for my sub pen and I'll shoot you down. I have a 105mm deck gun and you'll pay dearly for attacking my base. :arrgh!:

That is a classic game. Over on the WWIIOL forums awhile back, the a guy playing it let us players name a bunch of the bombers and he would write AARs of each crews missions. I think 'my bomber' was named '****e-****er' and it had a women riding a fw-190 as its symbol! lol! it got shot down on its 12th or so mission. Hope you have fun with that game!

There are still a few of us around there who might be able to answer your questions.

B-17 the mighty eighth was a great one.

I REALLY wish they would re-develop something similar to it with great graphics, a high level of immersion and in depth historical accuracy. :yeah:

I do believe I have that collecting dust in the attic (with so many other past favourites).

But if I'm not mistaken my copy is the Commodore Amiga version :hmmm:

No problem. Honest. Just stand on your watch tower and wave a pretty flag and I'll make sure to, ahhh . . . 'miss you'. :D

Thanks for the tip! :)

I'll admit the graphics aren't 'great' but, from what I can see so far, I don't care at all. For an almost ten-year-old game, it's impressively detailed. I'm just playing around with it at the moment, having dusted off my Saitek X52 joystick/throttle, and I was sitting in the cockpit of the B-17. Holey shamoley! Four individual throttles and fuel/air settings, four individual propeller pitch controls, etc. etc.etc, and all of 'em are clickable and manually adjustable! Whoosh!

Alas, the game didn't come with either the printed manual or reference cards, so I'll be printing those Monday at work. But I foresee me starting to split my time between SHIII/GWX Gold and B-17.

(As an aside, this is sorta my beef with Ubi: B-17 Flying Fortress, The Mighty 8th is definitely not top-line graphics. But the detail, and immersiveness, etc., does seem top notch. I wish Ubi would understand, if they're gonna produce a U-boat simulation, that while amazing graphics make it beautiful to behold, detailed immersion make it fantastic to play.)

Now, why don't I believe you? :D

I had that game a long time ago; I didn't stick with it too awfully long. I was utterly garbage at it, and could never really get the hang of convincing an early Saitek X45 to cooperate with it. I think Il-2 displaced it eventually, but I don't remember.

Come to think of it, I believe I might have been sent against sub pens m'self. I vaguely remember asking, "Why bother?"

b-17 the mighty eight was made in early 200s right?

Kewl! Although I suspect I'll be quite a while just acquainting myself with the controls and commands before I'll have the leisure to explore for those! :O:

This is not a very good picture of it,

This plaque honors the military consultant Major Joseph Worsley US Army Airforce retired, who was a bombardier in WWII, and last I heard, is still alive and kicking. Yes there is a UFO and Aliens in it too

Well, so far I haven't gone to Lorient. Brest, however . . . :D

It really was a lovely day to fly. Crisp and cold for December 1943 (and even crisper and colder at 14,900 feet!)

http://i830.photobucket.com/albums/zz225/schlechter_pfennig/B-17/onourway.jpg

Things got even chillier once we opened the bomb bay doors. What a draft!

http://i830.photobucket.com/albums/zz225/schlechter_pfennig/B-17/onthebombrun.jpg

Brest spared no expense making us feel welcome on the bomb run. What fireworks!

http://i830.photobucket.com/albums/zz225/schlechter_pfennig/B-17/bombsaway.jpg

We had a few 'fireworks' of our own to deliver: two 1,500 and two 1,000 pound armour piercing bombs. Somehow I don't think even the armoured sub pens liked those.

http://i830.photobucket.com/albums/zz225/schlechter_pfennig/B-17/gotcha.jpg

Hope you can shoot better than the AA batteries at Brest! :D:O:

(Somehow I have a feeling the next air raid I experience leaving port is going to feel wayyyy different to me now!)

I just d\led the demo and played with it a bit and Yes to your question.

Didn't this get rereleased as a console game or something ?

You can, if you choose, take off and land, yes. There are 10 crew positions, and you can manually take over any of their stations at any time (as long as they aren't injured, and the station is manned). Both the pilot and copilot positions, under full manual control, can get a bit daunting, though. For instance, just starting an engine (and you have four of them that have to be started, one at a time and in sequence) is around a 15-step process.

You can also fly the fighter escorts (if there are any assigned to your mission as escorts) as well as fly any of the German aircraft that are tasked to attack your formation.

Plus, if you play on the squadron commander level, you can pop in and out of every bomber assigned to you.

edit: Having played SHIII I've come to understand to a much greater degree the bravery of the men who commanded and crewed the U-boats. And now, having played a heavy bomber, I've come to that same understanding after having flown just a few times through the flak storms thrown up at me.

OK.
Ya sucked me in and I ordered B17 today.
It better be good or I hit this button that sends a signal on the
'Net!

That signal will disable all GWX 3 installs, mess up your Microwaves,
nuter your pets, (and maybe you!),
Turn your car into a Yugo and more!

Yep - you sucked me in too.

Pity it doesn't do multiplayer - we could have a Subsim formation over Germany lol
